GFA won't give me Black Stars job- Bashiru Hayford

The Ashgold boss is the odds on favourite if a local candidate is named

In a no holds barred interview with SWAG President Kwabena Yeboah on Kumasi-based Angel FM, the outspoken coach, who helped the Obuasi-based club end their 19-year league title drought two seasons ago, emphasized his belief that it is highly unlikely he will get the honour if he tries for it.

"I won't get it. I won't get it. I won't get," he stressed.

"Do you know I've already tried three times? I mean I know I have to encourage myself but I just won't get it."

He was however quick to express his belief that he would succeed in the unlikely event of being given the opportunity to serve.

"If I ever got it, though, I would very much do the job. All these players playing for the Black Stars I know them; many of them passed through my hands.

"Asamoah Gyan for instance was in my Academicals team that beat Nigeria some time back, before Liberty recruited him to play for their Junior Team. The only ones who I may not have coached before would be the likes of Dede Ayew..."

He disagreed with the popular belief that indigenous coaches lack the pedigree to manage the egos of Ghana's superstar footballers.

"They say when it's a black coach they (the players) won't respect you, but let me tell you; I can do it. I can handle the national team with ease.

"It's just a matter of bringing the boys together and psyching them; it's not the place to be teaching basics like heading and shooting. It's just about organizing and polishing."

"But I just won't get it."

Bashiru Hayford first won the Ghana Premier League with Asante Kotoko in 2008.

The Ghana coaching post became vacant when Israeli Avram Grant resigned following a failure to win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title in Gabon.
