In a new Instagram video, dermatologist and TLC host Dr. Sandra Lee, MD also known as Dr. Pimple Popper removes an incredibly large blackhead from a patients back. After extracting the actual black portion of the blockage from the patients clogged pore, Dr. Lee then pushes a sizable amount of white-colored sebum from the site.
It keeps coming, the famed dermatologist exclaims several times in the video, while pushing the sebum out with a comedone extractor .
Blackheads , or open comedones, are actually clogged pores that are filled with dead skin cells and oil, not dirt or grime as myth may suggest. Blackheads can only occur where both a hair follicle and sizable pore is present, making the back a possible location for the skin concern, as with this patient. The blackish portion of a blackhead is due to the oxidation of the dead skin cells and oil when exposed to air. The white substance seen in this extraction, however, is actually made of the same mixture of dead skin and oil as the black-hued portion of the blackheadthe contents are simply unoxidized in its white state.
Even when a skin concern isnt visible to the patient, like a blackhead on the back, it can still cause distress and discomfort. And this patient is certainly grateful to have Dr. Lees skillful hand extracting his big, bothersome blackhead.
Im feeling better already, the patient says at the end of the video.
Dr. Lee happily replies, You do? I like that.
Season 3 of Dr. Pimple Popper will return to TLC later this year.
