Pulse: What is your favourite music?

RL: I like R&amp;B and Hiphop… Justin Timberlake and Usher.

Pulse: Do you have any pre-match rituals or superstitions?

RL: Hmm... I don’t know if it’s a ritual but every game I put on the left boot [first] and then the right boot. I’ve been doing this for years and now I don’t even think about it.

Pulse: Who is the best African player that you have played with?

RL: [Laughs] Now I’m playing with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting; he is a great guy who is an important part of the dressing room. [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang as well - you know how good a striker he is, I don’t have to say. He was also a very fun and positive person.

Pulse: Who is the best African player that you have played against?

RL: Over the last few years, [Sadio] Mané for sure. [Riyad] Mahrez as well. Before that, I played against [Samuel] Eto’o when I was very young. Yaya Touré, when he was playing for Manchester City as well.

Pulse: Which African country do you think can one day win the World Cup?

RL: Haha, that’s too hard to say!

Pulse: What do you do when you are not playing football?

RL: I travel a lot, because we are playing every two days. Everyday that I am off I try to spend time with my family and friends.

I have two daughters and it's important for them to be with their father as much as possible, and for me to spend my time with my wife and kids.

Pulse: Do you know what you will do when you have finished playing football?

RL: I started to prepare for life after football when I was 27 years old, so I have lots of options. Right now I cannot choose because I don't know what my heart will tell me in a few years.

Nigerian music superstar Wizkid continues his amazing run with a performance at Made in America as a guest artist of Justin Bieber to perform his hit single 'Essence'.

<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/wizkid-features-justin-bieber-on-essence-remix-with-made-in-lagos-deluxe-set-to-land/vsyb6s5">Wizkid and Bieber recently collaborated on the remix</a> of the record and the two performed it for the first time on stage at the Made in America music festival in Philadelphia.

'Essence' has been having an amazing run on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In July, Wizkid became the first Nigerian artist to have a record on the Billboard Hot 100 chart when 'Essence' broke into the chart at No. 82.

It rose to No.70 the next week and to No.67 the next.

In August, he cracked the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and also became the most Shazamed song in the United States for the week in review.

It's currently on No. 13 on Blllboard 100 and also<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/wizkids-essence-moves-to-no-1-on-the-randbhip-hop-airplay-chart/5gdtfp1"> No. 1 on the Billboard R&amp;B chart</a> which means Wizkid has a number one record in the United States of America.

In the whole of the 90s and early 2000s, Oba, a nine-village town in Anambra State, Nigeria, was a quiet settlement.&nbsp;

Just five minutes from&nbsp;Onitsha, the popular commerce and economic hub, Oba's main attraction back in the day was the Rojenny Games Village which houses a stadium and a recreational centre with a zoo. The Rojenny Stadium was the home of the defunct Jasper United and Udoji United and hosted Nigerian league games in the 90s.&nbsp;

Since the late 2000s, Oba has experienced a massive influx of settlers due in part to its strategic positioning.

Just five minutes away from Onitsha and about 10 minutes from Nnewi, via the Oba Roundabout axis, Oba has become an annex to the two business hubs of eastern Nigeria.

Most of the traders from the popular spare parts market in Onitsha called Ngbunka now reside in Oba. Same for a lot of the wealthy spare parts and electronic traders with businesses in Nnewi.

The city itself is also gradually transforming into an international market city with three international markets being constructed.

Oba is hugely connected to wealth, but never in its history has it dominated nationwide conversations as it has done in the past week.&nbsp;

Tales of the almost obscene and flamboyant display of wealth at the funeral of Obi Cubana's mother in the sleepy town, have dominated Nigerian internet and household gossip chatter in recent days.

Born Obi Iyiegbu, Obi Cubana is a known Nigerian businessman who has become an internet personality. After the launch of his first hotel in 2006, Obi in 2009 expanded his business portfolio with an investment in a South African franchise, Cubana.&nbsp;

With hotels and nightclubs in Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu and Owerri, Obi has firmly established himself as Nigeria's top hospitality entrepreneur.&nbsp;

He lost his mum Lady Uche Iyiegbu, who died in December 2020 at the age of 75. Seven months later, the show business and entertainment mogul pulled off the most extravagant funeral seen in the Nigerian internet era.&nbsp;

It was his boisterous mentee and former business associate, known as Cubana Chiefpriest on Instagram, that gave the funeral its <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/celebrities/cubana-high-priest-gifts-former-boss-obi-cubana-46-cows-for-mums-burial/jb6h5f6">first viral moment when he brought in a trailer load of 46 cows</a>.

A close friend of the show promoter revealed that he made the order from Katsina.

Another friend donated over 90 cows, and it was said that Obi received almost 400 cows from friends and well-wishers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to him, his decision to give his former boss 46 cows is was to represent his age.

That set the tone for what was to come in the eight-day funeral; Obi called it a carnival.&nbsp;

In the following days, Obi and his army of wealthy friends threw the events in Oba into the consciousness of Nigerians, excitedly sharing their display of opulence by the minute on social media, mainly Instagram.&nbsp;

From Obi's N50m pendant with his mum's photo to hordes of currency sprayed with wanton recklessness--it wasn't just the regular style of spraying single notes, they were throwing blocks of minted notes and several banks had bullion vans and security on standby to move cash to their branches.&nbsp;

Cases of Azul, a drink that costs more than N3m per bottle were shared in large quantities, guests arrived in long convoys of the most luxurious cars after private plane trips, the businessman and his peers stopped at nothing to put on a show.&nbsp;

"I'm sure a lot of money has left bank vaults in this part of the country for this funeral," an Operations Manager at a bank told Pulse that he sorted out some of his clients who attended the funeral in Oba, with millions of minted notes as far back as three months ago.&nbsp;

"We call these guys High Network Individuals (HNI) in banks; anything they want, we deliver to them. If they want mints for occasions like these, we can't say no."&nbsp;

Moneybags like Jowizaza, Ned Okonkwo, Henry Iyke, Justine Obiajunwa, Emeka Esomonu, Chima Desmond Anyaso, Nnamdi Chu Iyiegbu, Ugochukwu Harvey Igboanugo, Pretty Mike Of Lagos, Prophet Odumeje, Francis Nwaogwugwu, Quincy Okoh, Akin Alabi, Olakunle Churchill, Peter Obi, Escoba Smith, Andrea Williams of Betro Furniture, Emma Bishop Okonkwo, Shina Peller and so many others, took turns to visit Obi at his Villa in Oba and joined in the eager outpouring of wealth.&nbsp;

Celebrities also trooped in; BBNaija's Frodd was seen on Instagram spraying money, veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo gave us some funny moments on his Instagram page, he too joined in the act. Davido, Phyno, Patoranking, D'Banj and KCEE all performed in a concert in Oba on Saturday.

With no functional airport in Anambra State, guests flew private planes to Asaba and Owerri from where they rode in their convoys to Oba.&nbsp;

Oge, a staff at the Asaba International Airport, told Pulse that he counted about 41 private planes at the airport landing strip on Thursday, July 12.&nbsp;

"What I saw in Oba is something I have never seen before at an event. It was really amazing stuff," Raymond Iyieli, founder of Rayz TV, a society and celebrity platform who covered the event, said.&nbsp;

For the regular Oba residents, the extravagant funeral provided some opportunities.&nbsp;

Gerrard is an upcoming highlife musician from Oba but relocated to Enugu in 2016 in search of opportunities for his career.

He and his friends quickly formed a group of praise singers and spent the whole week in Oba welcoming guests with melodies from their gongs and drums.&nbsp;

"We are six in the group and every day for like three days, each of us made N400, 000," Gerrard told Pulse.&nbsp;

For context, there were almost a dozen of those groups at the venue and Gerrard and his crew didn't even have access to the entrance of the VIP area. Yet, they made that much money.

With the brazen display of wealth, the funeral of the septuagenarian which had the trappings of a festival, has gotten Nigerians talking.&nbsp;

Some have called it the 'Burial of the Year' while there have been debates about the most lavish funeral in Nigerian society settings.&nbsp;

During the debate, someone on Twitter mentioned the funeral of Madam Oyindamola Juliana Adenuga, the mother of Nigerian telecom mogul Mike Adenuga Jnr, the Chairman of Globacom.

Funsho Arogundade has covered celebrity and society in Nigeria for more than two decades and he saw in real-time the fanfare that event was in September 2005.&nbsp;

"It started in Lagos and then moved to&nbsp;Ijebu Igbo in Ogun State. It was quite a show that had the Lagos social establishment, captains of industries and several eminent Nigerians in attendance," Arogundade told Pulse.&nbsp;

"The reason why Cubana's event has been so loud is because of social media. If we had social media in 2005, we would still be talking about that event until this day.

"Just like you had a lot of musicians in Oba, it was like that in Ijebu Igbo too. The likes of King Sunny Ade and Wasiu Alabi Pasuma and so many others were performing every day."&nbsp;

"No matter the position it gets in the conversations about the most lavish funeral, Obi has raised the bar for people in that circle," Esther, an event planner in Lagos, told Pulse.&nbsp;

People close to Obi told Pulse that the event was made possible by his friends and business associates who wanted to show appreciation to him.&nbsp;

"He's very generous, and that's why these things are happening," a close associate of the wealthy businessman told Pulse.&nbsp;

"He sets people up to be rich themselves. People don't work for him for more than five years. He makes sure you become your own boss and gives you all the support you need. This is why people love him.

"He attends all important events of everyone who works for him, from weddings to burials.&nbsp;

"Just on Sunday, he promised to reward 300 Oba youths from 300 families with millions of Naira to start their respective businesses."&nbsp;

It was a big night for Nigerian contemporary music, which has come to be known as Afrobeats.

Since its recorded start in 1998, the genre has made a quantum leap from national dominance to nods from the most significant music institution.&nbsp;

"Whoever thought Afrobeats would take it this far?" Nigerian pop culture connoisseur&nbsp;Ayomide Tayo titled an episode of his newsletter Naija Times.&nbsp;

Burna Boy couldn't contain his joy after he won his award. A Grammy edition ago, he got sick after losing the <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/burna-boy-loses-out-in-the-world-music-category-of-the-grammy-awards-to-angelique/w5qm3kd">category to Beninese veteran singer</a> Angélique Kidjo, but this time it was a delight.&nbsp;

"Africa is in the house, this is a big win for my generations of Africans all over the world and this should be a lesson to every&nbsp;every African right there, no matter who you are, no matter what you plan to do you can achieve it, no matter where you are from, because you are a king . Look at me now, Grammy award winning Burna Boy," he said in his acceptance speech.&nbsp;

His Sunday night win is also a massive endorsement of his talent; although evident from his emergence, he didn't get wild-spread approval he craved earlier in his career.

It led to how he approached the music industry and his artistry—gusty and sometimes plain arrogance.&nbsp;

But it started paying off at some point. Burna garnered more commercial appeal from his third album 'Outside' released in 2018 and grabbed a Grammy nomination with this fourth African Giant released in 2019.&nbsp;

Drawing lessons from Kidjo, who beat him to the Grammy in 2020, Burna curated his next album 'Twice as Tall' to Grammy's taste.&nbsp;

From the theme of the album to features and rollout, it was clear what Burna wanted. He got it.&nbsp;

It wasn't the same with Wizkid. The equable singer never had to prove himself that hard; he was popularly heralded from his first single, 'Holla at Your Boy," released in January 2010.&nbsp;

His status as one of Afrobeats elite personalities got him a feature on <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/the-lion-king-the-gift-by-beyonce-album-review/v441rss">Beyonce's Lion King: The Gift album</a>, which featured other Nigerian artists. The single he featured on, Brown Skin Girl, won for Best Video.&nbsp;

Burna Boy and Wizkid are now primed to take Afrobeats further

Burna Boy and Wizkid wins position them as the stars for Afrobeats' next quest, global dominance.&nbsp;

"By 2016, it became clear that winning a Grammy for Wizkid and Burna Boy was an inevitability, not an "if"- because their music had become global in its outlook," music culture expert and author Jide Taiwo told Pulse.

"Where the predecessors (think 2face, Dbanj, Modenine, eLDee) had taken Nigerian music to the world, Wizzy and Burna have brought the world to Nigerian music.

"The Grammy Awards cemented that this year. It puts our music in good stead in the eyes of the world. It's broken down doors that the forerunners wedged open before now, allowing their gift to shine a light on the plethora of (budding) stars here."

From nation-wide stars like the Plantashun Boiz, Tony Tetuila, Eedris Abdulkareem, etc., Afrobeats has churned out stars like P-Square, Yemi Alade, who conquered Africa.&nbsp;

D'banj's May 2011 release 'Oliver Twist' had massive success in the United Kingdom to further push the genre, while his alliance with Kanye West's Good Music was an attempt for American acceptance.&nbsp;

The resonance of black culture has since made it easier for Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido, but it's perhaps time for a total takeover.&nbsp;

Photos have now emerged of both the Nigerian singers being arraigned in court in the East African country.&nbsp;

An emotional Omah Lay took to Twitter to narrate his ordeal and said he’s being given a fair hearing.

“I’m in cuffs in Uganda right now with Tems,” he said in a tweet.&nbsp;

“I’m just a singer trying to entertain, why am I being set up in Uganda? I didn’t organize a show, I came on stage and saw teeming fans and sang to them.

“Why am I being detained? Why am I not been given a right to a fair hearing?”&nbsp;

The singer also revealed that the police has stopped the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from securing his release.&nbsp;

“Is there something bigger at play in Uganda? Why do I have to take the fall for it?” he also asked.&nbsp;

His series of tweets on Monday, December 13 was with a different tune from his tweet the previous day when he confirmed his arrest in Uganda and assured fans that ‘everything would be fine’.&nbsp;

“Yes I’m with the Ugandan police... something about the show from last night. Everything would be fine,” he said on Sunday.&nbsp;

It was news of Omah Lay’s arrest in Uganda that broke first on Sunday.&nbsp;

Public Relations Officer of the Ugandan Police Force, SP Patrick Onyango confirmed that the singer was among three persons arrested and detained at Katwe Police Station in connection to the concert.&nbsp;

The manager of the venue where the concert held and the show promoter were also arrested.&nbsp;

Police say the organisers got the show approved by stating that it was going to be a lunch and dinner event.&nbsp;
