<h2>On May 20, 2023, the continent gathered to honour the best at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).</h2>

With&nbsp;Kunle Afolayan's Netflix Original,&nbsp;Anikulapo&nbsp;leading the pack with 16 nominations, while&nbsp;Shanty Town, and&nbsp;Jade Osiberu's action thriller,&nbsp;Brotherhood, each scored 11 nominations, the stage was set for a dramatic night.

While some of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/amvca-2023-list-of-winners/hfwrhnt">the winners</a>&nbsp;were relatively predictable, the ninth edition of the awards managed to ruffle a lot of feathers with the calibre of filmmakers who left empty-handed.

Pulse breaks down the biggest snubs and surprises of the 2023 AMVCA:

<h3>Shanty Town leaves with only one win</h3>

As previously stated, Shanty Town had some of the most nominations, so it stands to reason that the show would get a couple of trophies.

To everyone's surprise, the series only won one award despite receiving 11 nominations across various categories.

While&nbsp;Tobi Bakre&nbsp;has brought his A-game this year, no one can deny&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/pulse-interview-chidi-mokeme-speaks-on-his-scar-role-in-shanty-town/975vmew">the hard work that&nbsp;Chidi Mokeme&nbsp;put into&nbsp;Shanty Town</a>.&nbsp;Having him take home the Best Actor award would have been great for the series and a major nod to his remarkable comeback.

<h3>Best Actress goes to Osas&nbsp;Ighodaro</h3>

First, let's start by admitting that this was a tough category. With highly skilled names like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/celebrities/nse-ikpe-etim-laughs-losing-amvca-award-to-osas/33f6pw2">Nse Ikpe-Etim</a>, and newer contenders like Bimbo Ademoye, and Scarlet Gomez in the running, the race for Best Actress was a difficult one.

However, we do not think anyone saw Ighodaro's win; even the actress seemed as shocked as the rest of us when she got on the stage. This is going to be a subject of conversation for a while.

Jade Osiberu's&nbsp;Brotherhood&nbsp;is like the baby of the house that everyone keeps dotting on and deservedly so, since it's an enjoyable movie. However, tucked away in the corner away from the spotlight is&nbsp;The Trade.&nbsp;

From fantastic acting, impressive casting to compelling storytelling, this movie has it all.&nbsp;Blossom Chukwujekwu&nbsp;completely disappears into his character, delivering arguably his best performance yet.

Despite getting four nominations, being extremely good and getting rave reviews,&nbsp;The Trade&nbsp;left with nothing which is a huge letdown.

It's a well-known fact Nollywood has a writing issue, however, we have to admit that there were some interesting scripts from&nbsp;Diiche&nbsp;(Episode 5),&nbsp;Kanaani&nbsp;to&nbsp;Choke.&nbsp;

While Anikulapo did a couple of things rights, we do not think anyone saw it coming when the movie won the Best Writer award. With the rest of the worthy opponents, we have to call this&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/5-notable-omissions-from-2023-amvca-nominations-list/kshh5qx">a bona fide snub.</a>

Overall, the ninth edition of the AMVCA was equal parts great and disappointing. Kudos to the winners and a nod of recognition to the 'cheated' filmmakers, we see your hard work.

<h2>Seun Kuti's Spain concert is in jeopardy following his recent arrest.</h2>

According to Sahara Reporters, the Afrobeat musician was scheduled to perform in Majorca, Spain, today, May 20, 2023.

However, this appears to be on hold, with the singer in police detention for <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/seun-kuti-to-spend-4-extra-days-in-prison/l1p3rgg">an extra four days</a> following an extension to facilitate further investigation into his case.

Kuti was arrested after turning himself in for assaulting a police officer in uniform on the Third Mainland Bridge on Saturday, May 13, 2023.

In the viral video, the singer is seen repeatedly yelling at the officer, before hitting him in the face.

Shortly after the video surfaced on social media, the Inspector General of Police,&nbsp;Usman Baba&nbsp;put out a statement&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/celebrities/igp-orders-immediate-arrest-of-seun-kuti-for-slapping-police-officer/2bvrkkq">ordering for the arrest of the musician.</a>

"The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform.

“The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly,”&nbsp;the statement read.

He was later arraigned in court for allegedly assaulting a police officer, an offence contrary to Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.

Kuti remains in police custody until May 23, 2023.

Quan was greeted by a theatre-wide standing ovation. He had to wait for the room to settle down before delivering an emotional acceptance speech that brought the room to tears.

He beat out competitors Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan for&nbsp;'The Banshees of Inisherin,' Judd Hirsch for&nbsp;'The Fabelmans,' and Brian Tyree Henry for&nbsp;'Causeway' to secure his win for his beloved comeback performance in&nbsp;'Every­­thing Everywhere All at Once.'

Holding his trophy with his eyes full of tears, Quan said, "My mom is 84 years old. She's at home watching. Mom, I just won an Oscar! She became the first Black person to win the Oscar for costume design for her work on Marvel’s 'Black Panther' in 2019. Marking Babatunde Apalow's directorial debut, the award-winning Nigeran drama follows the story of two men, Bambino and Bawa, who meet in Lagos during a photography competition and immediately hit it off.

During long trips exploring the city, they develop a deep affection for each other. However, they have to deal with the pressure that comes with living in a society where homosexuality is illegal.

With Damilola Orimogunje attached as producer, the cast includes Tope Tedela, Riyo David, Martha Ehinome Orhiere, Uche Chika Elumelu and Floyd Anekwe.

This title was previously held by her 2020 release 'Omo Ghetto: The Saga', which raked in N636 million.

Data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) shows that the comedy-drama earned N646,532,267 and counting after spending only nine weeks in theatres.

The 2022 release follows the story of two half-sisters who have been rivals for a while. Their rivalry intensifies when they both set up their food businesses on the same street.

Directed by Akindele and Tobi Makinde, the cast includes Akindele, Mercy Johnson, Nkem Owoh, Sola Sobowale, Kelvin Ikeduba, and Tina Mba.

'Omo Ghetto: The Saga' - N636,129,120

This comedy follows the chaotic life of Shalewa aka Lefty (Funke Akindele). Lefty struggles between living a life of wealth and comfort provided by her adopted mother or returning to her ghetto lifestyle.

Released on December 25, 2020, the movie is a sequel to the actress's 2010 trilogy 'Omo Ghetto' based on twin sisters who get displaced at birth. It is directed by Akindele and her ex-husband, JJC Skillz.

'The Wedding Party' - N452,288,605

Released in December 2016, Kemi Adetiba's rom-com stayed on top as the highest-grossing Nollywood movie for four years until 'Omo Ghetto: The Saga' came along.

Made by Ebonylife Films, FilmOne, Inkblot Production and Koga Studios, it stood out for having the right amount of romance and comedy as the movie showed the hilarious drama that comes with pulling off a big wedding.

Starring celebrity couple, Adesua Etomi and Banky Wellington, the movie was both a local and international success. It continues to stay high on this list, despite being released almost seven years ago.

'The Wedding Party 2' - N433,197,377

Following the success of the first movie, Ebonylife Films, FilmOne, Inkblot Production and Koga Studios tried to recreate the same magic.

With Niyi Akinmolayan at the helm, the sequel&nbsp;delivered a bigger party set in Nigeria and Dubai, with a British and Nigerian couple.

'Chief Daddy' - N387,540,749

Within three days, it&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/chief-daddy-opens-big-in-cinemas-with-n40-million/fbksyyn">sold over N40 million</a>&nbsp;worth of movie tickets and a total of N115.7 million in the first ten days of release.&nbsp;

At the time, it was the second-highest opening weekend for a Nollywood film in 2018 and the third-highest opening weekend ever for a Nollywood film.

Directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, the movie is based on the dysfunctional family of Chief Daddy, a polygamist and philanthropist. Upon his death, his children struggle to get a fair share of their inheritance.&nbsp;

Unlike this hit movie, the sequel was <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/mo-abudu-responds-to-criticism-of-chief-daddy-2/ypgen66">met with mostly negative reactions</a>.&nbsp;

'Brotherhood' - N328,881,12

Produced by Jade Osiberu and directed by Ugandan director, Loukman Ali, the movie opened with N53.23 million. '<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/top-5-nollywood-movies-of-2022-pulse-picks/nfbwg8k">Brotherhood</a>' went on to make N118.50 million in the second week, N177.67 million in the third week and crossed the N200 million bar by the fourth week.

The blockbuster tells the story of twin brothers who find themselves in opposite directions of the law after the tragic death of their parents when they were young. One becomes a police officer while the second becomes an armed robber. The former has to hunt down the latter and bring him to justice.
