<h1>Global payments technology company, Visa, has announced the appointment of Marianne Mwaniki as senior vice president in charge of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).</h1>

Ms Mwaniki, a Kenyan banker, will be charged with building on Visa’s long history of corporate giving and to accelerate the delivery of the company’s social impact goals by helping small and microenterprises thrive.

“Marianne has a wonderful combination of strong global experience in the financial industry and a demonstrated passion for driving social change,” said William Sheedy, executive vice president of corporate strategy, mergers &amp; acquisitions and government relations at Visa.

“Her leadership will advance Visa’s commitment to strengthening communities, operating responsibly, and prioritizing the inclusiveness and growth of micro and small enterprises around the world.”

Prior to joining <a id="984530c7-16ba-556e-88bb-57995e48f1fb" href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/bi/tech/kenyan-startup-wins-visa-s-everywhere-initiative-id8663910.html">Visa</a>, Ms Mwaniki spent more than 20 years in the international banking sector, leading teams across Africa, Europe and Asia.

She previously served as managing director at Standard Chartered, handling individual clients in Africa.

Mwaniki is currently a board member of the British Chamber of Commerce Kenya and a founding member of the Africa Leadership Network. She holds a master’s degree from the London School of Economics.

Speaking during a public rally on Sunday, Magufuli said only 'lazy people' use birth control.

"You have cattle. You are big farmers. You can feed your children. Why then resort to birth control? This is my opinion, I see no reason to control births in Tanzania.

"Those going for family planning are lazy because they are afraid they will not be able to feed their children," Magufuli is quoted by The Citizen newspaper as saying.

He cited the declining population growth in parts of Europe that has led to a workforce crisis.

"I have travelled to Europe and elsewhere and have seen the harmful effects of birth control. Some countries are now facing declining population growth. They are short of manpower," Magufuli added.

Tanzania has a population of around 60 million people, up from 10 million at independence in 1961.

<h1>The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is seeking to launch a free software that will enable Kenyans transact money across different banks and telcos.</h1>

The Business Daily reports that the foundation plans to hold talks with Kenya's Central Bank in order to rollout the software known as Mojaloop.

The software will connect the six mobile money providers and 44 registered banks upon securing the necessary regulatory approvals and partnerships with industry players.

"There are three projects typically driven by central banks in three different African countries looking to deploy Mojaloop on a national scale…we will see pilots this year,” Kosta Peric, Deputy Director for the financial services for the Poor initiative at the foundation told the newspaper.

The CBK in April said it welcomes mobile money interoperability due to its benefits to customers but requires that such transactions be secure and efficient.

Founded in October last year, Mojaloop is aimed at allowing interoperability among digital payments.

The software is available free-of-cost, for software developers to adapt and banks, financial service providers and companies to implement.

<h1>Ugandan politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known as pop star Bobi Wine, has narrated the beatings he allegedly received from security officers after his arrest.</h1>

In a 3,611 word statement posted on his social media platforms, Mr Kyagulanyi - who is currently undergoing specialised treatment in the US - said he wanted to "set the record straight."

“They beat me, punched me and kicked me with their boots. No part of my body was spared,” Mr Kyagulanyi said in what was his first public statement since his arrest.

The lawmaker further alleged that security officers beat him and squeezed his genitals until he lost consciousness.

"They wrapped me in a thick piece of cloth and bundled me into a vehicle. Those guys did to me unspeakable things in that vehicle! They pulled my manhood and squeezed my testicles while punching me with objects I didn’t see.

"I continued to groan in pain and the last I heard was someone hit me at the back of the head with an object," Kyagulanyi said.

The lawmaker was arrested last month and charged with treason after some of his supporters allegedly stoned President Yoweri Museveni’s car.

He was released on bail before being re-arrested while trying to leave the country to seek medical treatment. He was subsequently allowed to depart.

<h1>Kenyas largest telecommunications operator, Safaricom, faces a fine of Sh449 million ($4.47 million) fine for failing to connect smaller firms.</h1>

Reuters reports that the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) imposed the fine on the company, which, if confirmed, would be the largest ever imposed by Kenya’s telecoms regulator.

Safaricom, however, denied any non-compliance accusations with the regulator, and accused Elige of flouting its licence conditions by carrying international traffic instead of local calls.

“It is illegal to allow such international voice traffic to be terminated by a locally licensed operator into another network through the local interconnection link,” Safaricom wrote in a letter of reply.

The firm's shares dropped 1.8 per cent to Sh27.75 after news of the fine.

Benjamin Manirambona, who heads Butere Technical College, has also been banned from teaching or holding public office for a decade.

Mr Manirambona was arrested by police officers who were roped in after receiving a tip-off.

He was taking the electronics exam for a soldier who is serving in Somalia with the Burundian peacekeeping force.

The soldier wanted the grades to qualify for university and promised to pay Manirambona upon his return. The head teacher admitted to the deception on the spot.

His two accomplices have been sentenced to two years in prison and are banned from holding public office for five years.

<h1>Seven out of the 10 least livable cities in the world are in Africa, according the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) annual survey.</h1>

The study ranks 140 cities on their urban quality of life based on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and environment.

Nigeria's largest capital, Lagos, was ranked 138 — placing it two positions ahead of Bangladesh's Dhaka and Syria's war-torn capital, Damascus.

It was closely followed by Zimbabwe's Harare (135), Libya's Tripoli (134), Cameroon's Douala (133), Algiers in Algeria (132) and Senegal's Dakar (131).

"The Middle East, Africa and Asia account for the ten lowest-scoring cities in the survey where violence, whether through crime, civil insurgency, terrorism or war, has played a strong role," the survey said.

Johannesburg was ranked 86, making it the most livable of African cities.

Globally, Vienna topped the ranking as the world's most pleasant city to live in owing to an improved security situation and a lower crime rate.

The Austrian capital dislodged Melbourne (Australia) which held the title for seven years.

This is according to an EIU study that ranks 140 cities on their urban quality of life

<h1>Tanzanias communication regulator intends to suspend licences issued to Multichoice Tanzania for charging clients to access free-to-air television channels.</h1>

The Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) said Tuesday that the DStv and GOtv services provider has on several occasions violated its licence condition to exclude the free-to-air stations from its pay-TV services.

“In exercising its powers, the authority hereby notifies the general public that it intends to suspend all the licences issued to MultiChoice Tanzania Ltd for failure to comply with the authority’s orders and failure to adhere to the licence conditions including failure to exclude free-to-air television channels from among its subscription channels,” the statement read.

According to TCRA, in delivering the licensed services Multichoice Tanzania Ltd was not authorized by its license to include free to air television channels as part of its services in subscription channels.

On July 27, the regulator said it would suspend Star Media Tanzania Limited, providers of StarTimes, for charging clients to access free-to-air channels and refusal to the pay fine it was charged for the breach of law.

<h1>12 leading tech startups from Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia have been shortlisted as finalists for Sh5 million ($50,000) funding from fintech firm Visa.</h1>

The twelve chosen were Nigerian startups VoguePay, CredPal, Loystar and Growsel as well as Kenyan startups M-Changa, Mookh, WayaWaya and LipaPlus.

Howler and FinChatBot were shortlisted from South Africa whereas Uganda and Zambia will be represented by Swipe2Pay and Brig Africa respectively.

The initiativetasks start-ups to solve commerce challenges of tomorrow, further enhance their own product propositions and provide visionary solutions for Visa’s vast network of partners.

“We are delighted with the response to our Visa’s Everywhere Initiative and the quality of submissions we received is an indication of the region’s rich talent pool and innovative spirit," said Geraldine Mitchley, senior Visa director for Digital Solutions for Sub-Sahara Africa in a statement.

The finalists were selected from 238 entries from the dynamic Sub-Saharan African (SSA) technology startup community.

One winner per challenge will be selected, with each receiving Sh2.5 million ($25,000). The overall winner will receive an additional Sh2.5 million.

Fintechs in Africa are making huge strides with the aim being expanding the ways in which people transact beyond traditional banking.

The SSA edition of the Visa’s Everywhere Initiative will wrap up on July 24 in Johannesburg, with each finalist having an opportunity to pitch their ideas to a panel of expert judges from Visa and the payments industry.

<h1>Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has been ranked the best airport in Africa and 38th globally, according to a new survey by flight compensation company AirHelp.</h1>

The ranking was based on three factors namely: on-time performance, quality of service (a combination of public reviews from reliable sites around the world) and a claims-processing score (which reflects how a company handles customer complaints).

JKIA scored an overall 7.9 out of 10; 8.3 for on-time performance, 7.2 for quality of service, and 9.3 for passenger sentiments.

This year's rating is an improvement compared to 2017 when the airport scored an overall performance of 7.1 per cent.

AirHelp examined data from December 22, 2017, to March 20, 2018, factoring in delayed and cancelled flights, public reviews from trustworthy sources and social media sentiment analysis.

Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) managing director Jonny Andersen lauded the improvement in the ranking in the wake of ongoing major modernisation works at the airport.

“JKIA airport has earned its position as a key aviation hub for the region and indeed the continent. Being the main gateway to the country, continuous improvement of service standards will aid our success in reclaiming our position as the premier tourist destination on the continent,” said Mr Andersen.

JKIA floored its African peers including Ethiopia's Addis Ababa airport which topped the continent in 2017 but is missing from this year’s list.

Qatar's Hamad international airport edged Singapore Changi airport to top spot with an overall score of 8.7.

AirHelp, a technology company founded in 2013, provides legal services to airline passengers who have experienced a flight cancellation, delay or overbooking when traveling into or out of the European Union. The firm introduced the ranking system in 2015.

<h1>A section of supporters allied to Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga have launched an online petition to have him nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.</h1>

The petition launched by Ali Abdi under UK-based change.org has 1,985 signatures so far against a target of 2,500.

Abdi, in his petition, said Kenya transformed from dictatorship to a multi-party democracy because of Mr Odinga's efforts.

"Kenyans could have been in the dark without his sacrifices. Raila has also brokered peace initiatives not only in Kenya but the African continent as a whole."

Abdi also cited the recent hand shake with President Kenyatta adding that the Orange Democratic Leader "saved Kenya from turning into a bloody civil war."

The petition has gained traction since its launch a few days ago with several users sharing the link across the globe to nominate the Opposition leader.

In 2004, the late Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan environmentalist, became the first African woman to receive the award for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.

A nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize may be submitted by any person who meets the nomination criteria.

There are 330 candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize for 2018 out of which 216 are individuals and 114 are organizations.

<h1>Kenyan tour operators have accused Tanzanian rangers of lighting fire on the Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara Game Reserve border to sabotage the migration of wildebeests to the Mara.</h1>

Tanzanians living around the Serengeti National Park are reported to have set the area on fire to delay the animals' migration, which is one of the most phenomenal natural spectacles in the world.

A large tract of the Serengeti reserve in northern Tanzania along the migratory routes is still on fire and has pushed back wildlife.

Tanzanian officials said the burning of bush is aimed at aiding regeneration of grass in the area, a claim tour guides in the Mara refuted.

The migration that was to begin two weeks ago has attracted a high number of tourists with hotels and lodges in the Mara reporting full to near-full capacity bookings.

Taunted as the eighth wonder of the world, over a million wildebeests and about 200,000 zebras and gazelles cross the border of Kenya and Tanzania for a four month stay (July-October) in the savannah of this national reserve.

The migration was expected to have started two weeks ago.

<h1>The president of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) is expected in Kenya July 21 with a plan aimed at boosting US investment in the country.</h1>

Ray Washburne is expected to meet Kenyan officials to outline his agency's three-year, $1 billion "Connect Africa" initiative.

OPIC, the United States government's development finance institution, is seeking to support the 470-kilometre, $3 billion Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway scheduled to begin construction this month under American contractor, Bechtel.

The visit comes at a time when China's influence as an investor in Africa has grown tremendously in recent years with the US seeking ways on how to better compete with the East Asian nation.

“The Chinese are in with ports and railroads and highways -- things that we need to be in as a competitor," Mr Washburne said last week during a stop in South Africa.

He also repeated Trump administration warnings that China's $126 billion "Belt and Road" investment initiative is saddling African countries with crushing levels of debt.

The new legislation recently approved by the US House would double Opic's access to US government credits to a total of $60 billion.

The scale up points to a turnaround in the White House's approach to both OPIC and Africa.

President Trump had previously sought to kill Opic while at the same time offering few positive remarks about Africa.

However, with the new proposal, Opic would be renamed the International Development Finance Corporation to highlight its primary purpose of helping US businesses make much greater investments in Africa and other developing regions.

<h1>Googles sister-company Loon announced Thursday it would deploy its system of balloons to beam high-speed internet with Telkom Kenya from 2019.</h1>

This will be Loon’s first commercial deal for in Africa as the Alphabet Inc. subsidiary seeks to offer 4G network coverage to Kenya's rural and suburban populations.

The equipment was developed by Alphabet innovation laboratory, X under the name Project Loon and it has since become a subsidiary of Alphabet, the parent company of Google.

"Loon's mission is to connect people everywhere by inventing and integrating audacious technologies," said Loon CEO Alastair Westgart. "We couldn't be more pleased to start in Kenya."

The balloons float at 60,000 feet above sea level, well above air traffic, wildlife and weather.

They are powered by an on-board solar panel, to provide broadband coverage to lower population density areas.

The balloons will be tested in Central Kenya, which has been difficult to serve because of its mountainous or inaccessible terrain.

Kenya's ICT ministry has since lauded the move saying it will bring down costs and deepen internet use across all segments of the population.

The country's major cities and towns are covered by operator networks, but large parts of rural Kenya are not.

<h1>Even in the wildest of his dreams, 28-year-old James Mwangi never thought of owning a house.</h1>

“I had never imagined owning a parcel of land, leave alone a house, before the age of 30," Mwangi, a boda boda (motorcycle taxi) rider told the Nation newspaper.

However, thanks to an initial savings of Ksh50, Mwangi and a group of other boda boda operators in Nanyuki town, Laikipia county will soon be proud owners of houses worth Sh95million.

The Chama (group) started in 2011 with an initial aim of helping members borrow money to buy spare parts or bail themselves out in case they were arrested by the traffic police.

After a while, the chama's agenda broadened and the Nanyuki Boda Boda Sacco (Nabosa) was registered with the aim of helping members buy new motorcycles.

In 2015, the idea of the housing scheme was born and soon the riders will own houses in the gated community that sits on a six-acre piece of land that cost Sh7 million.

The project has 50 starter units (bedsitters) and 10 one-bedroomed houses.

The 60 members who were registered for the first 60 units in the first phase will occupy the starter units and one-bedroomed houses.

According to the chairman of the housing project, Patrick Waithaka, they intend to build 120 units for members who have raised the required Sh160,000 minimum deposit for the starter units and Sh212,000 for the one-bedroom houses.

The second phase will see the completion of one-bedroom houses worth Sh960,000 and will roll out immediately after the first group occupies the 60 units.

Mr Waithaka said the second phase of the project will be open to non-members.

“We shall incorporate outsiders in the second phase since we still have enough space to build more houses."

The operators have partnered with National Cooperative Housing Union to finance the project, where members will pay low-interest rates.

Mwangi Miano, a beneficiary of the project said he had to sacrifice and concentrate on saving so that he could own land and a house.
