The feeling can even manifest itself physically and "elicit the somatic experiences of warmth in the body, butterflies in the stomach, or even aching in the chest." Yay.</p>

<p>And as if that werent enough, that pang of missing someone has a habit of busting its way into your brain all. the. damn. timeusually when you least expect it. Suddenly realize the ice cream you're eating is your ex's favorite flavor? It happens. And when the song you used to jam to with your long-distance BFF comes on shuffle, itll happen then, too. </p>

<p>Given the spontaneity of all those missing-somebody-sensations, you might just shrug your shoulders and give up on trying to do anything about it, but Hargons suggests otherwise. "As with all feelings, identifying them and allowing yourself to feel them helps you process the emotion," she says. "In the end, processed emotions are more likely to pass and not keep you stuck in a cycle of behaviors used to prevent yourself from feeling."</p>

<p>But that doesnt mean what helps you process your emotions in one situation (missing your cross-country bestie) will work in another (yearning for your first love), she adds. "Since there are so many reasons why you might miss someone, each requires an intentional response."</p>

<p>Admittedly, this is when things get even trickier. How the heck do you decide what the best move is when youre already feeling down and <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/a31931640/what-to-do-feeling-lonely/" id="f5a4f559-47eb-3bb7-aa2c-12fe3054814b">  lonely </a> ? Given the emotional toll missing someone can take, you could end up doing something you regret. Don't worry, thats where an expert comes in. <h1> When you're missing someone who's moved away:  </h1>

<p>"Reach out to them by text, call, or social media, and let them know they crossed your mind," says Hargons. Sure, it sounds like the obvious choice. But think about it: How many times have you thought about reaching out to someone and never ended up doing it?</p>

<p>Sorry, but it's not the thought that counts here. Instead, once you do get to chatting again, make plans to visit each other, Hargons suggests, and get some virtual hangs on the cal in the meantime. You might start a monthly virtual book club, or cook the same meals at your respective homes and eat together over video call until you can do so face-to-face. <p>Chances are you're missing this person every single day. But when the sting of loss feels especially sharp, Hargons suggests writing a journal entry detailing what you miss about this person most. Just the process of organizing your thoughts and feelings on paper can relieve some of the pressure. If that doesn't work for you, try talking it out with someone or a group of people who miss that person, too, says Hargons. Sharing and listening will remind you you're not alone. The conversation might also introduce you to a coping mechanism you never considered, or spark a happy memory about that person that had started to fade.</p>

<p>Sometimes, loss feels too personal for group discussion, and that's okay. In fact, it's normal. <p>"This one depends on whether you want to be with that person again," says Hargons. Simply missing them doesn't necessarily mean you're meant to be. You might just be craving touch, affection, or even attention (no shame in that), but it's important that you process those feelings on your ownor with a therapistfor as long as you need to before you even consider shooting that person a casual "hey, how've you been?" text.</p>

<p>Processing these feelings means considering why the relationship ended, says Hargons. Then, figure out whether those factors have since changed for the better, whether getting back together is a healthy option, and how reaching out might impact both of your livesespecially if one or both of you have already moved on. </p>

<p>People grow apart. It's a hard truth, but a necessary one to remember. Maybe your friend got married and started a family, and your priorities just don't line up anymore. Maybe their career is taking off, and you're having a hard time keeping up. Sometimes, growth like this is out of your control, but that doesn't mean you can't try to get back on the same page. It's just going to require some honest conversation. </p>

<p>If so, make plans to go out together once a month sans kids or partners, or tag along to one of their work events so you can get to know the coworkers they keep raving about. Sure, things might be different, but this way they don't have to end.</p>

<p>It's also worth considering that it's actually you who's changed. It's entirely possible that the people in your life are having a hard time relating to the new(ish) person you've become. Or maybe, you miss the "old you" who was more spontaneous and went out dancing on a random Wednesday night. "Identify the reasons you've changed," says Hargons. "Then, write down which parts of yourself you want to reclaim and those you want to leave behind." With this tangible plan, you can move forward as the absolute best version of yourself. </p>

<p>Don't let the fear of feeling awkward keep you from hitting them up. If you find yourself randomly laughing to yourself about the good ole days, they probably are, too. Kick things off by sending them an old photo of the two of you because nostalgia's always a good way to reestablish common ground. </p>

<p>Once you get to talking about all the trouble you used to get into, make the switch to the present and ask them what kind of trouble they're getting into these days. Soon enough, it'll be like no time's gone by at all.</p>

<p>The Netflix miniseries When They See Us, directed by Ava DuVernay, made waves in Hollywood when it premiered last year, telling <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/a27394351/central-park-five-true-story/" id="5c51f08e-84e6-3c44-aa8d-0dd1a0b6ed79">  the true story of the Central Park Five </a> . Last week, Netflix added the show to its inaugural <a href="https://www.adweek.com/tv-video/netflix-releases-black-lives-matter-collection-as-streamers-highlight-black-storytelling/" id="0fc1b7a7-cb58-36f8-aeec-7c4312112cac">  Black Lives Matter collection </a> , and it's been one of the platform's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-trending-tv-shows-when-they-see-us-legendary-2020-6" id="a974433b-85c0-3e7a-ad14-7fe814bfeab5">  most-streamed shows </a> of the month. It also won a much-deserved Peabody award <a href="https://deadline.com/2020/06/peabody-awards-winners-2020-list-tv-1202955321/" id="ee0b7ba7-555e-3630-a00d-6930c1977f06">  last week </a> .</p>

<p>The Central Park Five, now known as the Exonerated Five, were a group of Black and Latinx boys between the ages of 14 and 16 who were wrongfully accused of raping and beating a woman known as the Central Park Jogger in 1989. </p>

<p>One of the five, Raymond Santana, tweeted at DuVernay in 2015 about his <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/ava-duvernay-tackling-central-park-five-netflix-series-they-see-us-1212466" id="d7bdd333-b0f6-3252-a48f-90e3bff2b0cd">  "#wishfulthinking" </a> that she would make a film about their experience, and she direct-messaged him right away.</p>

<p>"It wasn't an idea that I pitched to them," DuVernay told <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/ava-duvernay-tackling-central-park-five-netflix-series-they-see-us-1212466" id="3ce80572-b8d5-36e1-a097-4cbc2a911395">  the Hollywood Reporter </a> in May 2019. "It was an idea that they pitched to me, and I was honored that they chose me."</p>

<p>At first, she wasn't sure she could make the film, she told <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-features/when-they-see-us-netflix-central-park-five-ava-duvernay-interview-841081/" id="15f59e4a-6308-3977-a727-2b6a8827ad77">  Rolling Stone </a> . "But once I met him and then gradually met all of the other men, I felt like I had to make it," Duvernay explained.</p>

<p>Beyond the infamous trial itself, When They See Us depicts what it's like to be a young Black man in America, and DuVernay kept counselors on set for the actors and crew members, in case the scenes hit too close to home. "It's the fear of being a young Black teen in the streets of New York City," Michael K. Williams, who portrayed one of the boys' fathers, told <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/ava-duvernay-tackling-central-park-five-netflix-series-they-see-us-1212466" id="0f566a44-c96c-3a91-ade6-311577a14f43">  THR </a> . "Fearing that I'm going to get snatched up, and the impact it had on some of my bad decision-making as a young adult. A lot of those personal things came up."</p>

<p>The five teenage boys (who are now in their mid-forties) were accused of raping and brutally beating Trisha Meili, a 28-year-old white woman jogging in Central Park after work. Meili was found naked, tied up, and gagged near a wooded section of the park, according to the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2002/10/27/nyregion/urban-studies-jogging-woods-are-the-same-but-nothing-else.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FMeili%2C%20Trisha&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=timestopics&amp;region=stream&amp;module=stream_unit&amp;version=latest&amp;contentPlacement=41&amp;pgtype=collection&amp;mtrref=www.refinery29.com" id="51326fd9-6ae4-32f9-a7b6-e289acf1538d">  New York Times </a> . She woke up from a coma 12 days later with no memory of what happened.</p>

<p>Before their convictions were overturned, each member of the Exonerated Five spent a significant amount of time in prison. Here's how much time they served before their 2002 exonerations: </p>

<p>Found guilty of rape and assault, according to the <a href="https://www.innocenceproject.org/cases/yusef-salaam/" id="97622584-3299-308e-abca-5ff4f747d071">  Innocence Project </a> (the organization that eventually helped exonerate the men), Salaam was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison when he was 14 years old. <strong> He was released after 6 years and 8 months.  </strong></p>

<p>Since his release, Salaam has become a father, inspirational speaker, and the recipient of a 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award given to him by President Barack Obama. </p>

<p>At 16 years old, Wise was convicted of assault, sexual abuse, and riot, per the <a href="https://www.innocenceproject.org/cases/korey-wise/" id="301744c7-ce69-3a3c-a988-2a4de0beef53">  Innocence Project </a> . <strong> He served 12 years in prison for his five-to-15-year sentence.  </strong> Of the five boys, Wise was the only one tried as an adult.</p>

<p>"When I first met Korey, within 15 minutes he said, 'There is no Central Park Five, its four plus one,'" DuVernay told <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-features/when-they-see-us-netflix-central-park-five-ava-duvernay-interview-841081/" id="15f59e4a-6308-3977-a727-2b6a8827ad77">  Rolling Stone </a> . "And I never forgot that. He looked me in the eyes and he said, 'They had an experience, and I had an experience. They are not the same.' He had some pain and some anger about being lumped in to the Central Park Five when the four were in juvenile hall detention. They eventually all went to adult prison, but they got out when he was continuing to serve time. And he was always in an adult prison; he never experienced juvenile detention."</p>

<p>After changing his first name to Korey from Kharey, Wise donated $190,000 (a portion of the $41 million dollar the Exonerated Five were awarded by the state of New York) to the Innocence Project. The <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/law/2015/12/09/wrongfully-convicted-central-park-five-defendant-makes-gift-renaming-innocence-project" id="35ff841f-37f3-39fa-a761-72fd83f33a6a">  Colorado chapter of the organization </a> is now named after him. He is an advocate for those who've been wrongly convicted and lives in New York.</p>

<p><strong> Richardson served five and a half years  </strong> of his five-to-10-year sentence, according to the <a href="https://www.innocenceproject.org/cases/kevin-richardson/" id="2e726bc9-acdb-3e38-a2ee-9642f3a4480c">  Innocence Project </a> . He was charged and convicted at 14 years old for attempted murder, rape, sodomy, and robbery.</p>

<p>Richardson, now married with children, works with the Innocence Project, speaking about criminal justice reform.</p>

<p>For a crime he did not commit, Santana was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison for rape and assault. <strong> He served five years, </strong> per the <a href="https://www.innocenceproject.org/cases/raymond-santana/" id="31cad572-0932-3399-a61b-b317671d946d">  Innocence Project </a> , from ages 14 to 19.</p>

<p>Santana is now living in Georgia with his daughter. He started a clothing company called <a href="https://parkmadisonnyc.com/" id="66ae460c-eb46-3b85-aa1d-f03844d4b9e5">  Park Madison NYC </a> , per <a href="https://people.com/crime/the-central-park-five-where-they-are-now/#giving-back-after-losing-so-much" id="3ddaa623-c10c-3db8-a90e-75dbc9921cfe">  People </a> . <p>At 15 years old, Antron McCray was convicted of rape and assault, per the <a href="https://www.innocenceproject.org/cases/Antron-mccray/" id="ad01def2-e7e0-3f26-a000-fd1eaa5dbe3f">  Innocence Project </a> , and sentenced to five to 10 years in prison. <strong> He served six years </strong> before his exoneration.</p>

<p>It feels like a betrayaland suddenly you're spitting out that chunk of your precious apple or holding your moldy slice of bread over the garbage can, contemplating calling your mom for her to reassure you that nothing too terrible happens if you eat mold. </p>

<p>Whether you're tempted to rinse out your mouth with Listerine for a good 10 minutes or just cut around the mold and keep chomping away, know this: Eating moldy food probably won't do you too much harm, let alone kill you, according to Rudolph Bedford, MD, a gastroenterologist at Providence Saint Johns Health Center in Santa Monica.</p>

<p>Actually, sad and grossed out as you may be about eating (or almost eating) that blue fuzz, you'll probably be fine, he says. </p>

<p>However, there are a few things you should keep in mind when it comes to dealing with (and, gulp, ingesting) moldy foodespecially considering that, on rare occasions, it can actually make you sick.</p>

<p>Before you brazenly continue noshing on your fruit or popping that toast in the toaster, here's the low-down on everything that can happen if you eat mold. </p>

<h1>  Give it to me straight. What happens if I eat mold?  </h1>

<p>Don't run to the bathroom to scrub your tongue with a bar of soap just yet. Youre not going to die from eating mold, says Dr. Bedford. In fact, as long as your <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a32464311/does-hand-sanitizer-weaken-immune-system/" id="ea1da559-0c86-3146-a7b3-1ca01160af9e">  immune system is in good shape </a> , you can digest it like any other food.</p>

<p>Though molds (a.k.a. microscopic fungi)which creep up on plant and animal products after being transported there by air, water, or insectscan be dangerous, they usually arent, according to the <a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/wcm/connect/a87cdc2c-6ddd-49f0-bd1f-393086742e68/Molds_on_Food.pdf?MOD=AJPERES" id="84febfa6-945d-3054-af4e-f7f9b21ba4a0">  USDA </a> .</p>

<p>After all, molds are actually meant to be on certain foodsincluding dry-cured country hams and cheeses such as blue cheese, Gorgonzola, Brie, and Camembert. In many of these cases, mold is totally safe to eat, the USDA says.</p>

<p>But what about the fuzzy green or white stuff that pops up unannounced on fruits, vegetables, bread, and dairy products? </p>

<p>You might feel sick after accidentally eating these molds, but that's most likely because the mold tastes bad, not because of any particular toxin in it, says Dr. Bedford.</p>

<p>Even then, he recommends waiting to see if your symptoms escalate beyond <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a19922291/reasons-for-nausea/" id="146a682e-4166-3ab5-a2b4-a90b182f2e9a">  nausea </a> before rushing to call the doctor. The stomach is a harsh environment, so, for the most part, most bacteria and fungus won't survive, he explains.</p>

<h1>  But what if I do get super sick from eating moldy food?   </h1>

<p>Its very uncommon that youre going to get [really] sick from mold, says Dr. Bedford. And in the rare instance that you do, you'll likely have had to consume large amounts of the stuff. (And, c'mon, are you really going to keep licking the fuzz off your food? I didn't think so.)</p>

<p>If the unlikely occurs, though, and your  <strong> symptoms include persistent nausea and vomiting </strong> , you should definitely call the doctor, Dr. Bedford says. Typically, he'd just prescribe anti-nausea medicationbut if you're really feeling miserable, he might prescribe something to induce vomiting or diarrhea to try to flush out your system. </p>

<p>In some cases, people have allergic reactions to certain molds, which can contribute to respiratory issues, says Dr. Bedford. But don't worry, they're usually temporary and easily treated by your doctor. </p>

<p>Ultimately, though, don't get too freaked out: In his 30 years of practice, Dr. Bedford says he has never seen anyone die or require more intense treatment due to mold (though that doesn't mean it's impossible). </p>

<p>Just take mold as a sign that your foods gone bad and move on. </p>

<p>If you're not too skeeved out by that patch of mold on your eats, you might be tempted to just cut it off and continue eating, but whether or not this is actually a good idea depends on the food. </p>

<p>Though we only see their fuzzy discolored tops, all molds have roots that invade foods, according to the <a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/wcm/connect/a87cdc2c-6ddd-49f0-bd1f-393086742e68/Molds_on_Food.pdf?MOD=AJPERES" id="84febfa6-945d-3054-af4e-f7f9b21ba4a0">  USDA </a> . Since these roots allow toxins (if there are any) to spread throughout the inside of your food, your best move is to throw out the moldy food in its entirety, regardless of where you see the moldy patch, Dr. Bedford says.</p>

<p>Still, mold can't penetrate certain hard cheeses, hard salami, firm fruits, and vegetables as easily as softer foods, the USDA says. That makes these foods easier to save from a fuzzy patch. Just make sure to cut off at least an inch around and below the moldy spot, keep your knife out of the mold, and wrap the good part of the food in a new covering. </p>

<p><strong> For quick reference, these food are generally okay to eat once you cut off any mold: </strong></p>

<ul><li> Hard cheeses </li><li> Hard salami </li><li> Firm fruits </li><li> Vegetables </li></ul>

<p><strong> These foods, meanwhile, should be thrown away if at all moldy:  </strong></p>

<ul><li> Soft cheeses (that are not meant to be moldy) </li><li> Soft fruits </li><li> Baked goods </li><li> Legumes </li><li> Nuts </li><li> Yogurt </li><li> Jams </li><li> Meat </li><li> Bread </li></ul>

<p>Also, FYI, toasting your bread will not kill the mold on it, so don't even go there. Since bread is super porous, it's definitely one to chuck at the first sign of fuzz, says the USDA.</p>

<h1>  How can I prevent mold from forming in the first place?  </h1>

<p>Since warm, humid conditions encourage mold growthand dry mold spores float through the air in search of new places in which to grow some more moldy friendsthe USDA recommends a few best practices for keeping mold from messing with your food:</p>

<ul><li> Examine foods for mold before buying them </li><li> Purchase food in small amounts so mold doesn't have time to grow </li><li> Cover food with plastic wrap </li><li> Stash food in the refrigerator quickly </li><li> Eat leftovers within three or four days </li><li> Clean your refrigerator regularly </li><li> Keep your home's humidity level below 40 percent </li></ul>

<p>Of course, molds can still grow in the refrigerator (albeit much more slowly), but following these guidelines can help keep your eats fresh and fuzz-free for as long as possible. </p>

<p><strong> The bottom line </strong> : Eating moldy food probably won't make you sick, but most foods should be thrown away at the first sign of fuzz. To prevent mold growth, properly wrap all food and store it in a clean, dry refrigerator.</p>
