How Ghana blew over GH₵83 million on appearance fees in 3 World Cup matches - Report

Akin to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil where Ghana crashed out of the group stages amid widespread allegations of financial mismanagement, a shocking report has just emerged on how the country blew close to six million dollars at the last edition.

Ghana reportedly spent $5.4 million on appearances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

According to reports, this expenditure includes $20,000 for coach Otto Addo’s personal assistant. The Ministry’s purse holder was also paid $10,000 at the Global Mundial.

Another surprising detail in the report states that 54 people, including the playing body, were each given $100,000 for their time in Qatar.

However, there are no details about the remaining 28 individuals.

This report was shared by renowned sports journalist Fentuo Tahiru Fentuo on his official X (formerly Twitter) account today.

Detailed Black Stars expenditure

He detailed what the report entails below:

Just got hold of detailed breakdown of the GFA's budget they presented to the Sports Ministry for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and some of the things on there are interesting. For example, Otto Addo's Personal Assistant was paid $20,000. He/she earned the same amount as Ghana's scouts.

The Ministry's purse holder was paid $10,000 for doing his job. And the mind-blowing line item of them all was the $100,000 appearance fee for, wait for it, FIFTY-FOUR (54). There were 26 players - it means beyond the players, 28 others were budgeted to be paid $100k each. Who are these people? You prepare this kind of budget and when the backlash comes, you release statement and say you don't spend the money, the ministry does. Who asked for that amount to be spent? Ridiculous.

Meanwhile, there has been no official response or rebuttal from any official involved in this report yet.
