GFA EXCO Member: Black Stars captaincy issues poorly managed

Nana Oduro Sarfo, a member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council, has openly admitted that the handling of the Black Stars' captaincy has been poorly managed in the past, leading to unnecessary controversies and instability within the national team.

Speaking in an interview with Connect 97.1 FM, Oduro Sarfo highlighted the challenges faced by various leadership teams in managing captaincy transitions smoothly, which has often resulted in tension among players and dissatisfaction among fans.

Captaincy issues have genuinely brought so many bad times for the Black Stars. They are largely the decision of the coach, but I concur it has been mismanaged throughout the years.

Under the current leadership of head coach Otto Addo, the captaincy debate has resurfaced, causing further unrest.

Addo initially named Mohammed Kudus as captain for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, a decision that sparked widespread criticism, particularly for overlooking Jordan Ayew for the role.

The backlash forced Addo to reverse his decision, reigniting discussions about the team's leadership structure.

Recent reports suggest that Otto Addo is now considering naming Jordan Ayew as the permanent captain of the Black Stars.

However, the situation remains complicated, as Thomas Partey has reportedly declined the role of deputy captain.

What's next for the Black Stars?

Looking ahead, the Black Stars face the challenge of resolving these internal issues to focus on their upcoming matches.

The team, led by Otto Addo, is set to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

After failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the Black Stars are determined to secure a spot in the World Cup and restore confidence among their supporters.

The GFA and team management will need to address the captaincy concerns decisively to ensure stability and unity as the Black Stars aim for success in their upcoming campaigns.
