A major sandstorm has hit the United Arab Emirates, heavily affecting visibility in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

BBC reports that high winds have whipped up desert sands, severely reducing visibility and causing residents to suffer breathing difficulties.

Also many passengers have been left stranded as the storm has caused flights to be diverted from the Dubai International Airport.

Meanwhile in Abu Dhabi, a serious accident has been recorded owing to the very poor visibility, with Abu Dhabi police reporting that a 24-year-old has been airlifted to the hospital after being seriously injured in the accident.

Forecasters have also predicted that the storm could last several days while the United Arab Emirates' National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology warned of reduced visibility of as little as 500 meters.

Though sandstorms are not unusual in the UAE, some residents have found the weather shocking.
