It all went down while he was on location in Atlanta, filming the Suicide Squad sequel , and missing his home country of Sweden.
"Yeah, I struggle with this Instagram thing, you know?" He began. "I'm obsessed with the Swedish soccer team, I actually played in the team when I was younger and I follow all the games. And this year, we're like... we're right up there in the top, and we're playing our biggest rival, and I have a day off, and i'm watching the game at home in my apartment in Atlanta. And I'm really excited, but I feel a little lonely, because all my friends are on the other side of the Atlantic... so to feel a little connected with everyone, I'm filming the game while I'm watching it, and I hear the fans singing... and then I upload it to Instagram."
So far, so innocent. Kinnaman carried on watching the game, his mood boosted, and before long his phone was blowing up.
"And I'm getting comments, so I feel a little connected," he says. "Then my girlfriend calls me, and it's a really intense part of the game, usually I'd answer but I let it slip to voicemail. And she calls again, and I'm like, 'it's nearly halftime, I'll call her at halftime'... And then she calls a third time. And there's something about that third call that kind of stuck out a little bit because she doesn't call me three times in a row. So I pick up and I'm like, 'Hey babe, you know, I'm watching the game.' And she's like, 'Yeah, I know.' I'm like, 'Oh yeah, you saw it on Instagram.' And I'm like, 'Yeah, you know, I'm just trying to feel a little connected to the game.' She was like, 'No, no, no. We can all tell that you're really excited, because you're showing the whole world that you watch soccer naked.'"
Turns out, Kinnaman didn't take into account the fact that his reflection could be seen in the TV screen that he was filming or that, as his girlfriend put it, it looked like he had the A.C. running extra cold that day.
As the star of Netflix's science fiction series Altered Carbon, Kinnaman is used to the world seeing him naked; he got shredded to play the lead in the sex scene-heavy show, and pretty much bared all for the marketing campaign. But there's a world of difference between getting jacked for a job and unwittingly sending nudes to the whole internet.
Kinnaman promptly deleted the video, but not before watching it back and cringing at his nude soccer singalong. Still, it could have been worse, he said: "Only like 25,000 people saw it, so it's all good."
