After being swept in the first round of the playoffs, the Memphis Grizzlies have dismissed head coach Dave Joerger.

General Manager Chris Wallace announced the decision in a statement on Saturday.

It read: "After careful consideration, I concluded that a change was needed to foster the strong culture required to achieve sustainable, long-term success for this organisation, the city and our fans.

"On behalf of the Grizzlies organisation I would like to thank Dave for his work and time in Memphis. We wish Dave and his family all the best and success as he moves forward in his career."

Reports have indicated Joerger recently received permission to talk with other NBA teams about vacancies and has allegedly moved to the top of the list for the Sacramento Kings in their hunt for a new coach.

Joerger had been with the Grizzlies for nine seasons, starting as an assistant coach before being named head coach in June 2013.

While he boasted an impressive regular-season win-loss record of 147-99, the Grizzlies struggled in the postseason under his stewardship, going 9-13 in the playoffs, inlcuding the first-round sweep at the hands of the San Antonio Spurs.

However, Joerger earned praise around the league for getting his team to keep fighting in the face of injuries this year. The Grizzlies used 28 different players this season.
