An Accra High Court will today, Monday, October 31, rule on a case between Hassan Ayariga’s All People’s Congress (APC) and the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana over his disqualification from contesting in the presidential race.

This follows a court ruling asking the EC to allow the Presidential nominee of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) to rectify the anomalies in his nomination forms so the Commission could accept it.

Hassan Ayariga after the PPP's ruling said he was optimistic the court will rule in his favour.

“We congratulate the lawyers of the PPP and the court for doing the right thing. We want to promote multiparty democracy and not to destroy it. The EC must act properly because their credibility is in question now.”

“Clearly, this is all that we have all been asking for. There’s a period of opening of nominations and it has to be gazetted. ... The EC didn’t do that…and in the CI 94, there are clauses that state that you must give the candidates the opportunity to make corrections,” he added.

Ayariga was one of the thirteen presidential hopefuls who were disqualified by the EC over some errors in their nomination forms.

The aspirant on the ticket of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings also went to court to seek redress but the case was dismissed. She has since filed a fresh suit.
