Seven Cameroonian players decline AFCON call-up

Seven players have declined the Cameroonian selection for CAN 2017. Among them are Joël Matip (Liverpool) and André Onana (Ajax).

Seven players pre-selected for CAN 2017 (14 January-5 February) by Cameroon coach Hugo Broos, namely André Onana of Ajax Amsterdam, Guy Roland Ndy Assembe of Nancy, Joël Matip of Liverpool, Allan Nyom Bromwich), Maxime Poundjé (Bordeaux), André Zambo Anguissa (Olympique Marseille) and Ibrahim Amadou (Lille) have declined their call for various reasons.

The Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) does not hide its wrath towards the Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper.

" These are players who put their personal interests before those of the national team ", says the federation. "

Coach Hugo Broos is not happy either. " I am especially disappointed for the fans who logically expect to see the best players to defend the colors of the country ," he said.

" But on the other hand I am firmly resolved to call only those who are determined to fully engage in the championship ... ".

However, the national coach wants to reassure the opinion that he will put in place the best team possible with players motivated and determined to defend the colors of Cameroon. The list of 23 players selected for CAN 2017 as well as the preparation program will be made public as soon as possible.

The African Nations Cup will take place in Gabon from 14 January to 5 February.
