The Minister of Energy designate, Boakye Agyarko, has been accused by the Minority in Parliament of attempting to bribe them with an amount of 3,000 cedis.

The allegation was made by Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for the Bawku Central Constituency on Accra-based Radio Gold. According to him, they (the minority) received the money thinking it was sitting allowance for being part of the Appointments Committee only to be told it was coming from the minister designate.

They rejected the money and asked that the money be returned to him.

The Majority New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament have approved Senior Minister Nominee, Osafo Maafo, and Energy Minister Nominee, Boakye Agyarko.

The approval of the duo was however without the Minority’s support. Parliament on Thursday approved only eight out of the 13 nominees vetted so far.

The approval of Boakye Agyarko as the next Energy Minister was said to have been in limbo following some allegations of perjury against his testimony before the Appointments Committee.

Analysis

Mahama Ayariga’s claims will for now have to be taken on face value as he did not provide evidence of the claims. It also appears strange why the minister designate would attempt to bribe the minority when he belongs to the majority side which acts as a rubber stamp for ministerial appointments.
