Osafo Maafo, Agyarko cleared without Minority approval

Parliament on Thursday approved only eight out of the 13 nominees vetted so far.

The approval is, however, without the Minority’s support.

Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Maafo, Energy Minister-designate Boakye Agyarko and three others were not part of the list recommended for approval.

The committee was said not to be convinced about the response of the Senior Minister-designate to alleged ethnocentric comments he reportedly made when he met some party members in the Eastern Region.

The approval of Boakye Agyarko as the next Energy Minister was said to have been in limbo following some allegations of perjury against his testimony before the Appointments Committee.

The two have since submitted documentary evidence as part of efforts to ensure their approval, but the Minority is still not convinced.

A report by the Parliament Appointment’s Committee indicated that “all the nominees demonstrated through their answers to questions posed to them by members of the committee that they have the intellectual capacity, skill, experience and the requisite training to

b) “necessary for the efficient running of the state” as envisaged by Articles 76 (2) and 78 (2) of the constitution.”

It added that “notwithstanding the forgoing, Members of the minority on the Committee, have indicated that they do not support the recommendation to approve Hon. Yaw Osafo-Maafo, the Senior Minister-Designate and Mr. Boakye the Energy Minister-Designate by consensus.

It said that “consequently in accordance with order 172 (4) o the standing orders of the House of the Committee recommends to the House to approve the nomination by majority decision. i) Mr. Yaw Osafo-Maafo ii) Mr. Boakye Agyarko.”
