NPP can only shout on new voters' register

The NPP needs to “shut up” about the voter’s register and focus on getting itself in order, Pulse journalist Emmanuel Tornyi says.

It is pathetic as to how the leadership and followers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are working to jeopardize and disrupt the nation's ultimate pride of peace and security.

The claim that the names of over 76, 000 Togolese are found in the voters’ register of Ghana, particularly in the Volta Region, seems to be devoid of the realities of life on the ground. From this angle, the claim is spurious at best, if not devious and deceitful in intent and purpose.

In pursuance of these, the leadership of NPP upon several attempts landed on attacking the integrity of the nation’s electoral system immediately after their baseless argument in the Supreme court of Ghana.

The first phase of this was when NPP attacked the personality of the EC appointed by President John Mahama in line with the full provisions of our Constitution. Some allegations by the NPP were:

The EC will be partial and favour NDC in the execution of her mandate which contradict the independenct of the commission.

However NPP was unable to effectively push forward these argument due to lack of strong evidence to support their irrelevant claims. Upon realising the weakness of their above argument, they quickly resorted to the issue of the voter’s register.

The failed leadership of the NPP, frustrated followers and other disappointed members of the party are demanding and pressuring the Electoral Commission of Ghana to rely on their baseless research with a misplaced methodology to change the entire voter’s register under duress to their benefits.

Currently, everything is being done haphazardly with a lot of cards being issued by different institutions for identification.

But the national identification card, according to law, should be the card used for every transaction that requires identification.

As it stands, every Ghanaian who is over 18 years of age has at least five functioning identification cards.

There is the voter’s identification card, the driver’s licence, bank card (ATM), passport and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) card.

A few lucky ones also have the National Identification Authority (NIA) card, which is supposed to be a uniformed card that serves as the national ID.

The question is why have all these cards not been harmonised to give the Ghanaian citizen a unique security card which can be accessed by all, be it the bank, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), police, hospitals and can as well be used as a voter ID?

Members of the NPP party are still struggling to find the cause of the party’s excruciating defeats in the last two presidential elections.

Nana Addo has been blamed by some stalwarts as the party’s biggest problem with some saying the biggest opposition party could have avoided the repeated defeat it suffered at elections if the party’s twice defeated presidential candidate was changed.

The NPP must focus on helping the EC in cleaning up the register and unite the party to wrestle power from the insensitive, incompetent NDC government in 2016, rather than shouting about a new voters' register.

In view of all these issues, I humbly suggest to the currently divided NPP to shut up on the issue of the new voter’s register and make Ghanaians enjoy the peace we have in the country and also give NDC a break in 2016, organise and solve their internal problems in 2020, elect competent leaders for the party in 2024 and come for a good contest in 2028.
