Out of 56,772, the EC explained that only 22,107 of the deleted NHIS registrants were registered during the 10-day exercise.

Addressing the media today (Friday, July 29), Communications Director of the Commission Eric Dzakpasu explained that there is no certainty that an extension will see more people registering.

“There is no evidence that when an extension is granted, the remaining people will come out of their houses or communities to get their name re-registered.”

“In the considered opinion of the commission, the registration exercise could not be extended,” he said.

Member of Parliament of the Efutu constituency earlier petitioned the ECto extend the re-registration date of NHIS card registrants by another 10 days.

But, Dzakpasu explained that the EC is expected by law “to exhibit the provisional register of the persons re-registered”. He said they will need enough time to process the captured data to be subsequently exhibited.

“It necessarily follows that the data captured must be processed. This means we would require some time to be able to do that in order to be in the position to exhibit the provisional register for the registrants from the fifth to eight August 2016 as agreed at the IPAC.”

Dzakpasu also said the EC will not take responsibility for the supposed low turnout of voters to check their details during the voter exhibition exercise.

“It cannot be the case that the low turnout was caused by low publicity. The message was well disseminated. If people actually wanted to get registered, they could have done so with the 10 days.”
