EC announces modalities for the re-registration of deleted NHIS card registrants

The Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed its strategy for the re-registration of registered voters whose details have been removed from the electorate register because they registered with a National Health Insurance Card ahead of the 2012 elections.

The Supreme Court ordered the EC on May 5 to delete from the voters' register names of minors, those who registered with NHIS cards and dead people. The Commission in complying with the order removed some 56, 772 names. The EC later announced that it would exhibit and re-register the affected voters.

The EC in a statement said it would publish the names of the affected persons at the EC offices in the district assemblies and the district assemblies.

It also said it would provide a list of the deleted names to the various political parties.

At the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Thursday, July 12, 2016, the Commission informed the parties that the names of the 56,772 NHIS card registrants submitted to the Supreme Court have been deleted from the Voters Register database in compliance with the orders of the Supreme Court. All parties unanimously endorsed the Commission’s modalities for re-registration of the NHIS card registrants in compliance with the Court’s order. The agreed modalities as follows:

The Commission has fully rolled out all the above agreements since the start of the re-registration exercise.
