Blame Rawlings for our defeat - NDC

The Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has blamed the former President Rawlings for the party’s defeat in the 2016 general elections.

Mr Anthony Nukpenu argues that the founder’s absence from the campaign seriously affected the party’s chances at the polls.

Nana Addo of the New Patriotic Party polled 5, 716,026 million votes representing 53.85 % to beat the incumbent president John Dramani Mahama who had 4, 713,277 million votes representing 44.40 %.

Many have already indicated that the absence of Mr Rawlings in the NDC’s campaign shows the level of disagreement between him and leaders of the party.

Minister for Communications, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah had claimed in August this year that President Mahama does not need the endorsement of former President Jerry John Rawlings to win the December 7 elections.

But the NDC Greater Accra Regional Organiser Anthony Nukpenu has stressed that Mr Rawlings could have increased the votes of the NDC, particularly, in the Volta region.

“He [Rawlings] deliberately worked against the party in so many ways to undermine the integrity of the NDC and its flagbearer to make sure we were defeated at the polls," he told Accra-based Adom FM.

Mr Nukpenu, however, maintains that the party will re-strategise and come back well-prepared for the 2020 elections.
