Why was Rawlings conspicuously missing at NDC’s final rally?

Despite the huge presence, there were people who were missing from the final rally which saw thousands of NDC supporters at the stadium.

A number of party bigwigs were expected to be present at the rally even if they were not going to address the mammoth gathering.

One of such persons was the former president Jerry John Rawlings. The last time he was seen on a campaign platform was at the campaign launch of the NDC in Cape Coast.

At that campaign launch, Rawlings warned the NDC not to be complacent ahead of the polls. He asked the party supporters to campaign on the ideologies of the NDC instead.

“By virtue of who we are, where we have come from and how we came into being, I keep saying we cannot afford to fight them on their terms. It is important that we fight them on our terms.”

“The NPP cannot be underestimated, they’ve been in existence for a long time and have been changing their names to this date, the nature of who they are, what they are, where they’ve come from is something they are happy with and they will be there for a long time."

The founder of the NDC said he will only make his comments after the elections.

“I will reserve what I will have to say after the elections to share with you how I think we can restore the kind of strength that will take us into the future.”

Has the charismatic Rawlings lost his charm to get the crowd chanting? Or has the NDC relegated him because he will make more ‘boom’ statements against them?

The General Secretary of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketiah in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM said the former president is not taking an active part in the 2016 campaign because of old age.

“We have benefited from the toil of this man so at this age he needs to rest for those he trained to do the work.”

At the final rally, the crowd cheered and responded to all the ‘tsoboi’ with claps, shouts, the elephant-like sounds from the vuvuzela among others.

The ‘tsoboi’ that received the loudest response was that of little Chelsea who called for a peaceful election.

We all know Papa J as he also referred to would have received a louder response than Chelsea. But he was absent. The question is if you started the campaign with him, why not end with him too?

There could be various reasons why he failed to show up. But here are the possible reasons Rawlings missed the final rally of the party.

1. Maybe Asiedu Nketiah is right, Rawlings could not make it due to old age.

2. Maybe he has been relegated by the current executive and members of the party

3. Rawlings may not be happy with some occurrences in the party hence his silence.

4. He may also be waiting to only talk after the elections as he said

5. Or the organisers did not invite him

Just a kind reminder to the former president, some of us will be waiting for the comments that will "restore the kind of strength that will take us into the future."
