The National Peace Council (NPC) has advised the Electoral Commission to be circumspect in how it handles issues arising out of the Supreme Court ruling asking it give the disqualified presidential nominees the opportunity to rectify anomalies on their nomination forms.

The national chairman of the National Peace Council Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante who visited the EC offices on Tuesday to assess the situation said the EC must ensure that all aggrieved parties are treated fairly.

“They [EC] have the responsibility to ensure that the ground is level. They should ensure that they do not do anything that will create tension in the nation,” Rev. Asante said.

He added: “I believe that the ruling of the Supreme Court should bring finality to the case, especially in respect to the presidential candidates who have been disqualified… I don’t think that any more impediments should be put in their way.

“The spirit of the ruling is that they should be given the opportunity to be part of the process. I would wish that the EC would do the best that they can to ensure that the spirit of the ruling is carried out.”

Rev. Asante also urged the political parties “to make sure that they do not allow emotions to override the kind of things that they do.”

“I’ll plead with them to make sure the proper documentation is done so that all of them will be there for Ghanaians to have a wider choice in terms of the person they want to be president,” he said.

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the election management body to extend the nomination period to November 8 and allow the candidates to correct their mistakes in order to contest the polls.

The court also ordered the discontinuation of the various court cases regarding the disqualification of other presidential aspirants.

The Commission has already written to all the affected presidential hopefuls, alerting them of their errors, and reminding them to as a matter of urgency correct same in view of the court ruling.

Some parties already feel that the extension period is too short and therefore feel they might not be able to make it.
