The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of favouritism.

The PPP say the EC cleared the 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) even though he did not fulfil all the requirements in his nomination forms as demanded by the EC.

Policy Adviser of the party, Kofi Asamoah Siaw made this accusation at a press conference at the party headquarters in Accra.

He said, “we watched the presentation of Nana Akufo-Addo’s form to the chairperson of the commission and he told the chair that he was not going to fill the asset declaration requirement because it was not backed by law yet in that document he had declared under oath that he had done it.”

Siaw accused Nana Addo of falsification “the statement he [Akufo-Addo] made in his nomination form is a false declaration; it is perjury if you’ve not slapped somebody you don’t go and swear an oath that you’ve done it?”

With two days to the deadline for the submission of nomination forms, the EC released a statement asking presidential and parliamentary nominees to declare their assets with the Auditor General or forfeit their candidature.

Only the Flagbearer of the PPP, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, came out publicly to confirm the declaration of his assets to the Auditor General.

Meanwhile, the NPP fiercely kicked against it, saying it was unconstitutional.

“So, the question we are asking is that why did the EC overlook this offence and pass these candidates without raising any issue? Is this not a matter of selective justice...the EC Chairperson is a lawyer and must know this. We understand that Nana Akufo-Addo did not comply with this requirement and we sight him for the false declaration but he stands qualified per the EC’s decision as a presidential candidate. This is a clear selective application of EC’s own laws,” Siaw said.

Dr Nduom is one of the thirteen presidential nominees who was disqualified by the EC for various anomalies in their nomination forms.
