Mr. George Kumi, failed NPP parliamentary aspirant

A New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant, who lost the Sunyani East constituency primary, Mr. George Kumi, has indicated to contest the 2016 general elections independent.

Mr. Kumi, a former Ghana ambassador to Nigeria and Libya secured 387 votes as against 388 by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh.

Mr Kumi addressing the press in Sunyani said his decision to contest as an independent candidate in the 2016 elections came after several pleadings on him by the party’s supporters in the constituency.

"I don’t want to betray the supporters who supported me and have been sacked from the party after the elections”, he stated.

"I know after this press conference I will be sacked from the party", Mr Kumi stated, encouraging his supporters not to be intimidated by the falsehood they would hear about him.

Mr Kumi who alleged vote rigging during the NPP primaries petitioned the Sunyani East Constituency Election Committee of the party and demanded that the Electoral Commission (EC) conduct a recount and forensic audit of the ballots.

He said, "In spite of the rigging that characterized the party’s primaries in the constituency, I was able to divide the votes equally," adding that he had a better chance of winning the seat judging from his performance in the primaries.
