Failed NPP aspirant calls for recount and forensic audit of ballot papers

A New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant, who lost the Sunyani East constituency primary held last Saturday, Mr. George Kumi, has called for a recount and forensic audit of the ballot papers.

Mr. Kumi, a former Ghana ambassador to Nigeria and Libya secured 387 votes as against 388 by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh.

In a petition signed by the aspirant, dated Sunday, June 14, 2015 to the General Secretary of the party, Accra and copied to the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander and the Sunyani East Constituency Election Committee of the party, he demanded that the Electoral Commission (EC) conduct a recount and forensic audit of the ballots.

“I wish to petition your office for a recount of ballots of the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primaries for Sunyani East Constituency which took place on Saturday, June 13, 2015”.

The petitioner called on the Electoral Commission to conduct a forensic audit of the ballots to ascertain the whereabouts of a missing ballot paper to ascertain the serial number of that particular ballot”.

Mr Kumi in his petition further requested that the ballot box containing the ballots of the just ended primaries be handed over to the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Command for safe keeping within 24 hours after the issuance of the petition.
