Police arrest 34 for harassing residents and looting shops

The 34 people arrested, according to the police, went round closing down shops and allegedly assaulted people because they were not observing the curfew.

The Police have arrested 34 people for allegedly harassing innocent citizens and looting shops at Nungua, a suburb of Accra, to force them to observe a briefed curfew imposed by the traditional authorities there.

The Ga Traditional Council imposed the curfew in agreement with the police as part of the burial preparation for the late priest of the Ga State.

A task force was then set up by the police and the traditional council to enforce strict adherence to the curfew directive.

However, some hoodlums took advantage of the situation to harass residents.

The development has angered the traditional authorities who have asked the police to deal mercilessly with anyone arrested in connection with the disrurbances.

Chief of Protocol for the office of Gborblu Wul)m), Michael Abblor, said in imposing the curfew, clinics, banks, hospitals, schools, Ghana Water and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) workers were excepted.

He stressed that nobody has authorised the looting of shops, saying "We set the ground rules together with the police."

According to him, the council anticipated "a few recalcitrant people" would disturb the peace of the area during the curfew period.

The late Numo Borketey Laweh, the Overlord of the Ga-Dangme State would be laid in state from Tuesday, February 28, to March 4.

The Numo Borketey Laweh as he was affectionately called was enstooled on May 9, 1987 and passed on, on November 24, 2015.

He ruled for nearly 29 years as the landlord of the Ga-Dangme State.
