Some kayayei in Madina market, one of the biggest markets in Accra, have expressed profound excitement after the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta announce the abolishing of levies imposed on them.

Mr Ofori-Atta made the announcement during his first budget reading in Parliament on today, March 2.

Kayayei is a local term that refers to a head porter (mostly female) found in many of Ghana’s large markets. They mostly migrate from a rural northern Ghana community to urban centres in search of work. Some are as young as 12 years-old and others are 35 years.

When Pulse.com.gh visited the Madina market, the head porters couldn’t keep their excitement to themselves; reminiscing how the tax collectors harass them on a daily basis for the collection of 50 pesewas.

Those who could not pay had their carrier pans seized and the female porters would have to pay 20 cedis to get it back.

"We are very happy because of this announcement. We are also looking forward to the free housing the government promised", one head porter said amidst excitement.
