Theophilus Allotey was the country’s last hope of sealing a place at this year’s Olympic Games in Paris but he suffered defeat to South Korea’s Inkyu Kim.

Allotey had been Ghana’s brightest spot at the qualifying tournament, having won his previous two bouts to advance to the quarterfinals.

All Ghanaian boxers fail to qualify for Olympic Games

However, that was as far as he got, as he was denied qualification to the Olympic Games after being stopped by Inkyu Kim during Sunday's fight via a 3-2 split decision.

Allotey’s loss means each of the seven boxers who represented Ghana in the qualifying tournament in Italy have all now been eliminated.

Alfred Kotey was the first to lose after he was beaten by Czech Republic’s Milos Bartl in the Men’s Light Middleweight division.

There was further misery for Team Ghana when UK-born Mark Kodjovi Ahondjo also succumbed to a disappointing defeat, while Jonathan Tetteh was also eliminated from the light heavyweight contest.

One last opportunity for Black Bombers

Last Thursday, Olympic bronze medallist Samuel Takyi suffered a disappointing loss to Japanese opponent Shion Nishiyama.

The 23-year-old was completely dominated by Nishiyama, who romped to a comfortable victory via a 5-0 unanimous decision in the Men's Light Welterweight division (63.5Kg).

This comes after all 12 boxers who represented Ghana in the Olympic Games qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal, in September 2023 were also all eliminated.

Meanwhile, Ghana's boxing team, the Black Bombers, will have one final chance to qualify for the Olympics at the qualifying tournament in Bangkok, Thailand in May.
