Michael Essien completed a club-record signing from Lyon to Michael Essien for 24.5 million pounds on 19th August 2005 which is exactly 14 years today.

The transfer fee stood for many years as the highest fee ever paid for an African player.

UEFA and Chelsea remembered this special day by tweeting a video of some of the great moments of Essien while at Chelsea.

The highlights include an iconic Premier League screamer of 30 yards against Arsenal and of course the stunner he scored against FC Barcelona in a Champions League game.

Essien’s accolades as a Chelsea player included two Premier League titles, three FA Cups as well as the UEFA Champions League.

During his stay at the club, the former Liberty Professionals midfielder made 168 appearances for the club and scoring seventeen [17] goals.
