In a 2022 interview, the Athletic Bilbao winger said he has been watching Gyan since age six and even tried to copy his style of play when he was growing up.
“When I was six years old, I loved Asamoah Gyan. He is the best striker [I have seen]. He scored a lot of goals,” the 22-year-old told 3Sports two years ago.
“I watched a lot of his matches and try to transmit his style to my football. I practised to be like him and try to score goals like him.”

Having starred in Spain's run to winning the 2024 European Championship, including scoring in the final against England, a video of his previous interview has reemerged.
Gyan, who also spotted the interview, shared it on his Instagram page, which was accompanied by silence and prayer emojis.
Nico’s senior brother Inaki, who plays for Ghana, also commented on Gyan’s post, saying: “The best.”
Meanwhile, while Nico is currently on vacation after winning the Euros, Inaki has regained fitness and joined Athletic Bilbao for pre-season ahead of the next season.
The 30-year-old was ruled out of Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR) in June.
This was after he missed the final weeks of the season through injury, with Bilbao manager Ernesto Bilbao revealing that the striker had been playing with a glass in his foot.
He, therefore, went under the knife to remove the glass, which meant he had to spend some weeks on the sidelines as a consequence.
While recuperating, Williams and his girlfriend, Patricia Morales, tied the knot in a colourful wedding ceremony at the picturesque venue Basilica of Begona in June.
