Veteran Ghanaian boxer Isaac Braimah Kamoko, popularly referred to as Bukom Banku, was in the <a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/search-results?keywords=bukom%20banku">news recently for fighting a woman at Bukom</a> last weekend.

An incident<a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/ghana-sports-boxing/boxer-bukom-banku-explains-why-he-was-exchanging-blows-with-ex-girlfriend-2024112510500056773"> Bukom Banku has denied</a>, stating that he didn’t beat the woman, who was his ex-girlfriend.&nbsp; A video shared online captured the boxer cum comedian involved in a violent altercation with the woman, but he claimed&nbsp;“I didn’t throw my hands.”

According to him, his ex-girlfriend consistently abused members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), himself included, so, he went to confront her but ended up being assaulted by the woman and her family.

But that was not the first time the former WBO African Light Heavyweight Champion has been involved in a fight or assault case with a woman.

<h2>3 times Bukom Banku has been caught for assaulting women</h2>

August 2016 – slapping and punching hairdresser

On August 11, 2016, Bukom Banku reportedly slapped a hairdresser named Martha, who resides in Chorkor in Accra, before punching her in the right rib.

Additionally, he was scheduled to respond to an accusation of damaging Martha's GH¢40 Nokia cell phone. Bukom Banku was also charged with unlawfully damaging the phone in addition to the assault allegation.

According to reports, he picked up the complainant's Nokia phone and struck it against the floor.

He was later arrested and discharged after the complainant indicated that she was no longer interested in pressing charges against him.

March 2016 – assaulting three women after allegedly being denied sex

The Accra Regional Police Command detained Bukom Banku once again in March 2016 year on charges of assaulting three women after one of them allegedly refused his request for sex.

He was subsequently granted bail to the sum of GH¢5,000 with two sureties.

March 2017 – verbally assaulting, chasing a woman

On March 4, 2017, in Mamprobi, Accra, boxer Bukom Banku verbally abused Ida, calling her a "foolish, stupid woman" and making offensive remarks about her private parts. Banku also threatened to harm her, saying, "If I get you, I will break you into pieces."

The incident occurred after Bukom Banku’s daughter, Hajia, went to Ida’s shop for money. When Ida attempted to explain the situation, Bukom Banku became furious, insulting her further. To avoid conflict, Ida left her shop, but he allegedly chased her. Fearing for her safety, Ida went to a police station. Bukom Banku was invited to the police but refused to cooperate, later being summoned to court.

The case was settled out of court through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), and the boxer was discharged.

Justice Arit Nsemoh, who presided over that case, issued a stern warning to Bukom Banku to stop beating women.

A now-viral video showed Bukom Banku, who was in a kaftan, fighting a woman clad in a pink outfit, as bystanders tried to separate the two. People watching the fight can be heard telling the former boxer to stop.

Many social media users have expressed their displeasure over the footage, calling the boxer's behaviour abusive and unacceptable.

However, according to him, he didn’t hit the woman during the violent altercation and revealed the reason why the fight ensued in the first place.

Bukom Banku alleged that the woman is fond of verbally abusing him and other members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the community.

According to the ex-boxer, she constantly insults NDC members during their campaigns in the neighbourhood.

The 29-second clip, which was shared on the X platform by EDHUB, shows Bukom Banku, dressed in a kaftan, striking the woman, who is wearing a pink outfit. As the altercation unfolds, onlookers can be heard urging the former boxer to stop. The incident was eventually broken up.

The video has sparked widespread outrage, with many social media users condemning the boxer’s actions as abusive and unacceptable. The incident has reignited calls for Bukom Banku to be held accountable for his behaviour.

It is not only morally reprehensible but also illegal for anyone, particularly a professional boxer, to engage in physical altercations outside of the ring. According to Ghana’s domestic violence laws, assaulting a person—regardless of gender—can lead to criminal charges, including assault and battery. For professional boxers, the situation is even more serious. Given their training and expertise in combat sports, they are legally held to a higher standard of conduct. A professional boxer who engages in a fight outside the ring can face harsher penalties, as their skills in physical combat are considered a dangerous advantage.

Known for his brash personality and controversial actions in the past, Bukom Banku’s latest outburst has further fuelled public debate over his conduct. Many are now demanding that he face consequences for this latest episode of aggression.

The singer and comedian declared his preference for the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer – his friend – Mahama. He suggested that when Mahama returns to the Golden Jubilee House, he will bring relief from the current economic hardships.

“I’m fighting for my party to come to power so I’ll be free. I’m campaigning for Mahama to win the 2024 election. He’s been my friend since his vice presidency. I’ve known him for 14 years now,” Banku said.

Speaking on Showbiz 360, Bukom Banku reflected on his past behavior, admitting that he used to confront and fight individuals who disrespected him in his Bukom community. However, he noted that he has since repented from such actions.

The 46-year-old comedian highlighted his adherence to Muslim traditions as a key reason for abstaining from alcohol and smoking. "In my life, I have never smoked before or drank alcohol because I am Muslim," he stated.

Bukom Banku also asserted that he has never sought spiritual support, such as juju, to achieve fame. He attributed his success solely to God's influence.

"Nobody can do juju for me in this nation. Who says they've done juju for me to support my career? Never in my life. It's God. If you go for juju and you die, your children will face the consequences, and it will affect their future. Anybody who claims to have given me juju should come out and say it. My superstar status is real," he declared.

Additionally, Bukom Banku offered advice to his son, urging him to avoid distractions from women and focus on his career.

He further advised young people to concentrate on achieving success and to avoid distractions from relationships. According to him, success will naturally attract attention from women.

"I have seven cars to drive me around Ga Mashie, but I don't have a house. I only have lands. But I use my earnings to take care of my children. Maybe he (points to his son Abu Kamoko) can build me a house, but personally I don’t own a house. I have lands in Ga Mashie and Kasoa. Bukom Banku rose to prominence in 1999 when he won a bronze medal at the <a href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/sports/13-countries-that-have-hosted-african-games-since-its-inception/pry7cfd">All-Africa Games</a> in Johannesburg, South Africa.

In a career that spanned two decades, he held the WBO Africa Light Heavyweight WBO Africa Cruiserweight titles.

He also lost just once in his boxing career – a defeat that came against Ghanaian rival Bastie Samir seven years ago.

Bukom Banku announced his retirement from the sport in November 2023, citing problems with his eye.

The Ghanaian amateur boxer was dominated by his opponent, who romped to a unanimous victory to secure a gold medal, while Abu settled for silver.

Discussing how the bout panned out in an interview with GHOne TV, Abu hilariously said his opponent chased him like a lion.

He also revealed that he was sick going into the final fight and promised to win a gold medal for Ghana next time.

“I was suffering inside the ring. I was experiencing pain all over my body because the guy was chasing me like a lion. He’s Africa’s number five so he’s good and was chasing me all over. It wasn’t small blows,” Abu said.

“After the game, I went to the anti-doping staff to ask them if they really examined the guy before the fight. I couldn’t understand why I could be punching the guy and he will still be coming for more.

“This is my first competitive fight and I got a silver so I will give thanks to God. I have promised Ghanaians a gold medal so I will work hard and deliver that promise before I move to professional. Ghanaians should forgive and believe in me.”

Abu Kamoko, the son of Bukom Banku, has given a hilarious account of his performance in the just-ended 2023 African Games.

Abu Kamoko is currently guaranteed at least a bronze medal at the Games after qualifying for the semi-finals of the 86kg cruiserweight division.

This means the young boxer has now matched the record of his father, Bukom Banku, who won a bronze medal at the 1999 African Games in South Africa.

Ahead of Abu’s semi-final bout on Thursday, his father has expressed confidence that he can go all the way to win a gold medal for Ghana.

"If in 1999 I won bronze, then my son Abu Kamoko can do more than that and win gold for Ghana,” Bukom Banku told GhOne TV, as quoted by Ghanaweb.

“Bronze is a local medal, but at my time, we had good boxers, and it was my first time going to South Africa so that put some fear in me,"

"This time, I don't fear anyone, and I have told Abu Kamoko not to fear anyone in boxing because boxing is his father's work. I pray Abu Kamoko wins gold for Ghanaians for the longevity of Kamokos.”

Meanwhile, Ghana remains sixth on the medal table despite Rose Yeboah’s gold medal in the high jump event on Tuesday.

The host nation currently boasts a total of 47 medals, which consists of 10 gold, 22 silver and 29 bronze.

The young Kamoko can, however, now surpass his father and win either a silver or gold medal if he advances to the final of the 86kg cruiserweight boxing event.

Meanwhile, 10 out of the 16 Ghanaian boxers in the African Games are in contention to win some medals in their weight categories.

Abu Kamoko, as well as Theophilus Allotey and Mohammed Aryeetey, are guaranteed bronze after reaching the semifinals of the 48kg, 51kg and 86kg categories, respectively.

Olympic bronze medallist Samuel Takyi is also one of six boxers who have qualified for the quarter-finals of their weight categories.

The others are Amadu Mohammed, Abdul Walid Omar, Joseph Commey, Henry Malm and Daniel Plange.

Ghana’s total medal count has greatly improved in the last few days after the weightlifting team won an astonishing 41 medals at the weekend.

The country is now sixth overall on the medal table with a total of 46 medals – nine gold, 22 silver and 15 bronze.

Explaining the rationale behind his decision to retire, Bukom Banku said he has been having problems with his eye.

“I’m now grown and at the same time my eye is also paining me, so I don’t want to fight again,” the boxer stated.

“I have three children and my children are also fighting boxing, so I leave everything to them. I leave my gloves to Abu Kamoko and Mustapha Kamoko to fight on.&nbsp;

“I’ve already prepared the road so they can continue my name. Where I couldn’t reach in boxing, maybe they can reach there. So officially I’ve quit boxing.”

Bukom Banku lost just once in his boxing career – a defeat that came against Bastie Samir six years ago.

In a recent interview, he revealed that he bleached his skin because he wanted to be more handsome.

The former WBO Africa Light Heavyweight champion, however, said he was advised to stop bleaching by some big men in the country.

“I wanted to be very handsome so I bleached my skin but I’ve stopped. I was advised by the big men in the building to stop bleaching. So that bleaching you will not see it again. I’ve stopped. Bleaching is not good. It can lead to all kinds of cancer. I’ve stopped,”&nbsp;he said on Accra FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo.

In 2021,&nbsp;the pugilist came under intense criticism from a section of the public after photos of his bleached skin went viral.

He, however, defended his choices, saying it was part of his brand and asked his critics to stop telling him how to live his life.

Two years on, and Bukom Banku has now admitted that bleaching his skin wasn’t right, adding that he has put a stop to it.

“I wanted to be very handsome so I bleached my skin but I’ve stopped,” he said on Accra FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo.

“I was advised by the big men in the building to stop bleaching. So that bleaching you will not see it again. I’ve stopped. Bleaching is not good. It can lead to all kinds of cancer. I’ve stopped.”

Bukom Banku has lost just once in his boxing career – a defeat that came against Bastie Samir six years ago.

The 43-year-old went on to win his first international fight after recording a knockout victory over Hungarian opponent, Ferenc Albert in 2019.

However, he hasn’t faced anyone since that time despite recently signing a lucrative contract with local promotional giant Box Office Promotions.

The Ghanaian boxer, real name, Braimah Isaac Kamoko, has sacked his three of his five wives and currently dating his cousin. Bukom Banku confirmed the reports to sit-in host of Ayekoo Ayekoo, Akua Sonto, on Accra 100.5 FM.

Asked what happened, he said “It’s a long [story]” before adding that “I’m a fine boy… women love me. If you love me, I’ll love you. Love the person who loves you, and forget your haters and enemies. Love the person who loves you, and forget your enemies. Don’t love your enemies."

Bukom Banku is not only a boxer, he also identifies as the Idris Elba of Bukom because according to him, women flock after him and droll over how fine he is.
