This vision necessitates a leader who is not only aware of the challenges faced by Africa’s youth but is also actively engaged in addressing them. While experienced figures like Kenya’s Raila Odinga are being considered, it is crucial to recognise that younger, more dynamic leaders like Tanzania’s Foreign Minister January Makamba, whose candidacy has not yet been formally confirmed but whose name is being circulated in diplomatic circles, would be far better suited for this pivotal role.
Raila Odinga, with his extensive political career, brings a wealth of experience. However, his long standing involvement in traditional political spheres does not necessarily align with the innovative and youthful perspective needed to drive the AU’s 2024 theme forward. The future of Africa rests heavily on the shoulders of its young people, who are increasingly demanding fresh, transformative leadership that resonates with their aspirations and understands their realities.
Mr. Odinga's age, currently 79, also stands in stark contrast to the median age in Kenya, which is approximately 20 years, and the median age across Africa, which is around 19 years. This significant age disparity underscores a disconnect between Odinga and the youthful demographic that constitutes the majority of the continent's population.
With Africa's youth representing the future of the continent, it is crucial for the next chair of the African Union Commission to be someone who can relate to and effectively advocate for this young generation.
Odinga’s political journey has been characterised by legacy politics and a focus on historical grievances, which, while important, do not fully address the forward-looking needs of Africa’s youth.
In contrast, January Makamba embodies the qualities needed to lead the AU into a future where youth empowerment is at the forefront. His track record in areas critical to youth development and education makes him an ideal candidate.
As Tanzania’s Foreign Minister and a former Minister of State in the Vice President's Office for Union Affairs and Environment, Makamba has demonstrated a deep commitment to sustainable development and digital innovation. His efforts to integrate technology into education and create job opportunities through digital platforms are precisely the kind of initiatives that align with the AU’s 2024 theme. These projects not only address immediate educational needs but also prepare Africa’s youth for a competitive global economy.
While the AU will introduce a new theme in 2025, the next chair must build on the momentum of the 2024 focus. The initiatives and policies started under the 2024 theme must be seen through to completion and expanded upon to create lasting impact. This requires a leader who can provide continuity, ensuring that the progress made in educating and skilling Africa’s youth is not lost but rather built upon in subsequent years.
Makamba’s youth-centric approach and his experience in spearheading educational reforms and digital advancements make him well-suited to maintain and expand the 2024 theme’s initiatives. His leadership would ensure that the AU’s focus on youth empowerment and education continues to be a priority, translating the theme from an annual focus into a long-term strategic goal.
As the African Union stands at the cusp of a significant leadership decision, it is imperative to choose a chair who can truly connect with and champion the continent’s youth. Raila Odinga’s contributions to African politics are significant, but the current needs of the AU require a leader who embodies the innovation and dynamism of Africa’s young population.
