No Food For Tamale Prisoners

Prisoners in the Tamale Central Prisons will have to go on hunger strike because of insufficient food for the inmates.

Tamale Central Prisons, the oldest prison in the Northern Region, is saddled with several challenges, making it extremely difficult for managers to cater for the upkeep of inmates.

As a result, authorities have gone begging and have subsequently been appealing to individuals and benevolent organisations to come to urgently their aid.

Authorities are particularly in dire need of basic drugs, food, toiletries and other consumables to enable them to cater for the growing number of inmates at the already congested facility.

The prison authorities revealed that government subvention is woefully inadequate to cater for the feeding of the inmates and emphasized the need for public support in feeding the over 300 inmates comprising, convicts and remand prisoners.

Superintendent S.B Khalid made the appeal on behalf of the Deputy Director of the Ghana Prison Service (GPS) in-charge of the Northern Region, Robert K. Awolugutu, when Tamnorth Company, wholesalers and distributors of Classic Beverages, donated 110 cartons of Lacaserra soft drinks and two cartons of biscuits to the prison authorities and the inmates.

Superintendent Khalid emphasized that the authorities need drugs at its infirmary to take care of inmates who fall sick before referring them to the major hospitals in the region for adequate treatment, but these basic drugs were non-existent.

He thanked Tamnorth Company for coming to their aid and appealed to other organisations to help the inmates to enable them to complete their terms successfully and reunite with their families.

The Northern Regional Distributor of Classic Beverages, Abdul Mumin Yussif, urged inmates at the prison to have faith and consider their current predicament as a corrective measure to reform them.

He appealed to them to be law abiding and not make any attempt to escape from lawful custody as it could compound their current predicament, pointing out that they could be more useful to society after their jail terms.
