In case you're behind: Gypsy's mother, Dee Dee, suffered from factitious disorder imposed on another (a.k.a. Munchausen syndrome by proxy). Throughout Gypsy's life, Dee Dee convinced her and others that Gypsy was severely ill-forcing her to take medication and undergo unnecessary medical treatments. (At one point, Gypsy even had to get all of her teeth pulled -possibly due to the fact that she was fed through a feeding tube for years, and put on medication that caused her teeth to "crumble".)
Eventually, Gypsy figured out her health issues were all a lie, and ran away with boyfriend Nick Godejohn. Gypsy reportedly went on to convince Godejohn to murder Dee Dee-and he stabbed her to death in June 2015.
Wait, so what's Gypsy Rose's boyfriend's prison sentence?
Godejohn, who is now 29 years old, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard in February 2019, according to the Springfield News-Leader . Prosecutors did not pursue the death penalty in the case. During the trial, Godejohn's defense team tried to argue that he committed the crime out of love, to save Gypsy from her mother's abuse.
During the sentencing hearing, the Springfield News-Leader reports that Godejohn told the judge, "I was blindly in love. That was always very much the case."
In comparison, Gypsy is serving a 10-year sentence for her role in the murder (she convinced Godejohn to do it, after all), and she will be eligible for parole in 2023 when she is 32 years old.
