According to Wendy Shay, "celebrity is an English word which means a famous person especially in sports and entertainment ".
That said, Wendy Shay believes Ghanaians do not understand the correct definition of "celebrity"; hence, they have coined their definition to suit everyone.
She says Ghanaians define it as somebody who is famous.
In a tweet on November 15, Wendy Shay wrote: "Celebrity is an English word, it means a famous person especially in entertainment or sports etc., but it seems some Ghanaians have their own definition for the word celebrity, somebody being famous(celebrity) to Dey pain u people ooh Dabi smh. Ghana wake up!".
Her tweet comes following Commissioner of Police Kofi Boakye's recent definition of a 'celebrity' in Ghana.
Speaking at a meeting between the Ghana police and creative people held last week, COP Kofi Boakye expressed worry over demands some of the celebrities made at (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare.
The outspoken senior police noted a need to clarify who a celebrity is and who deserves that title.
"Who is a celebrity? What is the operational definition of the word celebrity? I think we should get that because I am confused. We are confused. Is it that when you appear in one film, or you do one song, you qualify to be called a celebrity or what? And you see, because we are confused, we do not know what you want," he said.
Most Ghanaians have embraced his definition, but it seems Wendy Shay and Guru aren't in for that.
