Presidential Advisor on Governance and Corruption Daniel Batidam, has kicked against plans by the incoming Nana Akufo-Addo led government to establish the office of an independent prosecutor to fight corruption.

According to him, "it’s not the way to go in setting up a special prosecutor, whoever does any kind of work under the present constitution that we have, it will end on the desk of the attorney general."

Nana Addo said, "We have decided that as much as possible we want to take the politics out of it."

He has indicated one of his priorities would be to establish the Office of a Special Prosecutor to deal with corruption.

The move, according to him was intended to separate politics from criminal investigations.

But Mr. Batidam in an interview with Accra-based Starr FM said, "Unless you amend the constitution to take the powers that are granted the attorney general, it will be an exercise in futility."

Meanwhile, the 2016 presidential candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom says the establishment of the Office of a Special Prosecutor as part of measures to deal with corruption is not important.

According to him, Nana Addo's initial priority to deal with corruption is not necessary to fight corruption in the country.
