A 40-year-old woman was on Thursday morning found dead in a river at Assin Akropong in the Assin North Municipality of Central Region.
Police investigations revealed that the woman, Akua Kumiwaa was a known epileptic who lived with her family close to the river.
The Assin Fosu District Commander Superintendent Magnus Reindorf Sam told Accra-based Kasapa FM that the family of the deceased announced on an information centre Thursday morning about the disappearance of the woman and asked residents in the town to help in searching for her.
The Police was later informed about the incident.
A resident who was on the way to fetch water from the river, however, found the body of the deceased floating and subsequently alerted the family.
Superintendent Reindorf Sam said that after preliminary investigations, the police realised that the woman went to fetch water early in the morning but was unfortunately caught by epilepsy, leading to her drowning.
He said that the police will, however, not rule out any foul play and will, therefore, wait for the autopsy report to conduct further investigations.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Francis Xavier Hospital at Assin Fosu for the autopsy.
Meanwhile, residents are said to be living in fear particularly because the woman’s death happens to be the second within two weeks.
It will be recalled that a mud wall weakened by rains last Sunday collapsed on two members of a family.
The deceased were 86-year-old Yaa Nimo who died instantly while 78-year old Yaa Antaa died later.
Reports say the incident occurred when the two were vigorously pouring fufu after returning from church on Sunday.
