Alex Iwobi beats Ghana duo to CAF award

The Nigerian midfierlder, Alex Iwobi beat off competition from Sandra Owusu Ansah and Eric Ayiah to win the CAF Young Player of the Year award.

Sandra Owusu Ansah of Black Maidens and Black Princesses fame and her compatriot Eric Ayiah, the skipper of the Black Starlets missed out on the African Young Footballer of the Year award, as Alex Iwobi won the gong.

Sandra Owusu Ansah represented Ghana in two different World Cups- FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup and the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in 2016, emerging as the brightest spot in both the Black Maidens and the Black Princesses.

Whereas Eric Ayiah led the Black Starlets to book a place in the Africa U-17 Nations Cup

However, the enviable feat chalked by the Ghana duo couldn't match Alex Iwobi, 20, who was handed the opportunity to enjoy consistent football at Arsenal this season, having been core to the scheme of things of the Gunners.

Alex Iwobi is the nephew of the legendary Jay Jay Okocha.

Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester Ciity was also among the five youngsters who were short-listed for the award.
