Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has given approval for an 18 percent increase in the minimum wage for the state's teaching worksforce.

Dickson who is bidding for a second term in office disclosed the increase when he received official of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Yenagoa.

"I hereby approve the payment of your 18 percent minimum wage. Your role is invaluable," Dickson said.

"I am equally ready to improve on it as our finances improve."

He also said the government is set to commission the state's teachers training institute.

"In the next two weeks, we will commission the teachers training institute one of the best in the region."

The governor however urged teachers to be patient with the government in the face of dwindling eoconomic fortunes.

"Our revenue profile is no longer what it used to be yet we have endeavored to pay salaries."

Dickson, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will be contesting the December 5th gubernatorial polls against a two-time governor ofthe state, Chief Timipre Sylva.

Sylva, a former PDP member, is running on the platform of the All Progressives Party Congress (APC).

A revolutionary idea is helping students of Suubi Secondary and Vocational College in Lubanda, Lwengo District of Uganda, contribute to the payment of their own school fees by bringing five eggs a day to school.

According to a report by The Monitor (Uganda), the school gives each student five Kuroiler egg-laying chicken to rear in their various homes.

The school then buys each of the eggs at Shs250 each (approximately N13), thereby helping to offset their school fees.

One of the students benefitting from the initiative, 14-year-old Form One student, Vincent Luwaga, said the chickens are given to them as loans.

"It is an idea that was introduced by the school director, David Ssemwogerere," Luwaga said.

"We keep five Kuroiler hens and we bring an average of five eggs daily to the school administration as payment for school fees."

He said the parents were fully involved in the arrangement.

"The school administration visited our homes and involved our parents in the idea.

"An expert in poultry keeping came to the school and taught us the basic skills of looking after the chicken.

"They graze freely around the home like local chicken.

"We were told to supplement their feeding with maize bran and layers' marsh.

"They were quite mature and within month, they began to lay eggs."

Ssemwogerere said the five hens are valued at Shs50,000 but each student has to pay back a total of Shs60,000, with the Shs10,000 meant for further loans.

"The loan is payable within one year," he explained.

"We intend to get an incubator so that we can produce the chicks at the school.

"We want the students to know that they don't have to get free things.

"It's a chance for them to learn about loans and servicing them

The school bursar and project officer, Shanita Namaganda, said fees per term is Shs140,000.

"Poultry keeping makes it easier for them to meet their scholastic needs," Namaganda explained.

"Kuroiler hens will normally scratch the ground for insects and as long as they have water to drink they will keep laying the eggs."

One Ugandan Shilling equals 0.054 Naira.

Egypt has offered 16 Capacity Building Scholarships financed by the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD) to Malawi.

The Egyptian Ambassador to the country, Maher El-Adawy, presented the EAPD scholarships at a handover ceremony in Lilongwe.

"The aim of the scholarships is to help both our countries develop technologically, network and exposure," the Ambassador said.

"This technical know-how will help our countries move with technology as the world continues to grow."

El-Adawy said his office will continue to work with the country and give Malawians opportunities to study in Egypt.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Malawian Principal Secretary for Human Resources, Blessings Chilabade, said the scholarships mean a lot to his country.

"These scholarships mean so much to the Malawi nation because we will have expertise in the areas where we have skills shortage," he said.

"It is better to teach someone how to fish instead of actually handing them the fish itself."

Student Pulse gathered that Egypt has so far awarded 114 scholarships to scholars from the southeastern African nation.

A lecturer at the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, reportedly put his hands into the underwear of a female final year student of the institution who was cheating in an examination at the weekend.

gathered from a Leadership report that the incident happened last Friday when students of the institution’s department of Library and Information Science were writing an examination for a course called ‘Entrepreneurship and Information Services’.

The lecturer, identified as Sylvester Okiemute, had found the student, identified only as Oghenero, using cheating and forcefully removed the incriminating material from her underwear.

It was reported that the Oghenero had refused to hand over the material as requested by the lecturer, who reacted by dipping his hands into her underwear inside the examination hall after a brief shouting match.

In some countries, Okiemute's intervention may be seen as a case of sexual assault.

Reports say there have been several cases of examination malpractices since the institution began its examinations.
