On Pulse Ghana’s WhatsApp channel, 8,811 votes were cast, with 6,338 (71%) voting NO to the idea of sacking Dr. Dampare and 2,473 (29%) voting YES. A similar poll on the Pulse Ghana Instagram page received 1,238 votes, where 781 voters (63%) voted NO and 458 (37%) voted YES. On X, 1,386 votes were recorded—721 (52%) voted NO, while 665 (48%) voted YES. Overall, across these three platforms, a total of 11,435 votes were tallied, with 7,840 (69%) opposing the removal of Dr. Dampare and 3,596 (31%) supporting it.

Sam Okudzeto defends IGP Dampare, says he's levelheaded, strict and professional

The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for the thugs involved in the chaos that erupted during the <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/heavy-blows-fly-as-thugs-disrupt-ashanti-region-council-of-state-election-2025021113350524275">Council of State election</a> in the Ashanti Region, after heavily built thugs, known locally as “machomen,” invaded the premises and disrupted the process.

Reports indicate that unidentified men stormed the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) just as voting had concluded peacefully and the counting was underway. The assailants destroyed ballot papers and engaged in physical altercations with election officials.

The attack reportedly left several people injured, including journalists, forcing the process to be halted while security personnel attempted to restore order.

The law enforcement agency said in a statement on Tuesday, 11 February:

The Ashanti Region’s Council of State election is highly competitive, with 86 delegates expected to cast their votes for one of 12 candidates. The contenders include Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo, Rose Hamilton, Frederick Adjei, Nana Yaw Akuoko, Alexander Nti, Nana Gyedu Kumanin IV and Nana Kusi Ampofoh II. Others in the race are Angel Yirenkyi, Nana Foriwaa Adwoa, Daniel Anarfi Yeboah, Bismark Adjei and Yaw Owusu Obimpe.

Earlier in the day, minor tensions were also recorded in the Greater Accra Region, where police blocked one of the aspirants, Musah Ziyad, from entering the polling room with some individuals. However, calm was later restored, allowing the election to proceed smoothly.

Police launch manhunt for thugs who disrupted Ashanti Region Council of State election

The Kumasi High Court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by 40 police officers against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, over what they claimed was an unfair refusal to promote them within the Ghana Police Service.

The officers, all Chief Inspectors, initiated legal action on 18 September 2023, arguing that they had been unfairly excluded from a special amnesty programme, which facilitated the promotion of officers who had obtained degrees before 2020.

Despite serving for 25 to 30 years, they alleged that their junior colleagues had benefitted from the amnesty, while they were denied entry into the Police Academy, a prerequisite for promotion to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

In their suit, the officers sought a court order compelling the IGP to grant them promotions, permit them direct entry into the Police Academy, and compensate them for income lost due to the denial of career advancement.

However, the court ruled against them, stating that legal principles—not sympathy or emotions—govern its decisions. The judgment emphasised that merely attaining a higher academic qualification does not automatically entitle an officer to promotion.

The court further explained that entry into the Police Academy is strictly based on competitive examination or special recommendation, in accordance with the Police Service Regulations.

Concluding its ruling, the court held that the plaintiffs had failed to substantiate their claims on the balance of probabilities, thereby rejecting their demands.

High Court dismisses another promotion suit against IGP

The Ghana Police Service has arrested three individuals in connection with violent disturbances during a football match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC on 2nd February 2025 at Nsoatre in the Bono Region. The chaos led to the tragic death of one person.

In a statement on Monday, 3rd February, the police identified the suspects as Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Agyemang Duah Owusu, and Kyeremeh Joseph.

The law enforcement agency confirmed.

<blockquote>All three suspects are currently in Police custody assisting the investigation.</blockquote>

Laws regarding prostitution in Australia vary by state and territory. In New South Wales, sex work is almost entirely decriminalised. In Victoria, Queensland, and Tasmania, prostitution is legal and regulated, meaning brothels and independent workers must follow specific laws. However, in Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory, <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/world/prostitution-in-post-lockdown-greece-is-russian-roulette-2024081020002944993">independent sex work is allowed</a>, but brothels and third-party management (pimping) remain illegal.

New Zealand has one of the most progressive legal frameworks for sex work. However, in the countries listed above, legal frameworks aim to reduce harm, prevent human trafficking, and provide legal protections for sex workers. While policies differ in their specifics, the overarching goal is to create safer environments for those involved in the industry.

When questioned about the contents of the bag, Ajayi denied any wrongdoing and threw it into the river, further arousing suspicion.Shortly after, two motorcyclists arrived at the church. A private businessman Kojo Okyere has petitioned the Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) to terminate the appointment of retired Police Officer Benjamin Agordzor as a lecturer of the University over his record of “misconduct” and corresponding sanctions while in the Police&nbsp; Service as contained in an RTI request.

According to the businessman, the record of the maverick retired Police Officer while in active service is unbefitting of the status of a lecturer of a&nbsp; reputable institution such as the UPSA.&nbsp; “For a person lawfully convicted on 6 counts of misconduct to be a leadership lecturer at UPSA leaves much to be desired about the characters being employed and given leadership roles to mentor the next generation”According to the records as contained in the Right To Information request, ACP (retired) Agordzo was found guilty and sanctioned for six counts of misconduct contrary to section 17 (K) of the Police Service Act 1970 (ACT 350).&nbsp;“Types of Offence committed if any? - Six counts of Misconduct contrary to section 17 (k) of the Police Service Act. 1970 (ACT350).&nbsp;“Any internal adjudication processes he was put through, if any? - Yes, Service Enquiry.“Any convictions? - Yes“Any punishments he suffered? - Yes. He was removed from the Service in August, 2007, upon appeal, the Police council on 24th mARCH 2009 reduced his punishment. Following the recent alarming public commentary of retired Police Officer Dr Benjamin Agordzo inciting personnel of the Ghana Police Service against the respected Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, I have learnt with great shock, that he is a lecturer of your noble institition which has achieved the enviable accolade of training individuals of exceptional social and corporate character.As a concerned Ghanaian, having been disturbed by his comments as was broadcast by local television station TV3 and subsequently reported by many other news websites, I took the liberty to research more on him and why a retired Police Officer will incite insurrection in a hierarchical institution such as the Police Service considering the implication of such an action for national security and stability of the country.&nbsp;Among other things Dr Agordzo is captured on video saying among other destabilizing comments “Some police officers will mobilize and drive him [the IGP] out of office, mark my words”. He continues “I am telling you that Police personnel will lock his door”. The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, John Dumelo, has shared his views on the use of sirens for parliamentary duties, stating that he does not consider them essential.

While acknowledging that sirens can make transportation more convenient, Dumelo asserted that they are unnecessary for him to carry out his role as an MP.

His remarks come amid ongoing discussions among MPs regarding the use of sirens. Dumelo noted that while some of his colleagues support the practice, he personally disagrees.

Addressing a recent comment by Kwame Obeng Asare, popularly known as A Plus, who expressed a changed perspective on the necessity of sirens for MPs, Dumelo said:

Dumelo’s comments come in the wake of remarks by Kwame Asare Obeng, known as A Plus, the newly elected MP for Gomoa Central, who has recently shifted his stance on the use of sirens.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, A Plus recounted his experiences in office, which he said have reshaped his initial opposition to the practice.

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that calm has been restored in Ejura, in the Ashanti Region, following a <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/local/ejura-angry-youth-invade-police-station-free-suspects-and-set-building-ablaze-2025011113180353374">violent mob attack on the Ejura Police Station</a> on Saturday, 11th January 2025.

According to an official statement by the police, the chaos began after the arrest of a suspect accused of stealing on the evening of Friday, 10th January 2025. The suspect, who was detained in custody, later complained of illness at about 2:20 am and was promptly taken to the Ejura Government Hospital for treatment.

<blockquote>Unfortunately, he passed away this morning while receiving medical attention. While arrangements were being made to convey the body to the morgue for preservation and autopsy, some members of the Ejura community attacked the Police Station, set it ablaze, and a section of the mob followed to where the body was and forcibly took it away.</blockquote>

In a shocking development, the angry youth invaded the police station, reportedly pelting stones at security officers to overpower them. The mob gained access to the facility, freed suspects held in remand, and set fire to the station and vehicles parked on the premises. Videos circulating on social media depict the chaotic scene, with thick black smoke billowing from the burning structure.

The Ghana National Fire Service was quickly deployed to extinguish the flames, while police engaged opinion leaders in the community to de-escalate tensions.

<blockquote>The Police, through engagement with opinion leaders and de-escalation efforts, restored calm, and there have been no casualties. The military later joined in to support the Police to maintain law and order.</blockquote>

This incident has drawn comparisons to a similar unrest that occurred on 29th June 2021 in the Ejura/Sekyedumase District, where agitated youth clashed with security forces during protests demanding justice for the murder of Ibrahim Mohammed, popularly known as Macho Kaaka. Kaaka, a social media activist and member of the FixTheCountry movement, was fatally attacked by unknown assailants. The resulting protests led to the deaths of two protesters, Abdul Nasir Yussif and Muntala Mohammed, while four others sustained severe gunshot injuries.

Calm has been restored in Ejura, with the military assisting local police to ensure law and order. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to maintaining peace and order in the community.
