Universities in the United states are reportedly looking to admit more students from the  sub-Saharan Africa.

According to VOA, there were about 1 million international students studying at U.S. colleges and universities during the 2014 to 2015 academic year. Fewer than 3 percent of those international students came from sub-Saharan Africa.

The US government want to seek solutions to the challenges of <a href="http://pulse.ng/student/rivers-scholarships-wike-spends-n1-4-bn-on-students-studying-abroad-in-4-months-id4209756.html" id="1a3af0bf-b724-5086-876f-a60b9ef6307e">studying in their country.</a>

US Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Analysis, Marcus Jadotte, is reportedly leading the first educational trade mission to Africa this week.

“They [African students] should consider studying in the U.S because of the innovative approach to education that we take in the United States, because international businesses are looking for the best-qualified, best prepared prospective employees and we certainly believe that it enriches education back home in the U.S.," Jadotte said.

He also said he will be traveling with representatives of 25 U.S. colleges and universities with the aim of building relationships with African universities.

"Many of the universities who have traveled with us on this mission are including scholarships as a part of the conversation with students here," Jadotte explained.

The delegation's first fair was in South Africa. Jadotte spoke about the academic support services and technology offered by America’s world-class universities. His message attracted a long line of South African high school students.

Jadotte says it is not just the African students who benefit from studying in the United States. The American host institutions also benefit from the increased diversity. He says Africa offers “a number of opportunities for U.S. institutions seeking to globalize their campuses."

From South Africa, the delegation will head to Ivory Coast and Ghana.

The United Nation's children's agency has reported that the Boko Haram insurgency has resulted in one million children being out of school.

Vanguard reports that this increases the risk that  a lack of education will fuel further radicalism in and around Nigeria.

The UN report has shown that over 2,000 schools are closed across Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger, while hundreds of others have been attacked, looted, or set on fire by Boko Haram jihadists in their quest to create an independent Islamic state.

The Boko Haram group, so far, has target schools, students and teachers.

“It fulfils their initial mandate, which is to topple Nigeria’s secular government and the Western tenants which underpinned that governance structure,” said Ryan Cummings, security analyst at Red24, a risk consultancy firm.

Leadership reports that the group is demanding that WAEC release the names. It was previously reported that the exam body sanctioned examination administrators who aided and abetted malpractices between May 2013 and December 2014.

The group filed the suit with registration number FHC/ABJ/CS/487/2015 through its lawyer, Mr Jeremiah Akahazemea, demanding for the names of the invigilators, supervisors and the students for prosecution.

Akahazemea asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to compel WAEC to release this information as it would assist the group in achieving its objectives.

The lawyer said that non-disclosure of the culprits made it impossible for education stakeholders, institutions and the public to carry out their civic duties.

Specifically, the group asked the court to compel WAEC to produce its officials that supervised the May/June 2013, May/June 2014 and Nov/Dec 2014 WAEC examinations.

It said this was in line with the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.

The Exam Ethics Marshals International is reportedly suing the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for not divulging the names of officials aiding and abetting examination malpractice.

Your Teacher: Arrange a meeting by email or after a seminar and be prompt. Osho Samuel, a graduate student of mechanical engineering in the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, confirmed the development to TheCable, saying the students have lost all hope.

“This is a national disgrace, considering the fact that these students are here to learn, they’ve lost all hope and I believe strongly that the government can respond and pay their bills,” he said.

“This is a critical situation for the students, they are actually preparing for their exams, they should be writing their exams in the next two weeks.

“And all what they get to think about is the fact that they’ve not been able to pay their fees, the fact that they are on the brink of being deported from Canada not for committing any crime but just coming to study.”

It has earlier been reported by a Canadian media outfit that 250 Nigerian students are studying at 14 Canadian universities on a scholarship from the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA).

One of the recipient of this scholarship, Gift Amadi relayed his experience, revealing that RSSDA sponsored them to the universities and promised not only to pay their tuition but also provide them with N217,800 ($1,100) monthly income for their rent and feeding.

Amadi said the tuition had not been paid, while their monthly stipend had not come in 11 months, adding that the school has given them 30 days to pay up or drop out.

“It’s not just a delay; it’s more like they don’t care. It’s not of value to them. Right now I’m taking classes and I’m thinking of feeding,” he said.

“I have to take a loan from friends in church. They were able to help me generate some money that I used to pay. If not, I wouldn’t have been able to start classes.

“The school is saying you have just about 30 days left to pay what’s left for this term. If not, I won’t be able to register for the winter term.”

Leah Janzen, the university’s vice-president of outreach and engagement, said the students have been in a very difficult situation, but the school has no assurance that RSSDA would pay up.

"I know some of them have accessed our student food bank, it’s a very difficult situation. We remain in contact with this organisation (RSSDA), and they’re asking us to be patient, but at this point, we’re not sure what to expect from them with regards to those arrears,” he said.

“Our policy is you can’t go into a third term having not been able to pay for the previous two terms in their entirety. So, we don’t want to get to that position with these students.”

TheCable has also reported that the RSSDA is owing N500 million ($2.5 million) to universities in Canada.

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State, have shut down activities indefinitely following the students' protest regarding the terrible state of the school hostels.

The management reportedly directed the students to go on a mid-semester break.

According to reports by Premium Times, the school’s Public Relations Officer, Olanrewaju Abiodun did not give reasons for this break.

“The senate has met and has decided that all students should go home for a mid-semester break,” he said.

“All students are expected to vacate their hostels with immediate effect; parents are advised to order their students home.”

The university's student union government has, however, directed students not to obey the management and that they should refuse to take the break that was ordered.

It held that the mid-semester break was a ploy by management to achieve “something mischievous.”

“We will not go home, we will remain on campus and watch things happen, we are ready for showdown,” a spokesperson of the union said.

It was also reported that the students have, on countless occasions, complained about the poor state of hostels in the institution, a complaint which has, so far, been ignored by the school authorities.

The students resorted to protest which shut down academic activities since Friday.

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible makes violent revolution inevitable …JF Kennedy,” a statement by the SUG President, Omotayo Akande, read.

“History will be made again as we prepare our intellectual arsenal and Aluta weaponry and proceed to the barricades.

“The congress of Great Ife Students on Friday 27th November 2015 unanimously expressed their animosity to the obnoxious state of our welfare, dilapidated hostel and among other administrative misdemeanor.

“The union has exhausted the tool of diplomacy without getting reasonable concession on how our welfare condition will be improved. The management in their Machiavellian tactic immediately restore the light after the congress.

“Why wasn’t it restored when our students were subjected to perpetual darkness for days? We are not carried away with the euphoria of the temporary supply of light and water.

“Our demands are more than just light and water as the horrendous living condition of our hostels require rapt attention.”

Mr. Abiodun in his reaction explained that the federal government should be blamed for the dilapidated hostels and mentioned that students often misuse hostel facilities.

“In a situations where students misuse hostel facilities, it is beyond our control,” he said.

The students protested the terrible state of hostels in the University.

Students fight back against management's decision to shut down school

A mock anti-terror drill in Strathmore University, Nairobi in Kenya has led to the death of one and 20 other caualties.

The students began to panic when blasts and shooting invaded the air. The blasts later proved to be nothing more than anti-terror drills which caught the oblivious staff and students by surprise. They all rushed to the exit to escape and the stampede led to the death of one staff member.

“We confirm that we have one fatality, this evening. One staff member by name , 33, has died from severe head injuries,”  the university’s Director of Communication, Betty Ngala, said in a statement.

Reports of gunfire at the university spread on social media before the authorities were able to confirm the incident was a test.

More than 20 students were wounded in the stampede, due to some of them attempting to jump off upper floors.

“Most of those we received had fractures while some sustained head and chest injuries,” said Dr. Evans Mwenda of Nairobi West Hospital.

The chaos started at around midday local time, and witness reports of gunfire on the campus even went out on international newswires.

"It was a mock exercise," Japheth Koome, the police commander in the capital told Reuters later. "We wanted to check on alertness of emergency services."

The staff and students have every reason to panic, due to the fact that, in April, this year, al-Shabaab militants stormed a campus at Garissa University College in the east of the country, near the border with Somalia.

Seven pupils lost their lives, while 21 others sustained burn injuries when a fire broke out at Government Girls’ Secondary School, Jogana in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The tragic incident occurred when one of the school's hostels went up in flames.

Punch reported that the fire outbreak occurred around 8pm on Sunday and casualties from the fire have now been taken to hospitals for treatment.

The incident was confirmed by Deputy Governor of Kano State, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, who also visited the scene of the fire.

He sympathised with the families of the victims and promised that the government would offset the medical bills incurred by the injured.

Abubakar directed that the school should be closed immediately to assuage the trauma caused by the disaster and to honour the deceased.

He said to journalists, “Seven pupils were lost to the fire incident, while 25 others suffered varying degree of injuries. A technical committee will be set up soon to identify the immediate and remote causes of the fire, as well as advise the government on the best modality to repair the hostel. The school should be closed immediately to enable the students and the parents to manage the trauma of this tragic incident.”

The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained.

The University social scene is often associated with temporary flings, surface relationship and fun parties. It does not usually encourage having a relationship with depth, but this does not mean it is not possible. 2. Trust each other: As mentioned above, the university scene is really not the best for a budding relationship. If you want a reason to break up with your partner, you will find one, especially since you are surrounded with young, single, and eager other youths. But you need to remember to cherish what you have with your partner while also trusting that they will do the same. Trust that they will remain loyal to you, because as soon as you begin to have a seed of doubt, the University scene will do a lot to germinate that seed.

3. Bring your partner in: If you and your partner are in different departments, or faculties, for example, give him/her an idea of what your course is like. Make sure you discuss the educational aspects of your life. Share if you have challenges, or any new things you are learning. This will make your partner feel like they matter and will give them a chance to encourage you through whatever school issues you might be facing.

4. Be forgiving: University can be hectic and there might be times where your partner will not be able to show up for you, especially during exams, projects, etc. You need to be forgiving and understanding during these times and try to encourage your partner.

5. Keep your individuality: Just because you are afraid to kill your relationship, do not become one those people that unnecessarily cling to their partners. For most people, University is a time for finding yourself and figuring out where your future is headed. Carve out alone time for yourself too to make these important decisions. There will be no point to your relationship, if, when you graduate, you have no life path to follow.

6. It is temporary: Your university journey is only a temporary phase in your relationship. Remember this when school life gets so hectic that it starts to negatively affect your relationship. Comfort yourself with the belief this will all be over soon and you can both move on to the next adventure in your lives.

The group, named Talitha Kum has about 1,1000 nuns. They launched in 2004.

"I'm not trying to be sensational but I'm trying to underscore the fact this is a world that has lost innocence ... where dark forces are active," said John Studzinski, an investment banker and chairman of Talitha Kum.

The group have previously dressed as prostitutes so they can infiltrate brothels.

"These sisters do not trust anyone. They do not trust governments, they do not trust corporations, and they don't trust the local police. In some cases they cannot trust male clergy," Studzinski said.

"They work in brothels. No one knows they are there."

The charity said that about 73 million people are trafficked around the world.  Studzinski said one woman was locked up for a week without food when she refused to have sex with 12 clients a day.

In another case, another woman was forced to have sex with a group of 10 men at one time.

A professor in South Korea has been sentenced to 12 years in jail for assaulting a student.

The South Korean court sentenced the man, whose name was given as Jang, after it was revealed that he forced a student to eat human faeces and drink urine during a two-year period of physical and psychological assault.

The 52-year-old professor was arrested in July after his victim - a design student now aged 29 - attempted to commit suicide to escape his ordeal.

Jang, along with other former students, had also assaulted the victim with a baseball bat and other weapons.

The victim also had a plastic bag forced over his face and filled with pepper spray, after which he was fed human excrement.

He told police he had tolerated the abuse in the hope that Jang might help him find a full-time post as a college professor.

"The accused trampled upon his victim's human dignity," the court said.

The three students who had aided Jang were sentenced to between three and six years in prison.

The professor will be in jail for 12 years.

Lecturer jailed for making student eat feaces

The students have accused the institution, which was the intellectual home of Afrikaners during apartheid, of remaining racist 21 years after the first democratic elections brought liberation icon Nelson Mandela to power.

They protested the fact that Afrikaans was the language of oppression and its use as the teaching medium disadvantaged blacks.

“Since English is the common language in South Africa, all learning at Stellenbosch University will be facilitated in English,” the rector’s management team said in a statement."

This is not to say that the students want the discontinuation of the teaching of Afrikaans in the school. According to school management, the institution “remains committed to the further development of Afrikaans” as an academic language.

“The radical change from (using) Afrikaans as the primary tool for oppression and exclusion, to adopting a language shared by all as the official language, is a significant victory in this struggle for access to education,” the movement said in a statement.

“We remember those who died for this to become possible in the long years of struggle against apartheid. In particular we remember the students of 1976.”

In that year, black high school pupils in Soweto rebelled against attempts to introduce Afrikaans as the medium of instruction, an uprising seen as a major turning point in the fight against apartheid.

The institution holds an annual event which is tagged the "Harvard Sex Week." It is organised by the Sexual Health Education &amp; Advocacy throughout Harvard College (SHEATH). Suspected cultists have reportedly murdered a secondary school leaver in Okwe Quarters, Asaba, Delta state.

Reports have it that 20-year-old Isichei Paul was murdered by said cultists who were on a rampage in the area. It was gathered that the cultists were having a misunderstanding, which quickly escalated, causing one of them to shoot Paul in close range.

Sources also disclosed that Paul was held hostage by the cultists after being invited over via a telephone call. During the altercation, the cultists allegedly attacked the victim, inflicting deep cuts on him before shooting him.

Delta state acting Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Charles Muka had this to say on the incident;

"Residents, who were interviewed, said they heard sound of gunshot, which made them scamper to safety. The police is however on top of the situation and we shall uncover the group of the suspects and bring them to book.”

A pastor in Colorado, USA, has expressed his disgust and distaste of homosexuals and everything promoting what he referred to as the 'Satanic propganda.'

Pastor Kevin Swanson, during his speech at the "National Religious Liberties Conference," says he would rather spread cow manure over his body than watch his son marry another man;

"There are families, we're talking Christian families, pastors' families, elders' families from good, godly churches, whose sons are rebelling, hanging out with homosexuals and getting married and the parents are invited. What would you do if that was the case? Here is what I would do: sackcloth and ashes at the entrance to the church and I'd sit in cow manure and I'd spread it all over my body. That is what I would do and I'm not kidding, I'm not laughing."

His rant did not end there. He also had some issues with children who support what he describes as "Satanic, pro-homosexual propaganda like "Harry Potter";

"America, repent of Harry Potter. Repent that Dumbledore emerged as a homosexual mentor for Harry Potter.” He then advises the parents of said children, "For tens of millions of parents it would be better that a millstone be hung around their neck and they be drowned at the bottom of the sea.”

As expected, Americans were enraged at his message, with some of them making a mockery of the pastor. One Youtube user commented;

"If God will judge America for Harry Potter, but not Twilight, then He is not worthy of worship."

Swanson, after this message, did add that he will give the homosexual population some time to repent before using the death penalty against them.
