While Africa is often associated with instability, the most dangerous country in this year’s ranking does not come from the continent—a surprising revelation for many.

The <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/business/international/10-most-peaceful-african-countries-in-2023-2024072410523892821">Global Peace Index</a> provides the most comprehensive analysis of peace trends worldwide, covering 99.7% of the world’s population. It evaluates 163 independent states and territories using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources.

The index measures peace across three main areas: ongoing domestic and international conflicts, societal safety and security, and levels of militarization.

The 2024 edition of the GPI highlights stark contrasts in global peace. At the top of the list, <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/sports/football/germany-cruise-past-iceland-after-diy-human-rights-protest-2024081213170804757">Iceland remains</a> the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. It is joined by Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, and Singapore, all of which continue to enjoy stability and low crime rates.

However, at the other end of the spectrum, certain nations remain mired in violence, war, and lawlessness, making them the least peaceful places on Earth.

As we explore the top 10 least peaceful countries, we will examine the key factors fueling their instability and the broader impact on global security.

More than 150 residents of <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/breaking-news-dead-body-found-in-uncompleted-building-in-kasoa-2025013012482101771">Kasoa Kumbe</a>, a suburb of Opeikuma in the <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/politics/kasoa-van-damme-hawa-koomson-knocked-out-by-naa-koryoo-in-awutu-senya-east-2024120819470266577">Awutu Senya East </a>Municipality of the Central Region, have clashed with police officers and individuals believed to be landguards during a <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/world/an-eviction-notice-chaos-after-colleges-tell-students-to-stay-away-2024080916261185272">forced eviction</a>.

Reports indicate that the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, 21st February, escalated when residents confronted officers attempting to forcibly remove them from their homes amid an ongoing land dispute.

The affected residents were left stranded after officers from the Central East Regional Police Command reportedly evicted them, citing a court ruling in favour of Kwame Baafi, who claims ownership of over 10 acres of land.

However, the residents insist they received no prior notice before the eviction.

In an attempt to resist the eviction, residents confronted the police and nearly 100 landguards, leading to chaos as homes were locked up.

One affected resident expressed frustration:

<blockquote>I was told that Mr Baafi had sent people to evict us from our homes, and true to this, the Ghana Police Service, Kasoa Division, has taken the law into their own hands and recruited landguards to evict us over a court case we know nothing about.</blockquote>

Another distressed resident recounted her ordeal:

The Chief of Gomoa Kumbe, Nana Okoboban Kwao II, expressed shock at the police’s involvement in the eviction, questioning the legitimacy of the operation. He maintained that the appeals court had ruled in the traditional council’s favour.

Kasoa: Over 150 residents clash with landguards, Police during forced eviction

<a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/local/afoko-bail-court-dismisses-a-gs-application-2024080810520774022">Gregory Afoko</a>, accused of murdering former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama, has been granted bail by an <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/local/high-court-rescinds-bail-for-murder-suspect-gregory-afoko-2024080705345627443">Accra High Court</a> after spending nearly a decade in remand.

The court set bail at GHS 500,000, requiring two sureties who must justify their assets with landed property. Additionally, Afoko must report to the Regional Crime Officer in Accra or the Director-General of the CID every two weeks until a final verdict is reached.

This decision follows a third bail application filed by Afoko’s legal team on 17th February, which was heard by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons.

In April 2024, a seven-member jury presided over by Justice Merley Afua Wood, a Justice of the Court of Appeal sitting as an additional High Court judge, unanimously found Asabke Alangdi guilty of conspiring with Gregory Afoko to murder Mahama in 2015. However, the jury delivered a 4-3 verdict of ‘not guilty’ on Afoko’s <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/local/afoko-pleads-not-guilty-to-mahamas-murder-2024080705583495348">charges of murder</a> and conspiracy to commit murder.

This meant both men were acquitted of murder, but Alangdi was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and subsequently sentenced to death. He has since appealed the ruling.

According to the prosecution, on 14th May 2015, Paul Afoko (Gregory Afoko’s brother) and Kwabena Agyepong, then National Chairman and General Secretary of the NPP, arrived in Bolgatanga for a meeting.

The deceased, Adams Mahama, allegedly orchestrated an attack on them using a group of thugs, disrupting a planned campaign meeting at the Azumsolon Guest House. The meeting was reportedly arranged without Mahama’s knowledge and was seen as opposing the then-flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Although the police eventually restored order, Afoko, angered by the incident, confronted Mahama but was chased away by another group of thugs.

Following this incident, Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi allegedly formed a youth group to protect individuals perceived to be against Nana Akufo-Addo.

The prosecution stated that the accused held multiple meetings with this group. Then, on 20th May 2015, they allegedly ambushed Mahama outside his residence and attacked him with a substance suspected to be acid.

Mahama’s wife also suffered burns on her chest and breast while trying to assist her husband. When she asked what had happened, Mahama reportedly named Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi as his attackers.

Mahama succumbed to his injuries while being airlifted to Accra for treatment. Afoko was later arrested and led the police to Asabke’s father’s house.

However, by the time police traced Asabke’s residence, he had fled with his wife, abandoning their baby in the process.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that Mahama died from shock lung syndrome and extensive acid burns.

<h2>National Minimum Wage and Base Pay Increment Finalised</h2>

Subsequently, the NTC finalised negotiations on the determination of the National Daily Minimum Wage (NDMW) and the Base Pay increment for 2025.

According to a communiqué issued following its meeting on Thursday, 20th February, in Accra, the committee agreed to increase the 2025 minimum wage by 10% from the previous year. This represents an increase from GH₵18.15 to GH₵19.97, effective 1st March 2025.

The statement noted that the agreement on the increment took into account the current economic challenges, cost of living, business sustainability, and the desirability of attaining a higher level of employment.

Similarly, the government and Organised Labour reached an agreement to increase Base Pay on the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) by 10% across the board, from January 2025 to December 2025.

‘Ghana is a crime scene; the economy was criminally handled’ – President Mahama

The <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/national-tripartite-committee-commences-2025-minimum-wage-negotiations-2025020409471865499#google_vignette">National Tripartite Committee (NTC)</a>, in accordance with Section 113 (1) (a) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), has finalised its negotiations on the determination of the National Daily Minimum Wage (NDMW) and the Base Pay increment for 2025.

The NTC therefore issued a strong directive to all establishments to comply with the new wage structure by the stipulated date, cautioning:

<blockquote>Any establishment, institution, or organisation that flouts the 2025 NDMW shall be sanctioned in accordance with the law.</blockquote>

The committee further recommended that the 2025 NDMW should be tax-exempt.

The latest increment means that employees will earn a minimum of GH₵599.10 over a 30-day period.

Dr Bawumia further criticised President Mahama for the recent military raid on the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, likening it to a military regime.

<blockquote>This is more reminiscent of a military takeover than a peaceful democratic transition. These are certainly worrying times for our democracy, and the sooner action is taken to protect institutions and democratic practices, the better it will be for Ghana’s progress.</blockquote>

The ruling follows the MP’s defiance of an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as the legislator for the disputed constituency.

Presiding Judge, Justice Senyo Amedahe, issued the bench warrant after noting Mr Kumi’s failure to appear throughout the contempt proceedings.

The court had earlier restrained the MP from taking office pending the resolution of a legal dispute. However, despite this directive, Kumi proceeded to take the oath of office in Parliament.

Citing clear evidence of wilful defiance, the court ruled that the lawmaker had acted in contempt.

Attempts by the <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/bedzrah-blames-minority-for-the-suspension-of-vetting-committee-chaos-hearing-2025020611325040740">Minority Caucus</a> in Parliament to justify his absence from the hearing through an official letter were dismissed by the judge, who insisted that Kumi had disregarded the court’s authority.

The Akwatia seat was among several contested in the 2024 elections, whose results were controversially declared by the Electoral Commission at the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra.
