One of the most emotionally draining parts of being a director is showing your movie to an audience for the first time — especially when it isn’t finished yet.

That’s what John Krasinski had to suffer through when he showed “A Quiet Place” to a test audience. Like most test screenings, the movie was not completely done, including the CGI that would show the scary creature tormenting the family in the movie. That meant in many of the shots featuring the sound-sensitive creature, the test audience had to imagine what the actors on screen were frightened by. They saw a crude animation of the creature, or someone in a tight motion-capture suit.

Looking back, Krasinski said he thought most of the test screening audience was into the movie despite the lack of major computer-generated elements. That is, until Krasinski showed up on the big screen in the motion-capture suit playing the monster in the final scene.

“All of a sudden my giant foot with Vans on shows up, and we slowly pan up my very colorful, very tight, revealing suit, and end on me with a beard pretending to roar,” Krasinski told <a id="848379de-48ad-34c8-a425-312977c09e86" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/john-krasinski-on-a-quiet-place-success-and-plans-for-the-sequel-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Business Insider </a> , admitting he thought the movie was doomed. “The entire place exploded into laughter.”

Thankfully for Krasinski, the test audience didn’t rush to their phones after the screening and reveal what they had seen. Months later, with finished creature graphics in place, the movie went on to wow the audience at its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. Then it became one of the biggest earners of the year when it opened in theaters in April and went on to gross <a id="2e7dfbe9-3844-3e72-a618-334502912ee8" href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=aquietplace.htm"> over $340 million </a> at the worldwide box office.

But how did Krasinski end up in that motion-capture suit playing the creature?

He said it all happened spontaneously on set while he was talking to the movie’s visual effects supervisor, Scott Farrar, about how the creature would move during the movie’s thrilling ending, in which Evelyn (Emily Blunt) and her kids are trapped in the basement of their house with one of the creatures.

So the footage of Krasinski as the creature that the test screening saw was transformed by the CGI wizards at Industrial Light and Magic into the creepy thing we see in the finished movie.

“I think there is even audio of me being like [high-pitched] ‘Rooooaaaarrr!’” Krasinski said about playing the creature.

"With any luck, no," Krasinski said without hesitation.

With no major new releases in theaters, holdovers "Ralph Breaks the Internet" and "The Grinch" faced off in a very sleepy weekend at the domestic box office.

In a tight race, "Ralph Breaks the Internet" edged past "The Grinch" with an estimated <a id="9f1a04c9-46a4-33a8-a9f7-07fb6f927eea" href="https://twitter.com/ERCboxoffice/status/1071797324098101248"> $16.1 million </a> over the $15.1 million take for "The Grinch." This marks the third-straight weekend that the Disney title is at the top (with a global total to date of $258 million).

The figures are by no means large, but these titles have been in theaters for weeks, attracting repeat views and families looking to do something with their kids on the weekend. This is the first time in the history of the box office that two animated movies have faced off for gold and silver at the domestic box office for two straight weekends. <a id="0fb2c9e2-905d-38c9-a008-bd7a91cb060c" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ralph-breaks-the-internet-wins-box-office-for-a-second-weekend-2018-12?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Last weekend </a> , "Ralph Breaks the Internet" also beat out "The Grinch."

Most of the studios are gearing up to take your money in the coming weeks with Sony's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" opening this weekend, Disney's "Mary Poppins Returns" coming December 19, Paramount's "Bumblebee" coming December 21, and Warner Bros.'s "Aquaman" coming to the US December 21. Aquaman comes with big expectations as it just had the biggest opening ever for Warner Bros. in China this weekend.

With this slate of titles all receiving positive reactions from critics, it could be the final push needed for the domestic 2018 box office to have a record-breaking year-end total.

'Ralph Breaks the Internet' edges out 'The Grinch' to win the weekend box office for a 3rd straight time

John Krasinski knew it from the start: Making a horror movie with very little dialogue and the actors using sign language to communicate was a huge gamble. But having the opportunity to do something different by Hollywood standards was too enticing to not go forward with.

Today, Krasinski’s writing-directing-starring effort in “A Quiet Place” makes him look like a genius. The $17 million movie — about a family being tormented by monsters that kill anything that makes a sound — went on to make over <a id="765a0492-c139-3c56-a881-a8d5ddf911d8" href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=aquietplace.htm"> $340 million worldwide, </a> and Paramount is eagerly waiting for <a id="5eb7e5a8-cd54-3014-ab82-f35dfdd75142" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/john-krasinski-in-motion-capture-suite-for-a-quiet-place-2018-12?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Krasinski to complete the script to the sequel </a> .

But before all of that, Krasinski admits he and the rest of the cast and crew, which included his wife Emily Blunt starring opposite him in the movie, weren’t worried about anything other than trying to get through making the movie.

And it was within the making that Krasinski got a hint that things would be okay.

In a recent conversation with <a id="848379de-48ad-34c8-a425-312977c09e86" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/john-krasinski-on-a-quiet-place-success-and-plans-for-the-sequel-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Business Insider </a> , Krasinski explained that while shooting the scene in the movie in which Blunt’s character is homeschooling her son, Marcus (Noah Jupe), he saw the movie’s true potential.

“In that scene, two things happened,” Krasinski said. “Emily was obviously amazing, but one of the things is air started coming out of her mouth when she was mouthing the words as she was signing. There was something so beautiful in that. In that moment, I realized you can even communicate with breath, with no voice. That was really beautiful to me.”

“To watch this kid dealing with these circumstances that are completely imaginary but heavy for a kid to deal with — apocalyptic, losing a family member, a father who has fallen out of love with the whole family — these are big themes, and this kid was able to articulate in that one scene such powerful emotion that it felt so real,” he said. “I genuinely started tearing up behind the monitor watching this kid act because it was so moving.”

Krasinski said he was so excited by the performances in the scene that he turned to his producer and said the movie might actually work.

“And he said, ‘Hey, man, it's Day Three! It's a little too late to say this might work,’” Krasinski said.

The star said from that point on he knew to keep his excitement to himself.

But since the movie opened to audiences its others who have been excited. The movie recently was awarded one of the best movies of the year by the National Board of Review, and its a good chance it will be Oscar-nominated for its use of sound.

John Krasinski recounts the time he teared up on the set of 'A Quiet Place'

If China is any indication, "Aquaman" is going to be a huge hit for Warner Bros.

The latest DC Comic adaptation for the studio is currently playing in China, the rare title to get a release in the Middle Kingdom before playing in the US, and it's taking advantage of the opportunity.

According to the studio, "Aquaman" earned an estimated $24.6 million (RMB 169.5 million) on its opening day Friday on around 30,500 screens (all of them 3D).

That's the biggest opening day ever for a Warner Bros. release, and the biggest opening day ever for a release in China for December.

The movie had an incredible 86% share of the total market on Friday.

This is a huge boost for Warner Bros. and its DC Comics Extended Universe, which is coming off the disastrous release of "Justice League." And for it to happen in China is reassuring, as DCEU titles haven't done as well there as Disney's Marvel releases.

Back in the states, Twitter reaction from critics who have seen "Aquaman" has been positive, and reviews of the movie will begin to surface online starting next Tuesday.

"Aquaman" opens in the US on December 21.

'Aquaman' is already breaking box-office records in China, 2 weeks before the movie opens in the US

Coming off two Oscar wins for 2016's "La La Land," composer Justin Hurwitz is back in the award season race with his latest collaboration with director Damien Chazelle, "First Man," as he received a <a id="01411960-57d3-3f00-a5fc-4490798d4818" href="https://www.thisisinsider.com/golden-globes-2019-nominees-winners-2018-12"> best score Golden Globes nomination on Thursday </a> .

The look at the life of Neil Armstrong (played by Ryan Gosling), leading up to his legendary trip to the moon on Apollo 11, received mixed reactions when it opened due its slow-burn feel. But the work of Hurwitz has been universally praised. His mixture of percussion and electronic sound is a far cry from the song-and-dance musical feel of "La La Land," but perfectly accompanies Chazelle's telling of Armstrong's intimate story.

To get the sound right, Hurwitz began work composing the score in preproduction and had to get out of his comfort zone by working with instruments he'd never used before.

"Damien asked me to figure out ways for the movie to sound very different from any of the other scores that we've done," Hurwitz told Business Insider on Thursday after the Golden Globes nominations were announced. "He wanted me to learn a lot of electronic. We had never done any kind of electronic music before."

Hurwitz said Chazelle suggested he get his hands on a <a id="0bdec0dd-fd81-3705-afdb-4549b8bb622a" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin"> Theremin </a> , which in the past has given eerie sounds in movies like the 1951 sci-fi classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and Alfred Hitchcock's "Spellbound." Hurwitz kept it in his office for months, playing with it constantly, and got so into it that the demos he made with it were used in the movie.

But that wasn't the only first for Hurwitz. He also created his own samples for the score. He said he recorded metal sounds, burning fire, and water running and combined them all into a sample that he used throughout the movie.

"I had never done that before, designing musical sounds," he said. "That was a challenge and exciting to learn."

Music ideas evolved out of preproduction into the shooting. Hurwitz said there would be weekly friends and family screenings in which the music was scrutinized. Over days, weeks, and months the music would change often, sometimes even the instruments were swapped for others. Hurwitz said that it wasn't until post production that the harp was found to be the right choice as a main instrument to use throughout the score.

The Theremin is also featured in almost every music cue of the movie so it, as Hurwitz put it, "melts" into the score. But it's central during the moon landing scene in the movie, when Hurwitz's score is at its most thrilling.

For that part of the movie, Hurwitz said creating the music was very similar to how he did it on "Whiplash" and "La La Land" — working off of how Chazelle saw it.

The music for the moon landing scene was one of the first things Hurwitz and Chazelle came up with for the movie. After spending a few months figuring out the sound in preproduction, Chazelle took the lead in telling Hurwitz the musical beats.

Hurwitz then went off and made a demo of the music for the sequence using string, brass, and woodwind instruments that Chazelle used to storyboard the scene. That music was also used to edit the sequence before a full orchestra was brought in to perform the finished piece that would go in the movie.

The challenges in making "First Man" were what stuck out most for Hurwitz, he said, and he hopes they will continue going forward.

"I love the opportunity to learn new things and I like the idea of every score bringing in a couple of new tools," he said. "It depends on the project, but I like the idea of having an exploratory phase at the beginning where I can study up on some new stuff. I just want to keep evolving each time I do a movie."

How the 'First Man' composer created one of the best scores of the year, which was just nominated for a Golden Globe

On Thursday, MoviePass announced a new three-tier pricing plan for its subscribers beginning January 1, 2019.

According to a MoviePass press release, the movie-ticket subscription service will offer three new plans ranging in price and access. MoviePass hopes this tiering can attract everyone from the casual moviegoer to the power user and turn around negative subscriber growth trends.

<a id="ccae4d3e-3c21-36ff-a5b3-2e1ca3aa1207" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-moviepass-absent-ceo-new-plans-firings-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Business Insider reported in November </a> that the company was planning to shake up its pricing plan and had lost tens of thousands of subscribers had cancelled in October.

Here's a rundown of the new plans:

<ul><li> The "Select" package starts at $9.95 a month and allows subscribers to see three standard 2D movies per month at any point during their theatrical run except for opening weekend. MoviePass also said: "As product enhancements take place, more titles will become available, including on opening weekends, and this plan will ultimately result in a showtime-driven, inventory model." This seems to imply that certain showtimes will still be restricted, something that has frustrated MoviePass customers since the summer. (MoviePass did not immediately respond to a request for clarification.) </li><li> Starting at $14.95 per month, you can get the "All Access" plan, in which subscribers will be able to see any three 2D movies at any time, including opening weekend. </li><li> And for "Red Carpet," starting at $19.95 a month, you can see any three movies at any time, and one of those three can be seen in a higher format than 2D, such as IMAX or RealD 3D. </li></ul>

But there's a catch to this pricing: It could be more expensive depending on where you live in the country. For example, in "zone 1" the Select plan is priced at $9.95, however, in "zone 3," it's priced at $14.95 a month. And for Red Carpet in that "zone 3," the price is $24.95. What regions of the country fall under which "zones" were not specified in the release, but higher zones will likely be areas of higher-cost movie tickets, like New York City.

Beginning December 6, MoviePass will offer a limited-time holiday deal for some of these plans. You can purchase a single All Access subscription for 12 months for $119.95, or two or more for 12 months for $99.95. You can also get a Red Carpet single subscription for $149.95 for 12 months, or two or more for $139.95 for 12 months.

News of the new plans came with a confirmation of a leadership shuffle at MoviePass.

Business Insider reported in November that Khalid Itum had been handling much of the day-to-day operations for some time at MoviePass, and that the company's CEO, Mitch Lowe, had not been on an all-hands calls for months.

On Thursday, MoviePass <a id="aae593b8-4703-394a-a0b0-266f0e3b068a" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/05/business/media/moviepass-subscription-plan.html"> confirmed </a> that Itum had been promoted to executive vice president at MoviePass and that Lowe had turned over day-to-day operations of the company to him.

MoviePass unveils details about its new 3-tier pricing plan and confirms a leadership shakeup (HMNY)

John Krasinski is not shy to admit he had no interest in doing a sequel to “A Quiet Place.”

The $17 million horror movie, in which a family fends off creatures that kill you if you make a sound, was a cash cow for Paramount in 2018, as the movie took in an incredible <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=aquietplace.htm" id="713ad05a-04f4-3374-a852-8b09b2e3418e"> $340.6 million worldwide </a> at the box office. Of course, the executives wanted Krasinski — who wrote, directed, and starred in the movie alongside his wife Emily Blunt — to make another.

But in rewriting the original script from screenwriters Bryan Woods and Scott Beck, Krasinski felt he had pulled off what he set out to do: tell a unique, family-focused genre movie. What else could he offer a potential franchise? Well, he admitted he did have, as he put it, one “tiny idea.”

“I told them I wasn’t going to participate in [a sequel] and to find a new writer and director,” Krasinski told <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/john-krasinski-on-a-quiet-place-success-and-plans-for-the-sequel-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="5be53b08-1c39-3b18-a5f6-c2f78693819d"> Business Insider. </a> But when the movie’s producer Drew Form asked for some guidance in the search, Krasinski revealed the sequel idea he had. “Drew was very smart and said, ‘Think on it some more while we have these meetings with other people.’ Then he threw the Jedi mind trick of asking me to just write the sequel, and he sucked me in."

Clearly, Form, and likely everyone at Paramount, knew that for a successful “A Quiet Place” franchise to work it would help if Krasinski stayed on board. And the actor-director eventually couldn’t resist the chance to continue telling another story set in this world.

Krasinski said he’s taking a similar approach to writing the sequel as he did to the original. Krasinski wasn't a huge fan of the horror genre before making “A Quiet Place,” so he said he set out to figure out what made him scared and then used that to move forward with the movie. With the sequel, he said he hasn’t reached out to directors he knows for guidance on how to make a follow-up. Instead, he's staying clear of other people's successes and failures and figuring out a way to do it on his own.

“Most sequels are a hero and villain returning, but there’s no story behind it,” he said. “It’s basically, ‘Let’s give the audience the character they want.’ And I think the brilliant thing about ‘A Quiet Place’ is there’s a world.”

And it was Blunt who confirmed that to Krasinski, as well as pointing out that the movie he’s crafting will be hard to call a sequel.

“Emily actually blew my mind by categorizing it the correct way after I pitched it to her. She said, ‘This isn’t a sequel at all — this is the second book in a series of books. It’s a widening of a world,” Krasinski explained.

Krasinski is currently writing the sequel, which Paramount has slated for a May 2020 release.

John Krasinski explains why 'A Quiet Place 2' will not feel like a traditional sequel

For the third year in a row, a Disney movie has won the box office the weekend following the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

"Ralph Breaks the Internet" took in an estimated <a id="9f3f8a3f-51ac-3f13-ae75-fc55cf843641" href="https://twitter.com/ERCboxoffice/status/1069262214459092992"> $25.7 million </a> over the weekend, upping its North American total to $119 million.

Last year it was "Coco" that dominated the box office this time of year, bringing in <a id="02fe93bd-655b-344e-a608-536584daa78c" href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&amp;id=pixar1117.htm"> $27.5 million </a> . The year before that, it was "Moana" with a <a id="c85db8e4-a213-30aa-a2d3-b501539d4da6" href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&amp;id=disney1116.htm"> $28.2 million </a> take its second weekend.

In the past few years, Disney would follow up its Thanksgiving release with a "Star Wars" movie that would then dominate the box office until the new year. Though Disney doesn't have a "Star Wars" title out this December, the studio hopes that it can get some good coin from "Mary Poppins Returns," when it opens Dec. 19.

In a surprise for second place this weekend, Universal/Illumination's "The Grinch" snuck past MGM's "Creed II" to get the silver taking in <a id="3bba4493-48da-3620-a2e6-b4c2d15c4944" href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?view=&amp;yr=2018&amp;wknd=48&amp;p=.htm"> $17.7 million versus $16.8 million </a> for the "Creed" sequel.
