Apple's squid emoji has been lambasted by the Monterey Bay Aquarium for being anatomically inaccurate.

The aquarium tweeted on Wednesday, pointing out a huge flaw in Apple's rendering of the cephalopod.

In particular, the aquarium took issue with the siphon, the muscular tube which the squid uses to breathe, get rid of waste, and propel itself backwards through the water.

<a href="https://emojipedia.org/squid/" id="bc9e3828-b001-3dbc-aba0-e440a6fbf179"> According to Emojipedia </a> , the squid emoji first made its debut in 2016. Business Insider has contacted Apple to ask whether it plans to alter the design.

Apple has been known to change its emojis in response to public opinion. A preview of a bagel emoji drew such ire from New Yorkers in October that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-bagel-emoji-ios-121-2018-10?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="fcf79d93-b4ef-3873-adfb-aa89ea535934"> Apple changed it to include cream cheese </a> .

Mark Zuckerberg played a personal role in stamping on Facebook's competitors, according to a trove of documents published by British Parliament.

The papers, published by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee on Wednesday, contained emails between Facebook execs about limiting Twitter's now defunct looping video app Vine's access to data.

The internal Facebook documents were seized in November from Six4Three, a company which is suing Facebook for allegedly killing its business, an app which looked for pictures of people's Facebook friends in their swimwear.

An email, dated 24 January 2013 (the day Vine launched on iOS), contained statements attributed to Facebook Vice President Justin Osofsky and Zuckerberg.

"Twitter launched Vine today which lets you shoot multiple short video segments to make one single, 6-second video. As part of their NUX, you can find friends via FB. Unless anyone raises objections, we will shut down their friends API access today. We've prepared reactive PR, and I will let Jana know our decision."

Zuckerberg responded: "Yup, go for it."

Damian Collins, the UK lawmaker who published the documents, implied that Facebook restricted Vine's access to data because it viewed Vine a competitor. He lists the email as evidence under the section: "Targeting competitor Apps."

"The files show evidence of Facebook taking aggressive positions against apps, with the consequence that denying them access to data led to the failure of that business," Collins notes in his summary of the key issues raised by the Facebook documents.

Vine was shut down in 2016, but one of its cofounders, Dom Hoffman, recently revealed he will be <a id="6aee0300-0735-321b-a88a-5ca731fe9d13" href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/the-founder-of-vine-announced-the-name-of-his-new-looping-video-app-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> launching a new looping video app called Byte </a> .

When Facebook did remove Vine's access to Facebook friends in 2013, its public explanation as to why was <a id="b107beef-661a-3672-aa43-0a31ee92a3f4" href="https://www.wired.com/2013/01/facebook-vine-policy/"> found lacking by some </a> .

In a statement at the time, Osofsky pointed to a part of Facebook's policy, which allowed the firm to exclude apps that don't provide users with "an easy way to share back to Facebook." But as Wired pointed out at the time, Vine did allow users to share their videos on Facebook.

A Facebook spokesman attempted to discredit the documents published by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee. He said they formed part of a "baseless" lawsuit and were "misleading without additional context."

On Vine specifically, he added: "We built our developer platform years ago to pave the way for innovation in social apps and services. At that time we made the decision to restrict apps built on top of our platform that replicated our core functionality. These kind of restrictions are common across the tech industry with different platforms having their own variant including YouTube, Twitter, Snap and Apple.

"We regularly review our policies to ensure they are both protecting people's data and enabling useful services to be built on our platform for the benefit of the Facebook community. As part of our ongoing review we have decided that we will remove this out of date policy so that our platform remains as open as possible. We think this is the right thing to do as platforms and technology develop and grow."

Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994. It has since grown into a tech behemoth — <a id="1c073c50-c78a-3b7f-a517-e3018115e01a" href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-stocks-amazon/amazon-briefly-edges-out-apple-for-most-valuable-company-idUSKBN1O228J"> momentarily the most valuable company in the world this week </a> — and made him the richest man in modern history.

But the billionaire seems convinced that Amazon is doomed to die. Three times over the past five years Bezos has talked about the firm's inevitable demise.

Such chatter is strikingly unusual for a CEO of a major company. Media trained within an inch of their life and with demanding investors looking over their shoulders, senior executives are normally unflinchingly positive about their firm's prospects.

But it seems a fear of failure, and talking about that fear of failure, propels Bezos on. Here are some of the times he has talked about Amazon's inevitable demise:

<h1> 2013: Bezos says big companies only live for a "few decades" </h1>

Bezos spoke to CBS show "60 Minutes" in 2013 to show off Amazon's burgeoning automated drone delivery service. "Companies have short lifespans... and Amazon will be disrupted one day," he said.

Asked whether that fact worried him, Bezos replied: "I don't worry about it because I know it's inevitable. Companies come and go, and the companies that are the shiniest and most important of any era — you wait a few decades and they're gone."

Bezos added that he would love for Amazon's final breath to come after he himself dies.

<h1> 2017: Bezos ponders an "excruciating, painful decline" in a letter to shareholders </h1>

Bezos elaborated on his "Day One" philosophy in <a id="872b068a-1d2c-3104-a29b-f94d431172ac" href="https://www.recode.net/2017/4/12/15274220/jeff-bezos-amazon-shareholders-letter-day-2-disagree-and-commit"> a 2017 letter to shareholders </a> , in which he answered a question he'd got in an all-hands meeting about what "Day Two" looks like.

"Day Two is stasis. Followed by irrelevance. Followed by excruciating, painful decline. Followed by death. And that is why it is always Day One," Jezos answered.

"An established company might harvest Day 2 for decades, but the final result would still come," he added. He then talked about how a company can "fend off" Day Two.

<h1> 2018: "I predict one day Amazon will fail," he tells staff </h1>

In a recording of <a id="6137204e-62c5-3668-a7c7-09f3142fd386" href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-says-amazon-will-fail-one-day-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> an all-hands meeting obtained by CNBC </a> , Bezos was still just as convinced of Amazon's inescapable mortality.

"Amazon is not too big to fail ... In fact, I predict one day Amazon will fail," Bezos said in reply to a staffer who asked about big businesses like Sears going bankrupt.

"Amazon will go bankrupt. If you look at large companies, their lifespans tend to be 30-plus years, not a hundred-plus years," he said.

Bezos went on to say that it was his job to delay that date by as long as possible. Amazon turned 24 years old in July, so it is fast approaching Bezos's 30-year benchmark.

Amazon was the subject of a "South Park" roasting on Wednesday, which portrayed CEO Jeff Bezos as a giant-brained, telepathic supervillain.

The episode, entitled "Unfulfilled" after Amazon's fulfilment centers (the name it gives its warehouses), satirised reports of Amazon's working conditions, as Butters' father works inside a warehouse.

At one point a montage showed him working to "Sixteen Tonnes," a song about working in a coal mine made famous by Tennesee Ernie Ford in the 1950s.

Bezos appears as a supervillain with an enormous head who communicates telepathically. He intimidates the mayor, threatening repercussions after the town's Amazon workers go on strike.

Amazon's working conditions have been called into question by numerous reports, and on Wednesday <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2018/12/05/us/amazon-workers-bear-repellent/index.html" id="b870d70f-144a-370e-a671-655718114001"> 24 warehouse workers in New Jersey were hospitalised </a> when an automated machine punctured a 9-ounce can of bear spray.

Chinese media has launched a stinging attack on the US following the arrest of Huawei's CFO Meng Wanzhou in Canada on Saturday.

Meng was arrested on December 1 and faces extradition to the US. On the same day, President Trump sat down with President Xi Jinping in Argentina to discuss the countries' ongoing trade war. White House officials told Reuters <a id="766f7d0f-6bde-36aa-ad67-13c96b3a9d19" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-huawei-meng-wanzhou-arrest-xi-jinping-2018-12?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Trump did not know about the extradition request </a> .

An editorial in the state-run China Daily said the arrest was part of an effort by the US to stifle Huawei's growth, saying it was "undoubtedly true and proven is the US is trying to do whatever it can to contain Huawei's expansion in the world simply because the company is the point man for China's competitive technology companies."

Global Times, also state-run, said Washington is "resorting to a despicable rogue's approach as it cannot stop Huawei's 5G advance in the market."

"With the arrest, the US is sending signals to the international community that it is targeting Huawei," The Gobal Times added.

China says the US is acting like a 'despicable rogue' over the arrest of Huawei's CFO

Gwyneth Paltrow <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/gwyneth-paltrow-wants-to-convert-you-1543931659" id="d1f87170-6689-3a89-a5aa-1b764961692e"> told the Wall Street Journal Magazine </a> that she has emailed Jeff Bezos for advice, but the world's richest man has never responded.

The actress and entrepreneur told the Journal that she keeps a close-knit circle of advisors including Oprah Winfrey and Disney CEO Bob Iger. However, she said her emails to Jeff Bezos appear to have gone unnoticed. "I've emailed him," she told the Journal. "He won't email back."

A spokesperson for Bezos declined to comment when contacted by the Journal. Amazon was not immediately available to comment when contacted by Business Insider.

Although it is not incumbent upon Bezos to act as mentor to Paltrow, he has been known to act on emails out of the blue. He once forwarded on an email that was sent directly to him in desperation by a man whose <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-intervened-to-help-amazon-customer-find-stolen-dog-2018-5?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="aaaa71b2-d3e1-3a37-a0fe-af684bc1285b"> dog was stolen by contractor delivering packages for Amazon </a> . The dog was later returned to her owner.

In April Bezos said that he still reads customer complaints, and will <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/bezos-explains-his-dreaded-one-character-emails-2018-4?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="6bdebe80-ece2-377d-aba2-b24cf621feae"> sometimes forward them on to the relevant department </a> . He has a company email address, jeff@amazon.com, where customers can reach out. It is not clear at this stage whether this is address to which Paltrow sent her emails.

Facebook has tumbled seven places on Glassdoor's list of the best places to work after a year of scandals, data breaches, and employee discontent.

Glassdoor published its list of the <a href="https://www.glassdoor.com/Award/Best-Places-to-Work-LST_KQ0,19.htm" id="73584bb6-49de-3061-ac97-d3c5dfb726ee"> 100 Best Places to Work in 2019 </a> on Tuesday, which is based on ratings and reviews left by employees.

Last year, Facebook topped the bill as the number one place to work, but now it has fallen to number seven, just behind LinkedIn. It is Facebook's lowest ranking in the survey since 2015, when it finished in 15th position.

A series of scandals this year have impacted morale, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/facebook-employee-morale-drops-after-scandals-survey-report-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="fec8615a-6ad0-3826-abf9-d6351ef1999c"> according to the results of an internal company survey obtained by The Wall Street Journal </a> .

Back in 2017, 84% of the workforce "said they were optimistic about the company's future," a figure that has since dropped to just 52%. And 72% of employees previously said "Facebook was making the world better" — now it's 53%.

Glassdoor identified frequent complaints from employees, which included "poor work-life balance" and "long hours."

One review from November, titled "Six months of strange tech cult," said the company displays a "complete lack of moral responsibility for the world." Another, also from November, lamented "the product is not technology, its [sic] the users."

Under "advice to managers," one employee wrote: "Please get the company out of bad reputation slump... align business objectives with long-term strategy of connecting people and communities."

But Facebook's overall ratings remain positive, with 96% of reviews saying they approve of CEO Mark Zuckerberg at time of writing. One reviewer described it as "Disneyland" for software engineers, and another wrote: "Don't believe all the negative press."

Facebook plummets down list of best companies to work for after catastrophic year

Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian has got bad news for Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks.

Speaking at Business Insider's IGNITION conference on Monday, Ohanian said he believes that the tech industry has hit "peak social," and that users will migrate away from social networks.

Business Insider's US Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell asked whether platforms like Reddit and Facebook, which together have billions of users, are now facing crisis. "Are the days of these big companies done?" asked Shontell.

"I really believe that we've hit... peak social, where the platforms that are one too many, where we follow individuals, have really in a lot of ways run their course, and we've reached the ceiling," he replied.

When asked whether he was referring to Twitter, Ohanian said: "All of them. Social media as we know it, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, all these."

Ohanian later took a swipe at professional networking site LinkedIn. "LinkedIn is not a home, Linkedin is just sort of a box that you check," he said.

Some of the platforms he namechecked are still growing rapidly. <a id="6c21e213-1d53-3c4e-aeba-341ca3c94d5e" href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/facebook-q3-2018-earnings-2018-10?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Facebook's monthly users were up 10% to nearly 2.3 billion </a> in Q3, while <a id="dd995a9f-7bdf-3599-a24c-14e10b31c3bf" href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/instagram-monthly-active-users-1-billion-2018-6?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Instagram recently hit 1 billion users </a> . <a id="8886a07e-96c1-3811-a955-3393a76feb90" href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/twitter-q3-earnings-2018-10?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Twitter's monthly users are down </a> , however.

<h1> Ohanian: Social media users crave community </h1>

Instead of social networks, Ohanian said people are increasingly wanting to belong to a smaller community of like-minded individuals with shared interests.

"What people seem to be clamouring for more and more now is community, and so whether that goes to private group chats — like your WhatsApp group, your Signal group — or new platforms that have emerged," he said.

He believes that big social media sites are seeing a backlash because people now feel like their voices are being drowned out.

"We're seeing this as a response to the fact that so much of social engagement is not about a sense of community, it's about a sense of playing to your tribe, your following. And if you don't have a following, you don't really have a voice," he said.

Ohanian added that Reddit was "ahead of the game" in creating smaller communities online, but added that it is still too ubiquitous. He predicted that new platforms will spring up to cater to particular interest groups, such as a home for fans of "#Girlboss" author Sophia Amoruso.

"I think we're gonna see this vulcanisation where more of these communities will start to go back and move to everything, from even Facebook groups or subreddits, to entirely new platforms that are getting built," he said.

Ohanian said at the moment Telegram and Discord are the two biggest examples of these new, more tailored platforms. Telegram is an encrypted messaging app, and Discord is a chat app aimed at gamers.

Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian issued an ominous warning for Facebook: 'We've hit peak social'

The head of MI6 Alex Younger warned of a growing security threat from Chinese phone company Huawei at a speech on Monday.

In a rare speech at St Andrews University in Scotland, Younger said the UK will have to make "some decisions" about Huawei after allies, such as the US, <a id="a0a85e54-9697-3a94-a2b7-59cb84b93870" href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/ap-australia-bans-huawei-from-5g-network-over-security-concerns-2018-8?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Australia </a> , and <a id="a43411b5-c8d0-3c61-acfc-c7ccc8285c01" href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/r-huawei-seeks-meeting-with-new-zealand-government-after-5g-bid-rejected-on-national-security-grounds-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> New Zealand, </a> banned it from launching 5G networks.

Younger said the arrival of 5G would make it more difficult to monitor Huawei's technology, some of which the UK already has installed in its telecoms network, and which is tested by British secret services at GCHQ.

He added that the Chinese government's approach to data protections means "they are able to use and manipulate data sets on a scale that we can only dream of."

Britain's spy chief joined the US in sounding the alarm on the Chinese company that sells more phones than Apple

After being awarded the first "Courage Against Hate" award by the Anti-Defamation League, Tim Cook gave a speech saying tech needs to take a moral stand against white supremacy.

In doing so, the Apple CEO appeared to take the latest in a long line of swipes against some of his rivals, including Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

Apple took a strong stance against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones in August, removing his podcasts from iTunes and its podcast app. This set off <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-shuts-down-most-of-alex-jones-infowars-podcasts-2018-8?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="88d42ec0-8641-3447-add1-182b0ee9ea35"> a chain reaction of big tech companies booting the Infowars host off their platforms </a> .

"At Apple, we believe technology needs to have a clear point of view on this challenge," Cook said on Monday night. "There is no time to get tied up in knots. That's why we only have one message for those who seek to push hate, division, or violence: You have no place on our platforms. You have no home."

He added: "If we can't be clear on moral questions like these then we've got big problems. At Apple, we are not afraid to say that our values drive our curation decisions. Doing what's right — creating experiences free from violence and hate, experiences that empower creativity and new ideas — is what our customers want us to do."

The "tied up in knots" comment could be read as a message for the platforms that swiftly followed Apple in banning Jones.

Facebook removed the conspiracy theorist, but this was after suspending him for 30 days in July. YouTube took similar action, again after a previous suspension. Twitter permanently suspended Jones in September, but again this was after an earlier temporary suspension.

Although Apple did also dither over Jones. It permanently <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-permanently-banned-infowars-from-the-app-store-but-its-still-on-android-2018-9?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="f170eee3-153a-3dca-a0e8-0d82ed395e8d"> removed the Infowars app from the App Store for "objectionable content" </a> in September, despite having stated <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-no-plans-to-ban-infowars-official-app-2018-8?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="fb2581c9-88af-3514-a4d3-07bd48f32609"> it had no plans to do so in August </a> .

Cook continued: "The most sacred thing that each of is given is our judgement, our morality, our own innate desire to separate right from wrong. Choosing to set that responsibility aside at a moment of trial is a sin."

He went on to say that Apple has always prohibited music with a history of white supremacy. "Why? Because it’s the right thing to do. And as we showed this year, we won't give a platform to violent conspiracy theorists. Why? Because it’s the right things to do," he said.

Cook has repeatedly called out rivals this year, without actually naming them. In particular, he has taken a swipe at the privacy standards of firms like Facebook following the catastrophic Cambridge Analytica data scandal.

Tim Cook appeared to take a swipe at Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter in a speech railing against white supremacy

Back in 2013, Jeff Bezos predicted that Amazon's drone delivery service would have lift off in five years' time. Fast forward to the end of 2018, and the drones are yet to materialize.

Bezos, <a id="bbfa2ec2-1a20-35fa-a079-765ef0181423" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-jeff-bezos-bill-gates-net-worth-2018-7?r=UK&amp;IR=T?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> now the world's richest man </a> , showed off Amazon's "octocopter" delivery drones to CBS's "60 Minutes" in 2013. He said drones would be able to deliver items up to five pounds in weight within a 10-mile radius of an Amazon warehouse.

When asked how long it would take before the drones were up and running, Bezos replied: "I'm an optimist... could it be four, five years? I think so. It will work, and it will happen, and it's gonna be a lot of fun."

To be fair to Bezos, he admitted back in 2013 that there was a lot of work that needed to go into making the drones safe. "This thing can't land on somebody's head while they're walking around their neighborhood," he said.

And although the drones have not launched, that doesn't mean Amazon has halted development. In 2016, <a id="375264d6-e3bf-3d20-a100-34bacf0e1eb1" href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/amazon-delivery-drones-tested-multiple-uk-sites-2016-10?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Amazon started testing them out on UK sites </a> , and in July 2017, a patent filing revealed it was working on a way for <a id="3a877397-9564-383c-a1de-ea6b7513c595" href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/amazon-patents-drones-scan-customers-homes-target-adverts-2017-7?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> drones to capture data by scanning people's homes </a> .

Uber has reportedly held talks about a multi-billion dollar acquisition of electric scooter startups Bird and Lime.

<a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/uber-exploring-deal-to-buy-bird-or-lime" id="3cb1966d-aa22-3742-a81d-64b40d2b0404"> The Information </a> originally reported Uber's interest in the buzzy scooter firms, while sources familiar with all three companies <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/b3429504-f6a3-11e8-af46-2022a0b02a6c" id="800119b5-9efe-3339-ad77-eca2c7fa3c03"> told the Financial Times </a> that the talks are still at an early stage.

The Information said a deal for either company could help Uber alleviate scooter supply constraints after launching its Jump brand of two-wheeled vehicles in October.

Amazon is testing out its cashierless checkout technology in bigger stores — with one eye on Whole Foods, <a id="210a6f4f-51ea-3f27-a2dd-bf04c40604cb" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/amazon-tests-its-cashierless-technology-for-bigger-stores-1543776320"> according to The Wall Street Journal. </a>

Sources told the Journal that Amazon is testing out the futuristic tech — which tracks and charges for the items shoppers take from the shelves — in Seattle, in a space formatted like a large store.

Amazon's cashierless tech is already in use in brick-and-mortar Amazon Go stores in Seattle, Chicago, and San Francisco. <a id="56d82a96-410c-38fa-a396-fc7dc5c14c26" href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/report-amazon-wants-3000-amazon-go-stores-by-2021-2018-9?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> It is reportedly considering opening 3,000 such stores across America. </a>

One source told the Journal that the tech struggles in bigger stores with higher ceilings and more items. Consequently, it could take a while to get it right, the source added.

Those familiar with the matter also speculated that the most likely application for the larger-scale cashierless tech would be in Whole Foods, <a id="79d9a604-c743-3f2e-a254-1229e4a26c19" href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/amazon-buying-acquiring-whole-foods-for-42-a-share-2017-6?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> which Amazon acquired in 2017 </a> .
