<p>The Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) has welcomed its largest-ever intake, matriculating 5,128 students at its 34th matriculation ceremony on Saturday, 22nd February 2025.</p><p>Addressing the new students, <a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/gctu-vice-chancellor-touts-institutions-commitment-to-digitalisation-in-ghana-2024120507421493926">Vice-Chancellor Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa</a> challenged them to embrace their role in shaping Ghana’s own Silicon Valley. He emphasised that their academic journey at GCTU would not only equip them with industry-relevant ICT skills but also position them as innovators and entrepreneurs in the technology space.</p>

<p>He reassured students of a transformative educational experience, highlighting state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with <a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/local/govt-to-commission-ghs200-million-digital-youth-hub-in-december-2024120312570533949">cutting-edge technology and strong industry collaborations </a>designed to provide real-world exposure.</p>

<p>Prof. Afoakwa also underscored the university’s commitment to student success and retention, noting that GCTU continues to enhance learning through problem-based and experiential approaches, supported by ICT-driven solutions.  </p><p>This year’s admissions mark a historic milestone for GCTU, reflecting a significant 40% increase from last year’s intake of 3,660 students. Prof. Afoakwa commended the collective efforts of the university’s Student Recruitment Team, Admissions Officers, Deans, and faculty in achieving this growth.  </p><p></p>

<blockquote><p>“With a renewed focus on student-staff relations and an improved learning environment, I am confident that our student numbers will continue to grow in the 2025/2026 academic year,” he stated.  </p></blockquote>

<p></p><p>A new report by the Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition has revealed that 21.1% of election-related disinformation targeted President John Dramani Mahama. In comparison, 5.7% was aimed at former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.  </p><p>Titled Countering Electoral Disinformation: Lessons from Ghana’s 2024 Elections, the report was officially launched on 30 January 2025 by Kweku Krobea Asante, Coordinator for the Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition.  </p><p></p>

<p>The findings highlight the persistent spread of false information during Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, with disinformation aimed at prominent political figures, political parties, and state institutions. The report notes that 28.5% of disinformation claims were directed at the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while 24.4% targeted the National Democratic Congress (NDC).  </p><p></p>

<p>Misinformation also affected institutions such as the Electoral Commission, which faced 17.9% of false claims, while its Chairperson was the subject of 0.08%. Running mates of both leading parties were also targets, although to a lesser extent.  </p><p>The coalition attributed much of this disinformation to politically aligned social media accounts. Pro-NPP accounts were responsible for 22 claims, while pro-NDC accounts generated 15. Non-aligned media sources accounted for 17 claims combined.  </p><p></p>

<p>On 6 December, just a day before the elections, a coordinated social media campaign spread harmful disinformation against President Mahama using hashtags such as #IncompetentMahama and #FailedMahama. The same network promoted hashtags like #BawumiaForPresident and #1TouchForBawumia.  </p>

<p>The coalition took proactive measures to combat this disinformation by publishing cautionary flyers to alert the public about key perpetrators.  </p><p>The Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition is a partnership between fact-checking organisations, civil society groups, and the media aimed at combating election disinformation and fostering accurate information sharing before, during, and after Ghana’s 2024 elections. Its core members include GhanaFact (FactSpace West Africa), Fact-Check Ghana (Media Foundation for West Africa), and DUBAWA Ghana (Centre for Journalism, Innovation and Development), all of which are affiliates of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN).</p>

<p>Renowned gospel artist KODA passed away on Sunday, 21 April 2024, at the age of 45. The news of his demise was confirmed by his close friend and fellow musician, Nii Okai, who expressed heartbreak over the loss. While the exact cause of death remains unclear, reports suggest he had been battling an illness.</p><p>KODA, a gifted singer, songwriter, and music producer from Takoradi, played a pivotal role in Ghana’s gospel music scene. His collaborations with prominent figures such as the late Danny Nettey and Pastor Joe Beechem solidified his reputation as a versatile and influential artist.  </p><p>  </p>

<p>Evangelist Agnes Aba Annan, mother of gospel singer Empress Gifty, passed away on 14 December 2024. Empress Gifty shared the heartbreaking news on social media, referring to her mother affectionately as “Agaga.”  </p><p>Evangelist Aba Annan was not only a spiritual leader but also a recognisable figure in Ghanaian entertainment, having appeared in films and television commercials. Her influence extended beyond the pulpit, leaving a legacy of love and faith.  </p><p></p>

<p>Actress Mercy Little Smith, best known for her role as Benyiwaa in the television series Efiewura, passed away on 17 December 2024. The announcement was made on the Efiewura series’ official Facebook page.  </p><p>Smith’s role in Efiewura, where she played the wife of Judge Koboo, endeared her to many fans. While the cause of her death has not been disclosed, her contribution to Ghanaian television remains unforgettable.  </p><p></p>

<p>Legendary traditional singer Naa Amanua Dodoo of Wulomei fame died on 14 September 2024 at the age of 68. Highlife musician Rex Omar confirmed the news of her passing on social media.  </p><p>Naa Amanua began her music career in the 1960s and became renowned for her powerful voice and storytelling abilities. She was a staunch advocate for women’s rights, using her music to inspire social change. In 2018, she was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.  </p><p></p>

<p>Veteran Ghanaian actor and creative Albert Odartei Jackson-Davis passed away on Saturday, 14 September 2024, after battling an undisclosed illness. The news was confirmed by Akunu Dake, the Chief Executive Officer of Heritage Development, in a heartfelt Facebook post.  </p><p>Akunu Dake reflected on his friendship with the late actor, writing: “This is very difficult for me. Rest in peace my good friend and colleague Albert Odartei Jackson-Davis. Able Deputy Executive Director during our PANAFEST years in the 1990s.”  </p><p>Jackson-Davis was celebrated for his powerful performances on screen, often portraying elite or well-to-do characters. His acting style, which combined elegance and simplicity, made him a standout figure in Ghanaian cinema. </p>

<p>The passing of these esteemed personalities has left a void in Ghana’s entertainment and creative industries. Their legacies, however, will continue to inspire generations to come.  </p>

<p>The Ghana Fact-checking Coalition has released a damning report on the spread of disinformation during Ghana's 2024 elections, calling out high-profile users on X (formerly Twitter) for amplifying false narratives. The findings were presented at a press conference on 11th December 2024, by Roselena Ahiable, Project Manager of DUBAWA West Africa, at the Media Foundation for West Africa’s office.  </p>

<p>According to the report, on 6th December, the day before the elections, a network of coordinated accounts on X began circulating misleading information, particularly targeting John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The accounts promoted hashtags like #IncompetentMahama and #FailedMahama, while also supporting the opposing candidate, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, through hashtags such as #1TouchForBawumia and #BawumiaForPresident.  </p>

<p>The coalition highlighted one of the leading accounts, Kwaku Brown (@kwakubrownies), which falsely claimed that Martin Amidu had accused Mahama of being “the father of all corruption” in the Airbus scandal. Another fabricated claim involved Mahama allegedly selling his Dubai hotels to a former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources. Both assertions were debunked by the Ghana Fact-checking Coalition, which has urged the public to remain cautious of such false information.  </p>

<p>Further investigations revealed several other handles, including those of Fiifi Sage (@_fiifi_sage), Kevin Taylor (@kevinekowtaylor), and General Buhari (@Gen_Buhari_), for spreading similar disinformation. Notably, General Buhari’s profile, ironically, claims to be a fact-checker.  </p><p></p>

<p>The coalition’s monitoring of disinformation surrounding the elections prompted several major news platforms to either amend their articles or remove misleading content. Key reports were shared with election stakeholders, including the Election Security Taskforce, which played a significant role in the Media Situation Room's efforts. </p>

<p>The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that it will officially declare the 2024 presidential election results today, Monday, 9th December 2024, at 4:30 PM. The declaration will take place at the EC’s Corporate Head Office in Accra, according to a communiqué titled “Let the Citizens Know.</p>

<p>Thus far, the EC has received results from 13 out of the 16 regions, with the collation of the remaining three regions expected to conclude shortly.  </p>

<p></p><p>Meanwhile, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has conceded defeat and congratulated John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as Ghana’s President-elect.  </p><p>In a message lauded for promoting peace, Dr Bawumia remarked, “I called President Mahama and congratulated him. Ghana is more important than our individual political ambitions.” He further urged citizens to respect the will of the people and work together for a united Ghana.  </p><p>This election, held on 7th December, saw the NDC secure a commanding lead in parliamentary elections, described by Dr Bawumia as a “hands-down victory.” Despite reports of violence, including two fatalities, the Vice President’s concession is seen as a vital step in safeguarding Ghana’s democratic stability.  </p><p>Stay tuned for the EC’s official declaration later today.  </p>

<p>Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei has graciously conceded defeat after projections showed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) taking an early lead in the 2024 presidential election.  </p><p>In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, the outspoken supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) reflected on the campaign journey and extended his congratulations to the NDC.  </p><p></p>

<blockquote><p>“What a fascinating phenomenon we’ve just witnessed! Ghana has spoken, and the results were not quite what we all anticipated. I am beyond proud of myself, my team, and our collective efforts; we gave it our all and fought a vigorous battle,” Osei wrote.  </p></blockquote>

<p>The actor, who had strongly backed the NPP and its presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasised his belief in the party’s policies but acknowledged the cyclical nature of Ghanaian politics.  </p>

<p>The Vice-Chancellor of Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to advancing Ghana’s digitalisation agenda. Speaking at the 34th Congregation Ceremony of GCTU on 30th November 2024 at the university's Tesano campus, Professor Afoakwa emphasised the university's leadership in preparing the workforce for Ghana’s digital economy.</p>

<blockquote><p>"We are poised to lead the digitalisation agenda the government is pursuing by building the capacity to train a skilled workforce for the digital economy," he stated.</p></blockquote>

<p> Professor Afoakwa highlighted GCTU’s unique offerings, which include specialised programmes such as information systems, data science, analytics, and the Internet of Things, positioning it as a trailblazer in the field. Despite these strides, the Vice-Chancellor acknowledged infrastructural challenges hindering the university's growth.                                                                                                                                                                      He noted increased enrolment due to the institution's reputation for producing industry-ready graduates but pointed out the limited infrastructure as a barrier. </p>

<blockquote><p>"Now that we have been given a special mandate, we see increased enrolment as our graduates are the best in the industry. Yet, infrastructure remains limited," he said.</p></blockquote>

<p>To address this, he revealed that the government has initiated the procurement process for constructing a 3,000-bed hostel to improve student accommodation. </p>

<p>The Valedictorian and Best Graduating Student, Blessed Assefuah, also shared her experience. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a CGPA of 3.94, she highlighted the challenges of balancing her university studies with professional certification at the Institute of Chartered Accountants. </p>

<p>In his address, the Director-General of GI-KACE, Dr Collins Yeboah-Afari, representing the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, announced the upcoming GHS 200 million Digital Youth Hub commission. The flagship project under the Ghana CARES programme is set to launch in December 2024.  </p>

<p>Describing the hub as a "state-of-the-art facility," Dr Yeboah-Afari explained its role in fostering digital innovation among young entrepreneurs by providing training, mentorship, and resources in fields such as artificial intelligence, digital marketing, and financial technology (fintech). He further highlighted its potential to create jobs, reduce unemployment, and drive the growth of local tech companies. Dr Yeboah-Afari also outlined the government’s efforts to improve digital connectivity through the Ghana Rural Telephony and Digital Inclusion Project, which has connected 1,460 of 2,116 targeted communities, benefitting over 3.5 million Ghanaians as of October 2024. Additionally, he noted the rollout of the National Roaming System, which ensures seamless access to network services in rural areas, further bridging the digital divide. </p>

<p>The ceremony marked the graduation of 1,568 students, including two PhD holders, 43 Coventry University graduates, 13 master’s degree graduates, and 1,508 undergraduates from the ICT, Business, and Engineering faculties.</p>
