<h1>President Uhuru Kenyatta has crushed the hopes of Kenyans who had been banking on him to suspend the implementation of the unpopular 16 per cent Value Added Tax on petroleum products.</h1>

On Thursday evening, President Kenyatta rejected the Finance Bill 2018, effectively condemning Kenyans to buy fuel at a steep price of upwards of Sh130.

Earlier on, Minority Leader John Mbadi had accused National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi of deliberately sitting on the Bill.

“It is unfortunate that despite Parliament approving the Finance Bill, 2018, exactly two weeks ago today, the same has not been forwarded to the President for assent,” he said.

Uhuru’s move comes even as Treasury Secretary gave a strong signal that the unpopular 16 per cent VAT on petroleum products might be dropped.

While speaking to reporters in Nairobi on Thursday, Henry Rotich said the <a id="affeb045-fb64-5d2b-bb29-b138af3c0ac2" href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/bi/finance/rotich-says-16-vat-to-be-reviewed-after-public-uproar-id8849811.html">16 per cent VAT will be reviewed “shortly” </a>and his ministry was in final stage of striking a deal with the National Assembly following discussions which started last week.

“We are looking at options of reviewing it and that discussion is at final stages. I can’t give you any direction at the moment,” Said Mr Rotich.

Since 1st September when the 16 per cent levy on petroleum product came into effect, there has been a countrywide uproar, with public transport players hitting passengers with a 40 per cent raise on fares.

The 16 per cent Value Added Tax on petroleum products was seen as a litmus test for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, with the government walking a tightrope between keeping its commitments to international donors and caving into the public interest.

Had Uhuru assented the bill, Kenya would have been at risk of an economic meltdown.

IMF would have locked out Kenya precautionary credit and then be at liberty to recall their outstanding principals with could immediately trigger an economic meltdown in the country.

The President’s rejection of the Bill now puts to rest the ongoing stalemate over the 16 per cent VAT on fuel.

In this age of climate change and pollution, forests have never been more important to the human existence.

According to scientists forests can help regulate rainfall and protecting and expanding forests is one of the cheapest and surest ways of curbing climate change.

Forests provide water storage, dictate weather patterns and, critically, act as the planet's lungs by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere through photosynthesis.

"Trees and forests play an essential role in mitigating the impact of climate change. Planting trees is one of the most important things we can do to contribute to the health of the planet," said UN Secretary General António Guterres, at a forum on forests in March.

Therefore for a country which produced the first African woman to win the Nobel prize, Nobel laureate, Professor Wangari Maathai, you would think Kenya would know better especially on the importance of forests.

In late 2017 and early 2018, Kenya was hit with a particularly severe drought which saw hundreds of livestock die and millions of Kenyans starve after much awaited rainfall failed to fall due to ‘hostile environment’.

Since then the country has rolled up its sleeves and embarked on reforestation efforts with renewed vigour including conscripting the national army and primary schools in planting tree seedlings.

In an effort to combat deforestation and rebuild the nation's depleted forests, the government also unveiled a number of counter measures including evicting people who had encroach on forest land and issued a three month logging ban.

While the governments’ reforestation efforts are admirable and even commendable, two Kenyans are proving you don’t need millions to plant trees and have gone an extra mile in increasing the country’s forest cover in the most novel and cheapest method, relying only on a simple slingshot and the services of herders’ boys.

Nicholas Waweru is a conservationist based in Kisaju, south of Nairobi is literally changing the semi-arid landscape of the area, one shot at a time.

Waweru works with Teddy Kinyanjui, a conservationist living in Nairobi's Kabete estate, who makes the slingshots and seed balls.

On daily basis Waweru distributes a packet of seed balls, made of charcoal dust, cassava starch and tree seeds, to herder boys in the area before they go grazing.

Kinyanjui researches what trees grow best in each area, then manufactures seed balls designed for that area. He sources the seeds from the Kenya Forest Research Institute.

The conservationist who says he inherited his love of trees from his late father, Maxwell Kinyanjui, a professor at the University of Nairobi who was well known for his conservation efforts, explains that packing tree seeds in charcoal dust, sourced from a charcoal briquette-making firm, gives the seedlings a better chance of sprouting.

"After research, we found out that 95 percent of tree seeds are eaten up by insects or animals such as goats or birds," he said.

"You can imagine if you just took a handful of seeds and threw them down on the ground, and waited for three more months until the rains come - it's just going to get eaten by something," he said.

But the charcoal dust deters animals and when the rains arrive, they wash away the charcoal coating, allowing the seeds to sprout.

Kinyanjui has helped distribute about 2 million tree seeds across the country, focusing in areas where charcoal making has led to deforestation.

To encourage herder boys to use the seed balls, Kinyanjui organizes shooting competitions, with those able to hurl the balls furthest winning certificates.

He has gone an extra mile and approached airlines and corporations in  abid to scatter the seedlings even further and wider.

He has persuaded some aeroplane companies, hot air balloon owners, and paragliders to fling the balls, and he sells some to corporations, who distribute them to customers and staff as part of corporate social responsibility campaigns.

Kinyanjui recognises that not all the trees will sprout and survive, particularly with hungry goats foraging in many areas. But "this is better than nothing", he said.

Indeed the world would be so much a better place if we all embraced Kinyanjui’s ‘better than nothing’ mentality.

dressed in traditional black and red attire filled the main hall of the Accra
Conference Centre, which sits about 4,000 people and others watched the funeral
proceedings on a giant screen in an auditorium just outside the hall.

The
former queen of the Netherlands, Princess Beatrix, and her daughter-in-law
Princess Mabel, who were close friends of Annan, were among the mourners.

As the
funeral proceeding went on, millions of mourners worldwide followed the
proceeding online and kept sending their condolences.

Speaking
at the funeral, current UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres said Annan was an
exceptional leader who saw the UN as a force for good.

"As we face the headwinds of our troubled and
turbulent times, let us always be inspired by the legacy of Kofi Annan," Mr Guterres said.

"Our
world needs it now more than ever," he added.

Ghana's
President Nana Akufo-Addo described Annan as "one of the truly iconic
figures of modern times".

"The outpouring of tributes from the world over is
an accurate measure of the man, a man who gave his life to making peace where
there was conflict, to defending the voiceless who were powerless, to promoting
virtue where there was evil,"
he said.

The
Anglican bishop of Annan's home city of Kumasi in central Ghana, the Most
Reverend Daniel Sarfo, said Annan had fought the good fight, I have finished
the race, I have kept the faith.

"Today
history is being made in Ghana. One of our illustrious sons is lying here.

"But
we are grateful that God used him over the years to work for humanity, for
peace. Today, as he lies here, he has finished his work."

Annan's
nephew Kojo Amoo-Gottfried read a eulogy, describing how he had led a hunger
strike in his secondary school to protest against the quality of food in the
dining hall.

Annan’s
widow, Swedish lawyer and artist Nane Maria Annan gave a moving tribute and described how her husband was always excited to return home.

thanked Ghana for giving the world such an extraordinary man.

"His legacy would live on through his foundation

Annan was

awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 for helping to revitalise the
international body, during a period that coincided with the Iraq War and the
HIV/Aids pandemic.

He died
on 18 August in Switzerland at the age of 80.

Here are nine mouth mothering dishes from Ghana you should try at least once before you die.

Originally from Senegal, Jollof is a pot dish of rice prepared with tomato sauce and served with meat or fish.

The rice soaks up the juicy flavours and turns orange when cooking, and is a national favourite that can be found in most restaurants or dished out by street vendors at affordable prices.

Jollof is so delicious that no one wants one country to claim its sole right and as a result, the dish normally stirs plenty of juicy debate online with different nationalities from West Africa all claiming the sole rights of the dish.

Waakye (pronounced wa-chayy) is another Ghanaian delicious dish that will leave you licking your fingers.

It is made from rice and beans and was originally a Northern dish, but it can now be found almost everywhere on the streets of Accra.

You can enjoy Waakye with other sides such as fried plantain, garri (grated cassava), spaghetti and avocado.

Banku and tilapia

Ghanaians generally love fish and tilapia in particularly.

When you see fish being grilled on the streets of Accra it is most likely to be tilapia, a delicacy among Ghanaians, who spice then grill the succulent freshwater fish.

It goes hand in hand with banku, a Southern mix of fermented corn and cassava dough, and very hot pepper, diced tomatoes and onions.

This is one of the Ghanaian dishes that doesn’t use a lot of spice because the main taste comes from the ingredients it’s served with.

Red-red is a filling traditional dish that consists of cowpea beans boiled to make a broth, served with palm oil and soft, fried plantains.

It can also be dished up with garri to make it even heartier.

Fufu and goat light soup

Fufu is a staple food across West Africa but in Ghana, it is made by pounding a mixture of boiled cassava and plantains into a soft sticky paste to go along with aromatic and spicy tomato soup.

Tuo Zaafi is similar to banku, although it is quite soft and less sticky, and is made by cooking corn dough and adding a little cassava.

What distinguishes Tuo Zaafi and makes it a popular meal nationwide is the nutritious and rare herbs used in making the accompanying soup, including dawadawa and ayoyo leaves.

Palm nut soup (Abe Nkwan)

Palm nut soup is a rich soup made from fresh palm nuts that is loved not just in Ghana but West Africa; Nigerians even have their own version which they call Banga soup.

The nuts are boiled, pounded to extract the juice from the nut’s meat, the process is without a doubt daunting but the end result is worth every drop of sweat.

Palm nut soup can be eaten with Omutuo (rice balls) or Kokonte.

Boiled yam or plantain with Kontomire stew

The highly nutritious Kontomire stew is made from boiled tender cocoyam leaves, salted fish and boiled eggs, and goes perfectly with boiled yams, plantains and avocado.

No list of traditional Ghanaian foods would be complete without mentioning this savoury side dish.

Kelewele is an instant favourite among anyone who tries it, even those who aren’t big fans of peppery food.

It is made by frying soft plantains that have been soaked in a medley of peppers, ginger and garlic.

It is usually sold as a snack or side dish all over Accra.

“I identify most with his growth in the move and that his dreams are similar to what most coders have. This movie is loved and hated in equal measure but one thing all parties agree on is that it is a good movie which is thought provocative and leaves you with more questions than answers.

<h1>Barely days after being released from a filthy cell in Uganda, Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu popularly known as Bobi Wine, has been named one of 100 most influential young Africans.</h1>

The musician turned lawmaker who is currently undergoing specialised treatment in the United States, was arrested last month and charged with treason on suspicion he was involved in the alleged stoning of President Yoweri Museveni’s car.

"They wrapped me in a thick piece of cloth and bundled me into a vehicle. Those guys did to me unspeakable things in that vehicle! They pulled my manhood and squeezed my testicles while punching me with objects I didn’t see.

"I continued to groan in pain and the last I heard was someone hit me at the back of the head with an object," Kyagulanyi said in a 3,611 word statement he posted on his social media accounts after landing in US.

His continued detention however drew international attention with a number of international musicians, activists and politicians calling for his immediate release and condemning his mistreatment by the Ugandan government.

He was released on bail before being re-arrested while trying to leave the country to seek medical treatment. He was subsequently allowed to depart.

Prince Akpah urged other young Africans to emulate the footstep of the listed individuals and join them to make Africa a better and safer place for young dreamers.

Other notable African who made it to the list include; Togo’s Farida Bemba Nabourema, Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, Nigeria’s Davido, Guinea’s ABD Traore, Kenya’s Xtian Dela, South Africa’s Cassper Nyovest and Tanzania’s Alikiba.

Youngest duos on the list include Musician Nasty C from South Africa and Nigeria’s Social Entrepreneur, Wadi Ben-Hirki at 21 years.

Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana &amp; Tanzaania all lead the list with 20, 17, 12 and 8 representatives respectively.

While narrating the ordeal he underwent at the hands of Ugandan police, the lawmaker said that security officers beat him and squeezed his genitals until he lost consciousness.

The court case was widely seen as a test of will by the government of President Salva Kiir to bring accountability in the military that has long drawn accusations of widespread rights violations and a culture of impunity.

Eleven soldiers were on trial but one was set free due to the lack of charges leveled against him.

On Thursday, a South Sudanese military court sentenced the 10 soldiers for their involvement in the 2016 assault on a hotel in Juba that left one local journalist dead and several foreign aid workers brutally raped.

The two leaders resumed diplomatic ties and even opened embassies in Asmara and Addis Ababa to further boost cooperation.

Following the peaceful negotiations, Ethiopian Airlines begun flights to Asmara, and the two nations even agreed to stage a friendly football match.
