And in the times of COVID-19, more men might be turning to that option. In the last month, weve added over 1,100 new clients and have been up 600% in orders, says Shortcut co-founder Will Newton, which translates to about 3,000 appointments in the 25 cities Shortcut barbers currently service. <h1> Why Get Your Haircut At Home? </h1>

On the surface, getting your haircut at home is all about convenience. Like Postmates or Netflix, its about getting something exactly when you want it without needing to put on real pants. If youre going to be home, your barber can just come whenever, says Ben Chait, whose barber has come to cut his hair at home several times. You dont have to deal with the theatrics of going somewhere. It feels like a luxury.

But as a pandemic still rages outside our doors, there are very real concerns beyond securing an appointment and getting yourself to the shop. Even though barber shops have social distancing regulations, [some people] still dont feel safe going in them with so many people around, says Newton. They feel safer being able to control the space theyre in. Going to a barber shop could seem like a crap shoot; contract tracing is difficult in even the most well-regulated public areas and how many other people are following mask and social distance guidelines is often out of your control.

Its especially concerning to certain people who are immunocompromised or at high risk of contracting the virus, who Newton notes make up a good chunk of Shortcuts new clients. Ive been trying to avoid any kind of interactions that arent absolutely necessary; I dont even go in stores, says Jason Noble, who chose to use Shortcut because his inherited autoimmune disorder puts him at increased risk of contracting COVID-19. I just dont want to expose myself to any unneeded risk.

<h1> Is It Safer To Have a Barber Cut Your Hair in Your Home? </h1>

It depends, says William C. Miller, MD, MPH, PhD, senior associate dean of research and professor at The Ohio State University College of Public Health. The advantage of having a barber come to your house is that you limit your exposure to that one person, so in theory, it would be safer.

But ultimately, Dr. Miller is quick to note, it comes down to the behavior of the barber and their other clients. Its important to realize that this person will have been exposed to all the other people they have taken care of, so having the barber come to your home has some risk, he says. Just like at a barbershop, even if safety precautions are being enforced, you have no way of knowing who your barber has been exposed to before he cuts your hair. Finally, its important to consider whats going on locally, continues Dr. Miller. If there havent been any cases in your county for some time, it will be much safer than if your county has a rapidly increasing case count.

<h1> Dont Expect Relaxed Safety Measures With an In-Home Haircut </h1>

In fact, expect stricter ones. In the instance of Shortcut, which has barbers across multiple states, the company has developed a strict protocol that uses the national <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/" id="f1f01dfe-0637-371a-a834-5deb3b7c7c2f"> Centers for Disease Control </a> (CDC) as a template, not the individual states guidelines. That means that depending on what state youre in, the safety measures your at-home barber takes could be more than what you may encounter in a barber shop.

Shortcut developed its protocol by giving in-hospital haircuts to frontline workers during the height of the pandemic, so all the pros have to go through extensive training about what it means to be safe, says Newton. Shortcuts training includes daily temperature checks for barbers, making sure they have and use the appropriate PPE, and training them in proper sanitation techniques. And safety doesnt just fall on the barbers. Shortcut requires clients to answer COVID-related questions (like whether they have symptoms) and sign a waiver.

Working with an individual barber, or another on-demand service, may have different protocols, but the top priority of an in-home haircut should always be safety. Getting your haircut at home is not a way to get around safety precautionsits a way to have more control over whether theyre enforced. Follow these steps before and during your at-home cut to make sure you have the best, and safest, experience possible.

Look for specific references to the safety measures the barber took and whether clients were satisfied with them (or if youre getting a word of mouth reference, ask about safety point blank). Newton has noticed that reviews on Shortcut have organically started to include ratings on pandemic-related precautions and its made the user experience better. I chose my barber because several people listed in the reviews section that he had a very, very detailed and thorough cleaning and disinfecting process, says Noble. It made me feel comfortable contacting him.

<h1> 2. Have A Conversation With Your Barber Before They Arrive to Your Home </h1>

The major concern [with an in-home haircut] is whether the barber has followed the same strict protocols in every home that they normally would in a shop, says Dr. Miller. Ask right up front what precautions they take, if they ever allow a client to take their mask off, and if they also work in a shop. Whatever barber you choose, even if you know them well, do not wait to have this conversation till they arrive at your door. On Shortcut, clients are required to use the chat function to speak with the barber directly before booking. And yes, that means the barber may not be able to give you a beard trim, even in your own home. Ask about a beard trim up front and dont be surprised if they say no. If youre booking through an app like Shortcut, youll likely be advised on how to sanitize your space. If youre not, be prepared to help with cleanup. Cleaning and sanitizing your space before the barber arrives is fine, but not necessary, says Dr. Miller, but you absolutely need to sanitize afterward. The good thing is that you have the power to clean your home exactly how you want, unlike in a barber shop. Your barber will likely disinfect his tools and sweep up before he leaves, but once hes gone, you should wipe down surfaces and wash towels immediately.

<h1> 6. Remember Its A Two-Way Street </h1>

Just like youre choosing to get your haircut at home to feel safer and more comfortable, the barber needs to feel comfortable, too. That means you need to follow the rules they set, because theyre trained to protect you. And if youre not willing to follow them, they have the power to decline. An in-home haircut is not a loophole. We have the ability to deny the appointment if a person has been exposed to the virus or if they havent been cleared by their doctor to receive essential services, says Johnson. Once the barber arrives, theyll enforce the rules they set forward as well, so dont expect to forget your mask and still get your haircut.

There is always a price for convenience, and typically house call haircuts cost a little bit more than the cuts youll get in a shop. <h1> Is Toothpaste Good For Acne? </h1>

Just like traditional acne treatments, not all home remedies are created equal. Case in point: toothpaste. You may have heard that putting toothpaste on a zit dries it out fast, but thats an old wives tale. Toothpaste used to contain an ingredient called triclosan, which had anti-microbial properties, says dermatologist <a href="http://www.zeichnerdermatology.com/" id="75fde2fd-d4a8-3151-a9ed-9e6fdaf164e6"> Joshua Zeichner, MD, Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research, Department of Dermatology at Mount Sinai </a> . This ingredient, however, has been removed from most toothpaste because it is a relatively common cause of irritation. Toothpaste also contains foaming agents and sometimes whitening ingredients like hydrogen peroxide, which can further irritate skin. Effective home remedies should work to calm inflammation in the pimples instead of causing more of it.

When you start googling DIY skincare, you usually see lots of talk about oils like avocado and coconut. And while these oils could have skin benefits in other scenarios, Dr. Dhingra recommends steering clear of them when trying to treat acne. Ive had patients come in who are doing olive oil or coconut oil masks that were just adding fuel to the fire, he says. Its actually just adding extra oil into the pores and leads to more breakouts. Most effective acne treatments will work to remove some oil, as well as target bacteria and inflammation that can lead to breakouts.

Just like more traditional acne treatments, using home remedies requires patience. You dont do one set of crunches at the gym and expect to walk out with a six pack, right? The same goes for skincare, especially acne issues. Use a treatment consistently in order to see results and if your pimples are not improving in two to four weeks, schedule a visit with a board-certified dermatologist, says Dr. Zeichner.

There is some data to suggest that a crushed-up aspirin may help acne, according to Dr. Zeichner. Thats because aspiring contains an ingredient thats the cousin to salicylic acid, which is used often in more traditional acne treatments. While it does not remove excess oil like salicylic acid does, it can help calm inflammation. To use it as a spot treatment, crush up a tablet or two of aspirin and mix it with water to form a paste. Then apply it as a spot treatment to the pimple youre attacking.

Honey, especially manuka honey, has both skin protecting and antimicrobial benefits, says Dr. Zeichner. It may help lower levels of acne-causing bacteria and soothe skin inflammation. To use it, he recommends adding it into another ingredient, like yogurt, or you can dab it straight-up onto a pimple as a spot treatment. Use it sparingly and dont smear it all over your full face. It will leave you sticky, he says.

Tea tree oil has actually been studied for its natural <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK92761/" id="c922c9ce-fe27-3e83-af72-ce0b6aac4464"> antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties </a> , similar to more-potent benzoyl peroxide. Youll often even find it as an ingredient in more traditional skincare for this exact reason. Tea tree oil in its pure form, however, can be harsh and irritating on the skin. Instead temper it with water or a carrier oil like jojoba oil and dab it on your pimples as a spot treatment.

You may want to wash your face again half an hour later if the smell bothers you, he says.

Spray sunscreens often have a filmy feeling, like youre covered in Saran wrap. Even some light weight formulas still feel uncomfortable.

Most dudes only care about sunscreen when theyre at the beach. The holy grail of sunscreen is one that offers you effective protection when youre purposefully in the sun, but is comfortable enough to wear every day, especially in the summer when were all walking around in tank tops and shorts.

This stuff is like nothing Ive ever used before. Dont get it twisted with tanning oil (which is really, really bad for you), this has broad spectrum UV protection (which means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays) and SPF 50. For the record: <a href="https://www.aad.org/media/stats/prevention-and-care/sunscreen-faqs" id="58897657-6963-3645-a664-d26ede080ade"> the American Academy of Dermatology </a> recommends a minimum SPF of 30, but since most people dont apply sunscreen exactly right, higher protection can be beneficial.

Neither of those things are special to this formula. What blew me away about this specific sunscreen is that its completely weightless. It goes on like a body oil and within minutes is completely soaked into my skin. There is absolutely no residue to be seen or felt. It doesnt leave your skin greasy or oily feeling either. Its packed with moisturizing ingredients, like meadowfoam seed and grapeseed oils, that makes my skin feel more like I just used a fancy skin cream than coconut-scented glop. Speaking of that scent, its natural but not overwhelming, so I dont feel like I got doused in a pia colada.

Before the natural sunscreen watchdogs come for me, let me say this: it is not a mineral sunscreen (which means it uses chemicals like avobenzone to absorb UV rays instead of reflecting it). Thats why all sorts of famous dudes have started to rock mustaches. Whether its a full-Selleck like Henry Cavill in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and country crooner Mark Wystrach of Midland or a more subtle stache-scruff combo like Zac Efron and Michael B. Jordan, they know that the power of the mustache lies in its unexpected quality.

The other reason youre probably seeing more mustaches lately (and why theyre looking more and more appealing) is because its about to get damn hot. Think about it: whats more seasonally appropriate than a full beard, but still gives a little face cover? A mustache. For this summer, were talking about a specific kind of stache, what barber Mr. Natty of calls the Lifeguard Mustache. Its very well groomed and a little shorter, he says. It doesnt have twiddly bits on the end.

Growing a mustache is easier than youd think. If you have a beard, youre already halfway there. Trimming and maintaining your new mustache is even easier. Heres how to do it.

Just about anyone can grow a mustache, even if your beard is patchy, according to Mr. Natty, who has noticed more and more of his clients sporting staches. The first rule of mustache growing is to be really bold about it, he says. Decide youre going to do it and just unapologetically go for it.

The easiest way is to grow a bit of a beard first, he says. Once you get to your desired length, shape your beard down shorter [than your mustache]. You can do this gradually, each time cutting your beard closer and leaving the mustache alone, so you can see the shape and get used to the look. Eventually you can take the rest of your beard down to stubble or shave it clean off. This method is less jarring and avoids that awkward, dusty Babys First Mustache vibe (or, as were calling it now, the ).

Compared to caring for a beard, mustache maintenance is a summer vacation. The most important thing is to keep the shape, so shave or clip around it often. Make sure the sides dont wander off and start creeping down the face like The Village People, says Mr. Natty. You want a soft pyramid shape, going from the edges of your nose to the corners of your mouth and no farther.

Then keep the length in check. Trimming a mustache is not nearly as time consuming as trimming a beard. Trim it just on the lip line, says Mr. Natty. It looks ghastly if you trim too high.

If this sounds too complicated to you, Mr. Natty recommends finding a few pictures of mustaches you like (might we suggest scrolling back up) and taking them to your barber. Ask your barber to cut in that shape and then all you have to do is maintain it, instead of doing it yourself from scratch.

<h1> The Best Products for Mustache Grooming </h1>

The final step in mustache maintenance is keeping it groomed, but even that is pretty freaking easy. The golden rule is: less is more. Stay away from beard oils and shaping waxes and anything that is going to make your stache look shiny or oily. All you need is a <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/grooming/g25835043/best-beard-balms/" id="384f3053-f5b9-309e-ad55-9b74383ec433"> beard balm </a> , says Mr. Natty. Think of balms like a matte pomade for your face and look for lightweight balms with moisturizing ingredients to benefit both the hair and the skin underneath.

Here's How to Grow the Perfect Mustache for Summer

Crumb Catcher. Mouth Brow. Soup Strainer. Whatever you call a mustache, its time you actually grew one. Mustaches are trending hard right now and honestly, they look damn cool. Theres something inherently masculine about a hairy upper lip, especially in a retro lothario kind of way (case in point: Tom Selleck and Burt Reynolds, mustache icons of the 1970s). Wearing a mustache takes confidence and swagger, but can also give more of both of those things.

Every single one of us should be getting a pedicure on a regular basis and Im not just saying that because I personally love them. According to podiatrist Charlton Woodly, DPM, regular foot care is important for your overall health. A lot of diseases actually manifest themselves in the feet, he says. If you dont take care of your feet, and you lose the ability to walk without pain, it can really impede your life.

Those diseases range from the uncomfortable to the life-threatening. Fungal infection, for instance, can cause your toenails to become discolored or even fall off. Ingrown toenails can lead to bacterial infection or painful open lesions. Athletes foot can lead to itching, blisters, and pain. Some people can even develop dangerous skin cancers like melanoma and basal cell carcinoma (which can be deadly if left untreated).

Regular foot care can help prevent and control foot-related health issues and keep your feet looking sandal-ready in the process. Heres what to do.

A casual inspection in the shower is enough. What youre looking for is anything different or weird, like changes in toenail color, redness, bumps, or blisters. Always check between the toes, says Dr. Woodly. Make sure youre drying between them and dont leave creams or lotions between them either, since fungus and bacteria thrive in moist environments. If you notice something strange, call your doctor before trying to deal with it yourself.

Always be aware of where you are walking barefoot, especially on carpet, says Dr. Woodly. Carpets can hide tiny objects that you can step on and hurt your feet. And if you have cuts or open sores, carpets hold bacteria that can cause infection.

<h1> Cut Your Toenails Straight Across </h1>

Dr. Woodly advises to never cut too deep into the corners, since that could potentially cause an ingrown situation leading to infection. Always cut them straight across and not too short. Your toenails should go right to wear the skin ends, he says.

<h1> Use a Pumice Stone to Remove Calluses Safely </h1>

Rough, dry calluses arent nice to look at, but usually dont mean anything bad. Theyre just dead skin on top of dead skin, says Dr. Woodly, and are usually caused by pressure from a bony prominence or from a shoe or some other type of irritation. They can be painful if left unchecked, so you should remove them regularly. Over-the-counter callus removal patches (which contain dead-skin eating acid) can do more harm than good if you dont use them as directed and graters like the Ped Egg can cut too deep if youre not careful. Dr. Woodly prefers the regular use of a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Pumice-Phogary-Pedicure-Remover/dp/B07HHS38T9/ref=sr_1_3" id="97eda3aa-551c-39b2-af41-2212090700cb"> pumice stone </a> to exfoliate feet and gently remove built-up dead skin.

A pedicure is the most effective way to maintain foot hygiene and keep your hooves looking fresh. A professional who works on feet regularly can identify any serious issues much better than you can. Plus, theres nothing as uniquely relaxing as getting a professional job.

Depending on how fast your toenails grow, you can get a pedicure as often as you want, as long as its done safely. The average person should get one at least once a month, says Dr. Woodly, but more power to you if you want to go more often. To make sure the place youre going is good, make sure they always use tools from a new, unopened package for each procedure, that you can clearly see the license of the person performing your treatment, and they should never attempt to cut out or remove an ingrown toenail (its not in their scope of practice, he says.)

<h1> You Can Give Yourself a Pedicure </h1>

If you cant find an hour out of your schedule to get a professional pedicure, youre missing out. But you can do it yourself if youre so inclined. Heres how.

1. Soak your feet for at least 10 minutes in warm water and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Epsoak-Everyday-Epsom-Salts-Cleanse/dp/B01KW2Z0HI/ref=sr_1_20" id="99ac77a5-8219-3068-a118-56d163cddae3"> Epsom salts </a> . This will help soften and hydrate dead skin and dry patches for easier removal.
