Captain Marvel opens March 8, the first MCU film to feature a woman in a lead superhero role and the first with a woman behind the camera (Anna Boden, alongside her usual filmmaking cohort Ryan Fleck). It is, in the context of blockbusters and comic book movies, a historic production, following 2017's Wonder Woman in the pursuit of widening superhero ecosystems to make room for inclusion. For Larson, it's a departure from the scope of her normal milieu: Indie films like The Spectacular Now, Short Term 12 and Room, which left her with a Best Actress trophy in hand after the 88th Academy Awards, as well as comedies like Trainwreck, 21 Jump Street, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Showtime's United States of Tara.

Grant that Larson isn't a stranger to tentpoles; in 2017, she joined the ensemble of Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Kong: Skull Island as journalist Mason Weaver. Grant also that Kong: Skull Island did not require Larson be strong enough to push <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a26304544/brie-larson-captain-marvel-workout-jeep-push-twitter/" id="5e19e9fa-1765-3e8a-acf2-70b8425a0bdc"> a goddamn Jeep </a> by her lonesome. Co-starring with a colossal ape makes weight training a low priority. But Marvel hired her to play a superhero, and along the way from the studio to press tours to multiplexes, she became an actual superhero.

Molding a body into peak physical condition is serious business. Larson, working with trainer Jason Walsh, parceled out her training over nine months, trying variations on hip thrusts, push-ups, and Bulgarian split squats, adding deadlifts and pull-ups for upper body strength.

Larson's hard work on her physique pays off in Captain Marvel on screen; she looks terrific, lean and sinewy, a marriage between grace and fortitude. But there's another component of Larson's Captain Marvel training that's equally as important as the nuts and bolts of getting straight-up ripped: The mental component. Larson informs her character, Carol Danvers-a.k.a. the Kree noble warrior hero "Vers"-through psychological preparation. Carols a rebel. Larson began her Captain Marvel journey as " <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a25394148/brie-larson-captain-marvel-training/" id="19518faf-ac2c-3f5e-af3c-308e4c0d1bdc"> a brain </a> ," rejecting emphasis placed on her body. Now she does push-ups with chains tangled about her waist. That takes discipline, a quality Vers lacks. Put kindly, shes unruly; less kindly, she's "emotional", the favorite word of her mentor Yon-Rogg (Jude Law). Yon-Rogg's training takes special aim at Vers' self-control; he wants to keep her superpowers in check. Larson's not as fun to watch in that capacity. The cooler and more collected she must be to suit a scene, the worse off the movie is. But Vers wants to go off and blast holes in spaceships with her fiery energy projections, and when she ultimately rejects Yon-Roggs' spartan coaching, Larson's and Walsh's training dogma is fully realized on screen. Have a good time. Otherwise, what's the point?

The theme of identity crisis spans Captain Marvel as a production and a story. Vers isn't the "real" Carol Danvers; its just the persona foisted on her by Yon-Rogg after rescuing her from death and taking her into the Krees ranks as one of their own. The real Carol Danvers is the character we get to know toward the second half of the film leading into the climax, where she truly begins pushing her powers boundaries. When she realizes she can actually fly, she smiles like the cat that ate the canary; her joy at this moment of self-discovery is palpable. Vers' sobriety reflects Larson's approach to her physical transformation, but Danvers' glee reflects Larson's training philosophy writ large.

As a movie, Captain Marvel is a mixed bag. On one hand, jarring, over-aggressive 1990s nostalgia pollutes the whole enterprise, the musical queues in particular, designed for maximum winking, nudging, and pandering; on the other, Samuel L. Jackson, playing young Nick Fury, is a hoot, playing a best-of compilation of the sidekick roles he took in the film's chosen decade, while Ben Mendelsohn, playing the shapeshifting Skrull Talos, reaffirms that he's one of the most vital actors working today.

For her part, Larson's overqualified for the script, not a knock against her but rather a nod toward her consummate professionalism. She could have left the dangerous stuff to a stuntwoman, but that's not her speed. After all, Marvel films don't shoot action for action's sake; MCU fight scenes tend to be about character more than choreography, showcasing their stars' personalities instead of staging cutting edge action. Larson seizes every chance to let her character, and her aesthetic, shine.

Captain Marvel Review: How Brie Larson's Training Shaped Carol Danvers

Earlier this year, news emerged that Captain Marvel would have <a href="https://www.highsnobiety.com/p/captain-marvel-post-credits-scenes/" id="9e1f188b-f9c9-34e8-a680-c55965997cf0"> not one, but two post-credits scenes </a> ( <a href="https://bgr.com/2019/03/07/captain-marvel-post-credits-scenes-leaked-what-they-mean-for-endgame/" id="f571278c-f016-3680-ab29-3ee2d3a1a40b"> both of which were leaked </a> in the lead-up to the film's March 8 release). Whether you've seen the movie already or not, you might be wondering: What goes down in those two Captain Marvel post-credits scenes?

Life in a post-apocalypse means bleak times for the survivors, even in the colorful world of the MCU, recently afflicted by a case of global death and destruction in last years Avengers: Infinity War. Now, the remaining characters-those who did not get raptured and turned into ash clouds by Thanos with an actual snap of his fingers-must live with the consequences of the Decimation, the moniker given to the Mad Titans selfish act of wanton havoc. In short: Its pretty grim and unbelievably depressing.

So when Captain Marvel, the new Marvel film leading into this Aprils Avengers: End Game, comes to a joyful close-with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) defeating her erstwhile Kree allies after discovering their fondness for xenophobic race supremacy-the first post-credits scene wraps things up on a major bummer note: With Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johanson), James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), communing about the communicator Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) activated just before his own death in Infinity War.

Theyre all understandably glum, shaken by their defeat and traumatized by the deaths of their friends. That flashing communication device is their only hope in the Decimation. Granted, theyre not even sure who its communicating with, but theyre willing to take whatever hope they can get. But after all their efforts at keeping the device powered and running, it loses its juice and goes dark. Then, Romanoff turns around and finds herself face to face with Danvers, who asks the most important question she can possibly think of: Wheres Fury?

Captain Marvel sends viewers off with a humorous post-credits scene long after the earlier stinger, with Goose, Jacksons adopted kitty (actually an alien, but whatever) barfing up the tesseract on Furys desk at S.H.I.E.L.D. (Its a long story.) But the gravity of the first post-credits scene gives an idea of what End Games tone looks like: Bereaved melancholy abruptly undercut by the sudden arrival of a savior. Heroes deserve a proper retirement, but American moviegoers cant let our nostalgic faves take a break.

The film studio behind the movie, Lionsgate, confirmed that the last (?) chapter of the Rambo series will hit theaters later this year.

For Rambo fans, or all-around Sylvester Stallone fans, the recent spate of Rambo 5 news may come as a shock. Having spent the better part of the last two decades trading on his '80s action star image - appearing in the Expendables films, Bullet to the Head, Escape Plan, and 2008s Rambo - Stallone circled back toward respectability in 2015s Creed, reprising his most famous role, Rocky Balboa, in Ryan Cooglers Rocky spin-off (and sequel to 2006s Rocky Balboa). Creed earned Stallone his third Academy Award nomination, his first since the original Rocky in 1976; youd maybe expect him to try for a fourth by sticking with Rocky as he shuffles through the late stages of his career.

Sylvester Stallone In 'Rambo: First Blood Part II'

Youd be wrong. Stallone <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/fitness/a19562545/sylvester-stallone-creed-2-upper-body-workout/" id="6364c70e-ab0c-39a7-a391-65bed83a99ab"> appeared in </a> <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/fitness/a19562545/sylvester-stallone-creed-2-upper-body-workout/" id="6da5c027-d998-3d06-a745-5660aee49641"> Creed II </a> back in November, and hes currently at work on Rambo V (subtitle: Last Blood), shooting in Bulgaria and Spain. (Hes also making a third Escape Plan movie with Dave Bautista, but that feels less exciting.) Oddly enough, neither shooting location is Arizona, where the 2008 film left John off, or Mexico, which is where the storys taking him. Having walked away from the soldiers life in Rambo, Rambo V will see John getting back what he does best, namely indiscriminately killing bad guys who threaten good people.

Bad guys here means Mexican sex traffickers slash cartels, 2018s action movie bad guys du jour. (See: Peppermint.) Per the <a href="https://www.screendaily.com/sylvester-stallone-lining-up-rambo-v-exclusive/5128882.article" id="88997400-c741-3eb7-a455-7cf2a435a277"> synopsis </a> , When longtime family friend and estate manager Maria informs Rambo that her granddaughter has gone missing after crossing into Mexico for a party, he sets off with her to find the youngster. What ensues is a violent descent into hell as Rambo uncovers a sex-trafficking ring. He teams up with a journalist whose half-sister has also been kidnapped and must deploy all his skills to save the girls and bring down a vicious crime lord.

Paz Vega plays the journalist; Yvette Monreal plays her half-sister; Adriana Barraza plays Maria; Sergio Peris-Mencheta plays the vicious crime lord. Adrian Grunberg will direct.

The basic structure of Rambo V is perfectly Rambo, and the choice in villain is perfectly American action film, because American action films have a way of picking heavies based on whatever foreign countries the U.S. has political friction with at the time of production.

But John Rambo tends to fight for the disenfranchised or the neglected, and he tends to fight reluctantly. If Rambo V wants to layer that structure with a topical issue, so be it, though frankly itd be more interesting to see Farmer Rambo take issue with tariffs or climate change denial and get back to defying the establishment like he used to. (Itd certainly be more satisfying. Rambo 08 is a film of gory delights, but strong white guy takes out scores of brown people is an overtired and thunderously dull genre cliche.)

Maybe, post-Creed, Stallone will do with Rambo what he did with Rocky, and play him as a character rather than as a caricature. Theres distinct pleasure to gain from watching Stallone give his characters a foundation and respect their humanity. Using one of the great American genres, the Western, as Rambo Vs backdrop might encourage that kind of performance. And if not, well...hell always have Creed.

But however you know Popeye, you know Popeye. You know him by his oversized forearms. You know his anchor tattoo. You know his coarse mannerisms and gravelly accent, the consequence of a lifetime spent smoking a pipe. Most of all you know that he is strong to the finish explicitly because his diet is rich in spinach, that leafy green vein of iron. No wonder he's got such a mean right hook. He's got metal flowing through his fists.

Popeye's a colorful icon of masculine identity, and has been for almost a century; the surly old salt just enjoyed his 90th birthday on January 17th this year. Even at that age he retains all of his punchy, pulpy vitality, but of course with age comes change and even evolution. No macho icon stays the same forever. <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/g25702622/arnold-schwarzenegger-movies-list/" id="e2c86f0b-b335-3a52-aa5a-7bbcdc47714d"> Arnold Schwarzenegger popped up </a> in buddy comedies and kid films all over the 1990s. Bruce Willis took a sadsack role in one of Wes Anderson's deadpan classics. After a while, even the toughest guys soften up, if only just.

And that's okay! Close your eyes and think of Popeye right now. Picture him in your mind's eye. What do you see? Likely something along these lines:

Come to that, who is Popeye without his lady love, his main squeeze, Olive Oyl, that tall, gangly, beloved symbol of femininity and feminine authority? She's the beacon of light that has routinely, over the years, led the otherwise curmudgeonly Popeye toward civility, or as close to civility as a guy like Popeye can get. So maybe when you picture Popeye, you can't help picturing Olive Oyl, too; he's saved her from harm more times than anyone can count, after all:

They're a cute pair. Too cute. Like any couple, though, they have their problems:

And like any couple, their don't always have the best communication:

If the last two strips jump off the page differently than the rest, that's because they are, respectively, drawn by David Reddick and Jeffrey Brown, and they're two original pieces of art introduced for the resurrected "Popeye's Cartoon Club." Back in Popeye's younger days, E.C. Segar, Popeye's creator, made a habit of sharing artwork produced by fans at the end of his Thimble Theater comic strip, the stage on which Popeye made his debut; he liked giving his readers the chance to share space with his own creation. Segar was that kind of dude.

January 17th, Popeye's actual birthday, saw the return of this lovely inclusive tradition on <a href="http://comicskingdom.com/" id="c24cb33f-e5bb-33fc-ab2f-5090ff2b4795"> </a> <a href="http://comicskingdom.com/" id="b0421e36-2909-313f-a811-b3fa0b779cd3"> Comics Kingdom </a> , which, in 2019, expands considerably on Segar's intent by allowing artists in 2019 a forum for presenting their own contemporary takes on Popeye's representation. For Reddick, that means Popeye occasionally steps in it with an unintended but nevertheless backhanded compliment; fellas, never compare your better half to a leafy green. For Brown, that means men are from Mars and women are from Venus; ladies, wonder as much as you like about what's on your man's mind, but be warned that he probably ain't thinking any profound thoughts.

Which probably explains why his wardrobe is stuck in the 1930s:

It's the 21st century, Popeye! Men wear scarves and quarters socks and skinny jeans now! They even wear skinny overalls! They cut their hair with side parts and fades! They use makeup! They put oil in their beards! Get with the program! Or maybe don't, because hipster culture being what it is, all things retro are now current. Leave it the Fab Five steering Netflix's Queer Eye For the Straight Guyrevival-being Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness, Bobby Berk, Tan France, and Karamo Brown-to single out Popeye's 1930s look as the hot new trend for men's fashion. Of course. How modern!

Nothing says "2019" like getting emojis inked over your brawniest bits! It is, as Popeye puts it, "lit." They're not even matching emojis: One's sad, and one's blushing. What that's supposed to mean for Popeye is entirely in the eye of the beholder. Maybe one forearm's bashful and the other's clinically bummed out?

But not every Cartoon Club strip reimagines Popeye through today's pop culture. Some of them just stick with the character's history, paying tribute to his roots, however much they defy continuity. Once upon a time, for instance, Popeye didn't get strength from chowing down on spinach; instead, he got "luck" from giving Bernice the Whiffle Hen's head hairs a gentle scratch. Spinach didn't come into the strip until 1932. What artist Jay Fosgitt presupposes is that maybe Bernice and spinach have an unspoken, and kind of weird, and not all that sanitary connection.

As a bonus reference, here's Erica Henderson resurrecting Ham Gravy, full name Harold Hamgravy, Olive Oyl's original suitor before Popeye entered her life; Hamgravy had a wandering eye, a fondness for women of means, and an aversion to honest work, which handily explains Olive eventually turning toward her affections to Popeye. Fun fact: Hamgravy originally hired Popeye as captain of his ship for a treasure hunt. See how well that worked out for him? Not only was Popeye more popular than Hamgravy as a character, he wound up getting the girl, too.

Henderson adds a slice of modernity here, with Popeye and Olive caught up in a mob of paparazzi snapping photos and begging for interviews. What's very much in keeping with the strip's history is Hamgravy being passed by and ignored by Popeye's and Olive's fawning public.

And Carol Lay, too, sticks to that history with her own strip, the only one of the group to capture Popeye in his element: Socking dudes in the gob in defense of a woman's honor. Grant that the woman isn't Olive Oyl, and instead a total stranger, but Popeye doesn't suffer jerks gladly no matter who they're bothering, and besides: He's always ready to punch men very hard if they dare upset her. That's how we best think of Popeye anyway-as the well-muscled mariner, the fightingest rough ever to grace the funny pages, even at 90 years young.

A Modern Take on Popeye for His 90th Birthday

You might know Popeye the Sailor from trawling YouTube for clips of theatrical cartoons from between the 1930s and the 1950s. You might know him from the handful of television series' built around him: 1960's Popeye the Sailor, 1978's The All New Popeye Hour, 1987's Popeye and Son. You might even know him from Robert Altman's terrific 1980 live action musical, Popeye, starring the late comic legend Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. Or maybe you know Popeye through pop culture osmosis and ref...

What's vexing about the omission of female filmmakers from the Best Picture and Best Director categories has as much to do with the content of the movies nominated as it does with behind-the-scenes talent: With minor variations and few exceptions, each nominee up for the top prize is about men, Great Men, men with the weight of the world on their shoulders or the lifelong burden of identity on their minds, perhaps both. Vice, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman, and even Black Panther are each shaped predominantly by male characters searching for power, prestige, personality, or just personhood. Maybe it follows that they'd be directed by men-which, of course, they all are.

But that's casual misogynist bunk: The best movies of 2018 to roll up their sleeves and get elbow-deep in macho gray matter all happen to be directed by women. Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here, Debra Granik's Leave No Trace, and Chlo Zhao's The Rider cut to the core of male identity, sans the pomp of awards-bait pictures and with greater precision than the actual best movies in the Best Picture category. No disrespect to BlacKkKlansman or Black Panther; no hate for Roma, which, female lead aside, also contains sharp insights into male behavioral health. It's not that these movies are bad, or bad explorations of masculinity. Rather, it's that Ramsays, Graniks, and Zhao's movies outclass them.

Each is also its own beast. You Were Never Really Here captures the sensation of living in someone else's waking nightmare with soul-rattling confidence. Leave No Trace inhabits the experience of struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, for both the afflicted and the outside observer. And The Rider asks what compels men to push themselves beyond their limits in pursuit of a dream they can't let go of. Trauma is the common thread binding the trio. These filmmakers put it under a microscope. Theyre tender, careful not to mishandle that trauma, but just as determined to do it justice on the screen.

Of the three, Leave No Trace strikes the gentlest chord. The film unfolds in a public park in Portland, Oregon, where Iraq War veteran Will (Ben Foster) lives off the land with his daughter Tom (Thomasin McKenzie), until authorities discover them, put them into social services, and attempt to relieve Will of his suffering. His PTSD drives the plot, but Granik fuels his story with the kindness of strangers.

You Were Never Really Here goes in the opposite direction: Ramsay, adapting the Jonathan Ames novella, throws hitman tropes on the hearth and douses them with gasoline. She cares about her protagonist, Joe (Joaquin Phoenix), as Granik cares about Will, but Ramsay's film is considerably more merciless. Joe, like Will, wrestles with PTSD, the product of his Gulf War service and his career as an FBI field agent. He lives on society's edges, too, interacting solely with his mother (Judith Roberts) and his handler McCleary (John Doman). McCleary gives him work, each assignment a rescue mission for trafficked girls. Joe finds them, violently murders their kidnappers with a hammer, and brings them home safely. He's ferocious the way grizzly bears are ferocious defending their cubs.

The Rider falls between Leave No Trace and You Were Never Really Here as a portrait of masculine psychological stress, a reenactment of real-life events instead of whole-cloth fiction. Brady Blackburn is the main character, Brady Jandreau the actor playing him, but they both had the same career-ending accident: a skull fracture sustained at a rodeo. Another movie, and another director, mightve populated the story with professional actors. Zhao lets Jandreau, his family, and his friends tell their own stories, as Blackburn comes to terms with his new life restricted from riding. While Granik explores Will's identity removed from civilization and Ramsay explores Joe's removed from sanity, Zhao peers at Brady's identity divorced from his livelihood.

The damages dealt to Will, Joe, and Brady in these movies aren't specific to men, but the marriage of male subjects with female directors produces effects that might be otherwise missed. Hitman movies are cheap commodities. Less common are hitman movies so vested in their protagonists' mental stability. Every minute of You Were Never Really Here is spent in the endless cacophonous cycle that is Joe's anguish. His world is coated in horrors re-lived on street corners, in hotel rooms, in the house he shares with his mom. Joe's memories haunt him with each child he saves, every monster he kills. (It's not by accident that his favorite weapon is a hammer, the conduit for abuse he suffered as a boy.)

Joe can't escape his past. Neither can Will, but boy he tries: staying off the grid, teaching Tom how to forage for survival, occasionally selling painkillers given to him by the VA. When the state intervenes and places the two in a home, Will grows visibly uncomfortable over time. He absconds with Tom to trackless woods and they arrive at a figurative crossroads. She wants to stay among people. He can't, or won't, or both. Granik doesn't treat Will's reckless longing for solitude as noble. She sees him as tragic, neither judging nor rewarding his self-imposed isolation.

Brady, on the other hand, exists among his peers, though even in a crowded room he's not quite there. His impulses set him on a course of self-destruction. Doctors tell him not to ride. To compensate, he trains other riders and breaks in horses. He also keeps riding against orders, and pays for his stubbornness with a seizure. Zhao mines the clash between his limitations and his dreams. What's a cowboy without a horse and spurs? If Brady can't ride, what can he do? And what, ultimately, is he? The Rider dangles masculinity from a thread. Brady invests so much of himself in his profession that he'd rather risk dying than find the alternative. Maybe he's nobody. Maybe he's still a cowboy.

The Rider and Leave No Trace both echo past Oscar nominees. The Rider takes after Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler and Black Swan. Leave No Trace feels like the gracious cousin of Granik's 2010 film, Winter's Bone, nominated for four Academy Awards in 2011, including a Best Actress nod for Jennifer Lawrence that instantly made her Hollywood royalty. There's only one meaningful (and old) Academy precedent for You Were Never Really Here, Martin Scorseses Taxi Driver, but Ramsay's a master filmmaker, so precedent be damned.

These sterling movies share plenty with the Oscar favorites no one can stop talking about. Bradley Cooper interrogates male jealousy, boosted by alcoholism, over female success in A Star Is Born. Adam McKay studies power-hungry patriarchy in Vice. With Black Panther, Ryan Coogler shows viewers the pain that fatherless boys can carry with them into manhood.

Granik's, Zhao's, and Ramsay's films are, however, possessed of more skill than their male-helmed peers. If the Oscars must reward grizzly displays of dick-swinging, then they should at least reward those displays on egalitarian lines (a pipe dream, perhaps, but still). AMPAS has crept a small step closer to racial and ethnic parity with each year since April Reign's made fools of them in 2015 and yet again in 2016. In 2019, they've made the same glaringly dumb mistake in gender representation.

That'd be awkward in any year, but it's especially embarrassing today as demand for recognition of female talent gains urgency. Without the credits attached, however, these works stand on their own and deserve the same attention accorded to 2018s nominees, some equally as acclaimed, some much less so: You Were Never Really Here, The Rider, and Leave No Trace respectively clock in at 89 percent, 97 percent, and an astounding 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. (Box office is another disappointing matter; combined, they comprise a fraction of A Star Is Borns domestic gross, but the Academy finds plenty of other limited releases to champion.) These are supremely accomplished films by both objective and subjective measures. The Academys failure to acknowledge that is as much a dereliction of purpose as proof that the institution is out of touch with its own multifaceted industry.

Depending on how generous you want to be, their family dynamic is either unique or alarming. The film puts the real-life Bevis clan's loving pugilism on screen, casting Nick Frost as patriarch Patrick "Rowdy Rick Knight" Bevis; Lena Headey as Julia "Sweet Saraya" Bevis; Jack Lowden as Zak "Zodiac" Bevis; and Florence Pugh as Saraya "Paige" Bevis, two-time WWE Divas champion, general manager for WWE's SmackDown, and the first Women's Champion in NXT, the WWE's farm program, where young talent is nurtured through a regimen of bruising and beatings.

He knows that Fighting with My Family works better through dramatization, and that great drama demands a greater underdog. Pugh's winning blend of insouciance and poise-key to her work in movies like Lady Macbeth-emphasizes that underdog element, making her a young aspirant who's easy to root for. There's urgency to her performance that's mellowed out by Vaughn's coarse world-weariness. Together, they make Merchant's fictions more exciting than the truth. For a movie about wrestling, fake and yet at times more honest than the real world, that couldn't be more fitting.

Maybe the best proof of a documentarys success lies in how it changes the people who watch it. Hurley, directed by Derek Dodge and produced by Greys Anatomy alum and racing enthusiast Patrick Dempsey, has that transformative power. So does Haywoods wisdom. Granted, its easier being out in 2019 than it was in the 1970s and 1980s. Grant also that getting Hurley made even 10 years ago would have posed a greater challenge than getting it made today.

Thats certainly Haywoods thought, and hes the authority: Hes the winner of five Rolex 24 at Daytona endurance races, three 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance races, and two 12 Hours of Sebring endurance races, and he achieved these successes among many others as a gay man working within one of the most macho businesses on the planet.

Not that his sexual orientation ever held him back: I've been racing for over 40 years, says Haywood, speaking about the film as well as his career in a recent interview with Mens Health. Most people in the industry, I mean team owners and co-drivers, have known my sexuality and that's never been necessarily a problem. He cites one unnamed driver out of hundreds who refused to drive with him, but thats it. Maybe hes lucky. Anyone born during or after that time frame might be surprised to learn that the racing world accepted him at all, though perhaps acceptance comes more readily to those gifted enough to rise to the top of the field. LGBTQ acceptance today is a head and shoulders improvement over the acceptance given to LGBTQ communities decades ago, though there's still a ways to go.

Haywood expresses some doubt that making Hurley in 2009 would have been as easy as making it in 2019 (rather 2014, when Dodge approached Dempsey to ask his assistance in getting the film into production). It was difficult for people to come out 10 years ago or 15 years ago, Haywood explains, and it's easier for them to come out now because I think America has sort of grown and has been a much more accepting a country.

The movies, in Haywoods estimation, are a powerful tool for conveying a message and for changing hearts and minds. You might not agree today about the rights of the LGBT community, says Haywood, but maybe after you see the film, you might say, Maybe I misjudged these people and what these people can do. As far as Americas come in the last decade, the country has a ways to go yet; perhaps Hurley can help Americans walk that road. True, Hurley is one movie, and its a bit much to expect one movie to remedy ingrained anti-gay prejudice in the United States. But if the movie changes one persons mind, maybe its done its job.

Theres a moment in the new documentary Hurley where its subject, legendary race car driver Hurley Haywood, recalls a conversation he had with a gay high school senior several years ago; the young man was struggling with suicidal ideation, the product of a lifetime of bullying. But Haywoods spent his career thriving and achieving in a hyper-masculine environment, and he knows all about dealing with bullies, and so he called on his experiences in the racing world to help ease the teens soul.

34. Dave, 1993, Himself Heres the pitch: Dave (Kevin Kline), a loser running a temp agency in D.C., is conscripted by the Secret Service into posing as the President of the U.S. of A. (also Kevin Kline) to cover up POTUS extramarital activities. Dave, you see, has a side hustle impersonating the president, which of course makes him the ideal candidate for the job. Its a breezy enough film, charming and sweet like an Aero milk chocolate bar; call it harmless, really, because ultimately Dave functions as a two-hour respite from political reality, and its so lightweight that youll find yourself forgetting everything that happens in it even as you watch the thing unfold. It isnt the worst movie on this list, not by far, but Arnold, playing Arnold, pops up for not even a minute to discourage Kline and a bunch of kids from eating donuts. There's a question as to whether Dave belongs here at all. 33. Hercules in New York, 1969, Hercules So this is probably the worst movie on the list. Probably. Bad Schwarzenegger films get really bad, and if youre now smirking and raising an eyebrow and saying, Well, but Schwarzenegger has been in lots of bad movies! you likely havent seen Hercules in New York, which makes trash like Sabotage and Red Sonja look like fine cinema. Be fair to Arnie: This is his first movie, shot when he was just in his 20s, roughly a decade and a half before he took the roles that helped make him a star in the 1980s. Its Arnie before Arnie became Arnie. Hell, the movie doesnt even credit him by his name, instead going with Arnold Strong, undoubtedly because strong is just a tad easier to say than Schwarzenegger. And the studio dubbed over him, too! Imagine this thing from Arnolds point of view, and you cant help feeling for the guy. Heres his first starring role, his big break, and the powers that be crapped all over it. Tough way to get started in the industry. Maybe the films badness is a silver lining. Today, audiences dont know about it. Weve forgotten it. The Villain, 1979, Handsome Stranger Five years after Blazing Saddles parodied the Western genre (while also serving as a functional Western), along comes Hal Needhams The Villain, a movie of similar purpose but with none of Mel Brooks zany wit. Its about as blatant a rip on Brooks as one might imagine, all Western tropes and stereotypes with no real sense of humor, and any humor it does have, it wears out within seconds. I was named after my father, Arnold says any time a character remarks on his very specific name: Handsome Stranger. Scavenger Hunt, 1979, Lars The one joke accorded Schwarzenegger in this Michael Schultz screwball ensemble is, in all honesty, a pretty good one: In the biggest stretch of his career to date, Arnold plays a gym instructor whose sole role in the whole frigging movie is to knock Tony Randall out of a window with a single toss of a medicine ball. Thats it. Its not a bad joke! It actually works, in large part thanks to Arnolds large body and his unexpected comic timing, a gift he went on to make great use of over the course of his career. But the jokes punchline signals the end of his time on the screen, so its kind of hard to rank Scavenger Hunt any higher. It doesnt help that the movie is, in a word, crummy, two hours of scrubby craftsmanship that verges on homemade. 29. Red Sonja, 1985, Lord Kalidor What about Conan the Barbarian, but without any of the joy? sums up the essence of Red Sonja pretty handily. Richard Fleischers 1985 sword-and-sorcery movie is ostensibly a follow-up to 1982s Conan the Barbarian and 1984s Conan the Destroyer, but producer Dino De Laurentiis couldnt get his hands on the rights to the property, so the gang had to wing it and have Arnold play Kalidor, the supporting muscle to Brigitte Nielsens lead. Thatd be fine if the film wasnt such a slog. If you want to suck all the life out of a campy fantasy picture, keep all the camp intact but take the story way too seriously, as if youre making a respectable movie rather than a movie where Nielsen fights an evil queen in one-piece swimsuit armor. Schwarzenegger called it the worst movie he ever made, and claimed he used it as a disciplinary measure for when his kids acted out. You think hes kidding? 28. The Kid &amp; I, 2005, Himself Maybe ranking a movie made with such pure intentions this low is a one-way ticket to hell. The Kid &amp; Is best recommendation is found in the stuff of its production. Tom Arnold produced this movie on behalf of his neighbors, Alec Gores and his son Eric, who has cerebral palsy and whose favorite film happens to be True Lies. In The Kid &amp; I, Arnolds washed-up actor character gets a gig making a True Lies rip-off. Art and life bleed over into each other a bit, which is theoretically interesting; also theoretically interesting is Penelope Spheeris (director of Waynes World, Suburbia, and all three chapters of The Decline of Western Civilization), who cant do anything with Arnolds writing or mine meaning out of the kindhearted but nepotistic motivation driving the shoot. Schwarzeneggers barely in the movie at all, appearing alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, both playing themselves for no reason other than fan service. 27. Sabotage, 2014, Agent John "Breacher" Wharton Theres a lot wrong with Sabotage that has nothing to do with Schwarzeneggerchiefly its direction, courtesy of Suicide Squad patsy David Ayer. But as Schwarzenegger films go, its shockingly inert given its absurd level of violence combined with its obvious and uncomfortable fondness for its absurd level of violence. Describing movie violence as fetishistic is its own kind of fetish, but the action of Sabotage slogs. Arterial spray isnt enough; every action sequence is grindingly unpleasant with no real payoff. It's a weird sort of flex from Ayer, perhaps meant to show everybody that he has chops behind the camera while unwittingly betraying his limits as a director. Sabotage isnt a good movie. Its not even a good Schwarzenegger movie, even though hes clearly trying to be good. If someone ever invents time travel, send an envoy to before 2010 to warn Arnie off of this project. Each movie is built on the worst, or at least the most exhausting, fan service, where each action cinema icon takes turns winking and nudging one another by way of references to the franchises theyre known for. Groan. Schwarzeneggers here entirely for the Expendables central novelty act of watching dudes like Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis, and Jet Li pal around, but it's never supported by substance. End of Days, 1999, Jericho Cane A good educational tool for Schwarzenegger scholars, and not much else, End of Days is the first time Arnold really took a crack at looking disheveled, beaten down, and totally helpless, going far off his normal turf as an indestructible man of action. Thats an experiment with merit, but End of Days has nothing else going for it, which basically means that the experiment is a colossal failure. How do you screw this up? Its the damn Terminator going one-on-one with Satan. That movie sells itself. But End of Days barely even managed that, coming in with a box-office take that just qualifies as profitable without actually being all that profitable in the long run. Part of the problem may be that nobody on the screen has a good grasp on what kind of film theyre in; Schwarzenegger way undersells himself while Gabriel Byrne, playing the Devil himself, goes off the rails. Aftermath, 2017, Roman Melnyk If your concept of Arnold Schwarzenegger as an actor draws solely from his action iconographyhis movies ridiculous body counts, his one-liners, his physiquethen you probably watched Aftermath and thought, Huh! Who knew that Schwarzenegger could really act? The thing is, Schwarzenegger spent decades proving his acting chops in far better movies than Aftermath, a project that frankly doesnt benefit from his casting in any meaningful way. The revenge element, in which bereaved husband and father Roman seeks apology from the air traffic controller responsible for the mid-air collision that took his family's lives, sounds like an arc fit for a Terminator, but the film is one of those based on real events joints. Schwarzenegger is ill at ease in a film that comprises reality. Watching him struggle through his character is, in a heartbreaking way, fascinating, but he doesnt quite belong. 23. Collateral Damage, 2002, Cpt. Gordon "Gordy" Brewer Nothing wrong with a good ol goofy Arnold actioner, except for, well, this good ol goofy Arnold actioner. This is the rare movie where Arnold himself holds back; maybe its just outsiders perception, but from start to finish, his heads not in Collateral Damage. This could be a case of real life smothering the filmmaking: Collateral Damage landed in theaters not long before Schwarzenegger sought office in California for the first time, and not long after 9/11 made us all nervous to fly or travel near densely populated city centers. (In point of fact, 9/11 led to a delay on the films release.) Either the movie or Arnold had other things on their mind than kick-ass American macho antics, because Collateral Damage, considering its star pedigree, is about as standard as action cinema gets. Killing Gunther, 2017, Robert "Gunther" Bendik Imagine, if you like, Rmy Belvaux, Andr Bonzel, and Benot Poelvoordes Man Bites Dog, not a very good movie to begin with, but filtered through Saturday Night Live, and you more or less have Taran Killams Killing Gunther. The ideas fine enough: A crew of hit persons, including Killam as well as Bobby Moynihan and Hannah Simone, team up to bring down the top dog of all contract killers, Gunther, only for Gunther to foil them at every turn. He really is that good. Problem is, the movies not, and Gunther is hardly even in it, which means Schwarzenegger is hardly in it, which means that you need more reason to hang with the movie beyond his appearance in its last half-hour. Is a little Arnold still good Arnold? It can be. 21. Jingle All the Way, 1996, Howard Langston Truth time, gang: Theres no such thing as a guilty pleasure, for if it pleases you to watch a film, theres nothing to feel guilty about. But lets entertain the guilty pleasure as an aesthetic. If we do, Jingle All the Way qualifies, and its not even a question: This movie sucks, but in its particular suckitude its bafflingly watchable. Maybe its the joy of watching Arnold get outsmarted by Sinbad at every possible turn. Maybe its the deranged delight of Arnold getting blotto with a reindeer. Maybe its the bonkers-in-a-family-movie-sort-of-way Santa Claus fight scene, kind of a pre-Matrix Reloaded Burly Brawl but with an army of Saint Nicks and the Terminator. Its a cheesy movie. Its a half-baked movie. Its a movie made with craft that barely measures up to adequate. Batman &amp; Robin, 1997, Dr. Victor Fries/Mr. Freeze If your dad was a supervillain, he'd be Mr. Freeze, which means your dad would be Arnold Schwarzenegger, which he almost certainly is not, though its pretty fun to imagine what that would be like. (Would he be the cool parent, or would he be the one who makes you do your homework, brush your teeth, and eat your vegetables at a time in your life when you cannot appreciate how damn good vegetables are?) That thought exercise aside, theres no denying that Mr. Freeze is the king of dad jokes in comic-book movie history. Back in 1997, when Joel Schumacher dropped Batman &amp; Robin on the world like a neutron bomb of awfulness, Schwarzeneggers performance gave critics a convenient scapegoat for their (justifiable) contempt for the movie. Allowing for harsh words on how bad Batman &amp; Robin actually is (in a word: atrocious), its problems have less to do with Schwarzenegger specifically and more with the production holistically. 19. Junior, 1994, Dr. Alexander "Alex" Hesse For many, Junior boils down to four words: My body, my choice. That line defines the movie. Its the anchor keeping Junior affixed in popular culture, not necessarily meant to flatter the filmit is, after all, a comedy where Schwarzenegger plays a scientist, and if thats not unbelievable enough, he plays a scientist who gets knocked upbut more to skewer it and memorialize its absurd one-joke premise. But hey: Twins had a one-joke premise, too, and Twins is pretty all right. Juniors nowhere near as good (and Twins is only good in the way many hacky goofball '80s comedies are good), but its a wonderful showcase for Arnolds sense of timing. Being as timing is everything in comedy, Junior, in the rearview, feels like more proof (if more proof is needed) of Schwarzeneggers star quality. He can knock a dude out with his fist, and he can knock an audience out with laughter. Escape Plan, 2013, Emil Rottmayer / Victor X Mannheim Theres a neat little moment in Mikael Hfstrms Escape Plan where Emil Rottmayer, an Austrian banker trapped in a remote private prison, fakes a psychotic break to distract guards long enough for his fellow inmate to get into some prison-breaking shenanigans. Emil screams. He cries. He starts babbling in Austrian. Its a special beat in Schwarzeneggers history: Were always keenly aware of his background, but its not often that his background is brought into a films foreground. In Escape Plan, that dynamic helps this particular scene sing, and the weight of Schwarzeneggers micro-performance carries over elsewhere into an otherwise basic movie about two guys, uh, hatching a plan to escape. 17. The 6th Day, 2000, Adam Gibson / Adam Gibson Clone Whats better than one Arnold? Two Arnolds! One Arnold is trouble for bad guys. Two Arnolds, well, theres just no escaping your comeuppance. As is the case with any movie that tries to sell Arnold as a regular guy to its audience, The 6th Day suffers from Arnolds not-at-all-regular stature as a movie star and especially as a model of peak male physicality. He plays a helicopter pilot. Lets reiterate: In a sci-fi movie set in the near-future where cloning is a thingan ethically fraught thing, but a thing nonethelessthe only career screenwriters Cormac and Marianne Wibberley could think to give Arnolds character is helicopter pilot. Cmon. But Arnold pulls off the normalcy well enough, handily selling Adam Gibsons shock at coming home to find hes been replaced by his doppelganger and thus entangled in the battle over clonings morality. 16. Kindergarten Cop, 1990, Det. John Kimble Watching your favorite action hero get his ass handed to him by a bunch of kids who dont even measure up to his waistline might not be your idea of a good time, but quite frankly, that scenario may well be Arnold at his most pure. Arnolds fans care about his macho image. No one can speak for Arnold but Arnold, but its a pretty good bet that he doesnt give half a damn about that image at all, at least not so much that he wont play around with it or trade on it for the sake of a good physical gag. The key to Kindergarten Cop is that it needs Schwarzenegger, but Schwarzenegger, a big huge Hollywood deal after the time he had in the '80s, didnt really need Kindergarten Cop. But he took the role anyway, and judging by his performance, he loved it. How can you not get behind that level of dedication and obvious personal enjoyment? One moment hes screaming at a bunch of tykes. The next hes introducing them to his pet ferret. But that aside, Red Heat is terrific, exactly what youd expect from a technician like Walter Hill, he of 48 Hrs., a guy with a no-nonsense aesthetic and an absolutely stellar sense for incongruous comic pairings. Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy, then Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Belushi. Theyre perfect foils for each other: Belushi the wise-ass American detective, Schwarzenegger the iron-jawed straight man. 14. Eraser, 1996, U.S. Marshal John Kruger Erasers great claim to fame is that its a solid Schwarzenegger film. No more, no less. Part of its importance in his filmography, and part of what makes it so good, is when it lands: after Last Action Hero, when Schwarzeneggers star power just couldnt help him open a movie worth a damn leading. Its the last worthwhile Arnie film up to The Last Stand (the corny delights of Batman &amp; Robin aside). And it really is worthwhile, nothing special next to the great entries on his rsum, but a handsome example of what makes Arnie movies Arnie movies all the same. No more Mr. Nice Arnold: The actions a gas, and he even gets a few choice one-liners here. (Youre luggage!) Twins, 1988, Julius Benedict Its amazing how, even after 1976, Schwarzenegger could skate by on his farm-boy charms and earnestness, and make a crummy movie decent and a decent movie surprisingly watchable just by being himself. Twins falls between these designations; its the kind of schlocky 1980s comedy that winks and yucks and hams it up before taking a sharp turn for the sentimental toward the end, except the movie stars Schwarzenegger as a fluffy riff on his action-star persona. Julius Benedict is a very good boy, basically a golden retriever in human form. All he wants is for his brother, Vincent (Danny DeVito), to love him. He wants to find their mother and ask why she abandoned him, because (surprise) he just wants her to love him, too. 12. Raw Deal, 1986, Sheriff Mark Kaminsky / Joseph P. Brenner Theres an alternate universe out there where behind the lens, Raw Deal wound up getting, well, a raw deal. In that universe, the movies a potboiler from top to bottom, made by only borderline-competent technical types to keep down on expenses. But we dont live in that universe. We live in the universe where Raw Deal was shot by Alex Thomson, whose rsum features names like Nicolas Roeg, Michael Cimino, Michael Mann, David Fincher, and John Boorman; edited by the legendary Anne V. Coates, known best for Lawrence of Arabia; and written by Norman Wexler, responsible for the screenplays of Saturday Night Fever and Serpico. 11. Last Action Hero, 1993, Det. Jack Slater / Himself If Total Recall wasnt a thing, Last Action Hero might hold higher esteem in the Schwarzenegger canon; theyre more or less of a piece, as self-aware action movies made by great craftsman intent on dissecting and also skewering the very conventions theyre openly indulging. But theres a big difference between the two: Total Recall is a stone-cold masterpiece, and Last Action Hero is just good, or, in the spirit of generosity, probably better than you remember it being. Like Total Recall, its self-reflective. Like Total Recall, it uses genre cliche for fun and profit and even plot. Unlike Total Recall, its made by John McTiernan, who knows how to make an amazing action movie (see: Die Hard, and other entries on this list, yknow), but doesnt quite have a handle on the kind of thing Last Action Hero is trying to accomplish. (It doesnt help that watching the movie lends this unshakeable sense that other folks kept trying to get their hands on the wheel while McTiernan was trying to steer.) 10. The Running Man, 1987, Benjamin "Ben" Richards Three decades ago, critics took The Running Man out to the woodshed. Now they all look like assholes. Its not uncommon to see yesteryears movies reevaluated over time and given new life and appreciation by later generations (or by the previous generations more thoughtful arbiters), but reviewers got The Running Man very wrong the first time around. Lets get fancy and call it prescient: Paul Michael Glasers adaptation of Stephen Kings 1982 novel not only predicts the advent of TVs poisonous influence on pop culture, it specifically informs movies, ranging from Battle Royale to The Hunger Games, made long after its initial release in 1987. King set the novel in 2025. Glasers screenwriter, Steven E. de Souza, pushed the date back to 2017, the year of a global economic collapse that led to the U.S.s transformation into a police state. As serious as The Running Mans premise is, The Running Man itself is willfully silly, loaded with one-liners and action that verges on the absurd. His work is littered with contributions to action-movie iconography. But if you tend to think of Schwarzenegger as a big, musclebound beefcake with little to offer humanity beyond the circumference of his biceps, then your go-to Arnie movie is probably Conan the Barbarian, or its considerably lesser sequel, Conan the Destroyer. (The latters saving grace is its immense GIF-ability, but thats really not much of a plus.) The Last Stand, 2013, Sheriff Ray Owens Should you find yourself in the mood for an Arnold Schwarzenegger that functions as a series of nods to Arnold Schwarzeneggers career and also doesnt insult your taste and intellect, try giving Kim Jee-woons excellent The Last Stand a watch. Kim doesnt try to reinvent the Arnie wheel, but hes also a disciplined filmmaker, not one to get lazy and lean on referential drudgery to score a few cheap pops from his audience. Arnie fans will be happy just to see him in a movie, to say nothing of a movie directed with brisk, loony energy by one of South Koreas best genre filmmakers. Helming The Last Stand, a tale of big crime in a small town watched over by Schwarzeneggers guilty and world-weary sheriff, Kim contents himself letting Arnold be Arnold with no other pretense. Rather than reference Arnolds movies, he references some of his own and generally has a great time doing it. The best part? 7. True Lies, 1994, Agent Harry Tasker / Harry Renquist Depending on your vantage point, True Lies has either aged poorly or remarkably well for a movie of its era. In 2018, productions as blatantly racist and homophobic as this are rightly unfashionable, and for that matter, can you even imagine a movie about a government spy blackmailing his own wife into becoming a prostitute getting a greenlight today? (Scratch that last one. The answers still likely yes.) But even problematic faves still have merit as entertainment, and entertainments where True Lies thrives. If you can stomach the bad optics, and if you can buy the central premisethat a guy like Schwarzenegger could work as a spy and hide his vocation from his family without ever raising even a whiff of suspicionthen youre in for a nice, larky ride, a product of its time that knows how to party. 6. Maggie, 2015, Wade Vogel Wade Vogels weepy zombie flick Maggie doesnt ask much of Schwarzenegger, but he delivers more, which is good since Vogel doesnt have a whole lot to give himself. Maggie, in case its not already clear, isnt a great movie, just a decent one, too listless to uphold the promise of its basic conceit. Wade (Schwarzenegger) finds his daughter, Maggie (Abigail Breslin), zombie-bitten in post-zombie pandemic America; he brings her home, though she left in the first place to protect him and the rest of her family, to take care of her, knowing full well the danger he courts by just being near her. Its a heartbreaking idea, lessened by the absence of momentum. All things considered, Maggie goes nowhere. Its stakes never amount to anything. But its beautiful, in a grim, washed-out sort of way, and Schwarzenegger is legitimately devastating as a man torn in two by the inevitable demise of his daughter. Burying your child is one kind of horror. Knowing when youre going to have to bury her is worse. For another group, Commando comes down to a 40-second gear-up montage, where John Matrix rows ashore an empty beach in naught but his Speedos and then, in several blinks of the human eye, clothes himself, carefully knots his boots, arms himself to the teeth, and paints himself with camo stripes. You think Johns an efficient soldier? Hes even more efficient at getting dressed. You ever hit up a party with this guy, you can rest easy knowing that you wont be late because hes taking too long to pick out and put on an outfit. Thats military discipline exemplified. Predator, 1987, Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer Gather together a crowd of action die-hards, and each of them will have their own favorite '80s action star, whether Stallone, Willis, Chow Yun-fat, Jackie Chan, Jean Claude Van Damme, or Schwarzenegger. But from any objective sense, Schwarzenegger has an edge over all of them thanks to Predator, where he goes toe-to-toe with Kevin Peter Hall as one of sci-fis greatest monsters; none of Arnies contemporaries can claim that kind of awesome accomplishment. But Die Hard is the greatest action movie of all time! you say. And you know what? Youre right. But Predator, John McTiernans pre-Die Hard warm-up, is every bit as dizzying a spectacle and proof of both his skill as an action maestro and Schwarzeneggers presence. The Terminator, 1984, T-800 "Model 101"; Terminator 2: Judgment Day, 1991, T-800 "Model 101"; Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, 2003, T-850 "Model 101"; Terminator Genisys, 2015, T-800 "Model 101" Given a little thought, Terminator is the perfect metaphor for Schwarzenegger: Like the T-800, hes an implacable brawny machine who absolutely will not stop until he fulfills his mission. The key difference is that Schwarzenegger just wants to wow your socks clean off your ankles. He doesnt want to kill you, though if you hang out with him long enough, chances are youll accidentally get blown up or crushed by a tank. Thats the risk you take hanging out with the Governator. Yuks aside, the Terminator films, for better and for worse, are likely the most defining films of Schwarzeneggers body of work; the image of the shades-wearing, leather-clad cyborg, striding without end toward his target. Theres a transgressive cool factor to the Terminator figure: He looks like a rebel badass. True, hes a tool of oppression in the first movie, but his turn through the rest of the series lets him earn the distinction his outfit affords him. 2. Stay Hungry, 1976, Joe Santo Here it is: The best evidence available that Arnold can, in fact, act. Much like its protagonist, a mopey well-heeled Southern boy and inveterate loafer, Stay Hungry isnt ambitious. Rather, its unapologetically carefree, the film equivalent of bobbing down a river on a summers day, lazing on an inner tube without a worry in your heart or any plan in mind other than pursuit of nirvana by way of inertia. The Southern boy is played by Jeff Bridges, youthful but still possessed of that trademark Bridges roguishness; hes supported first by Sally Fields, free-spirited and completely allergic to nonsense, and second by Arnold, playing an equally free-spirited bodybuilder with the life goal of winning the Mr. Universe title. Schwarzenegger embodies chummy convivial warmth; hes everyones friend. 1. Total Recall, 1990, Douglas "Doug" Quaid / Carl Hauser The film The Last Action Hero wishes it could be. Also: not the film anyone thinks it is, or thought it was. By now Total Recalls quality of satire is well-known; its a clever, and well-masked, send-up of action cinema, a demonstration of how action films numb our senses and melt our brains. Maybe one could argue, assuming one is willing, that a guy like Schwarzenegger doesnt suit that conceit particularly well, given that hes the action star, a man whose influence over the genres evolution is as grand as it is undeniable. But thats exactly what makes him so perfect for Total Recalls merciless parody. The movie needs Schwarzenegger to be himself, and to give a full demonstration of the archetype he helped shape. It has Schwarzenegger at his wide-eyed best, a man unmoored from reality as he knows it and desperate to find his footing.
