The latest <a href="https://www.henleyglobal.com/passport-index/ranking">Henley Passport Index</a> has revealed the countries with the most powerful passports in the world.&nbsp;

The Henley Passport Index is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) – the largest, most accurate travel information database – and enhanced by Henley &amp; Partners’ research team.&nbsp;

The index includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations. Updated monthly, the Henley Passport Index is the most robust and reliable index of its kind.

According to the latest update, citizens from countries with powerful passports, like Singapore, France and Germany, can visit several countries without the need for a visa.&nbsp;

In Africa, Seychelles holds the most powerful passport, offering visa-free access to 151 countries and ranking 24th globally.

Mauritius follows closely with visa-free access to 150 countries, ranking 28th worldwide, while South Africa's passport provides access to 106 countries, placing it 47th globally.

For example, in the Belgian Congo, copper from Katanga was taken to the port of Lobito in Angola on the Benguela railway. In Liberia, a railway was built from the iron-producing region of Nimba country to the port in Buchanan.

After gaining independence in the mid-20th century, many African countries took control of their railway systems and invested in improving transport connections within and across borders.

Despite these efforts, African railways faced significant challenges, including underinvestment, mismanagement, and maintenance issues. The rise of road transportation and neglect of rail infrastructure led to a decline in the importance of railways in many areas.

Roads are the primary mode of transport on the continent, and it carries <a href="https://www.afdb.org/en/documents/cross-border-road-corridors-expanding-market-access-africa-and-nurturing-continental-integration">80 per cent</a> of goods and 90 per cent of passenger traffic. However, Africa faces a huge road infrastructure deficit, leading to increased transaction costs and a low level of intra-Africa trade, which sits at just 18% of total goods traded on the continent.

Now, many countries are putting money where the asphalt is. The primary motivation behind these investments is the understanding that well-developed roads translate to economic growth, job creation, and well-connected communities.

Countries vary in their road quality and network length, reflecting diverse levels of infrastructure development.

According to a report by <a href="https://www.globalfirepower.com/roadway-coverage.php">Global Firepower</a>, South Africa has the most extensive road network in Africa, covering 750,000 km, and ranks 11th globally. Nigeria follows with 195,000 km, placing it 29th, while Kenya has 161,452 km, ranking 32nd.

According to <a href="https://www.mercer.com/insights/total-rewards/talent-mobility-insights/cost-of-living/">Mercer’s annual Cost of Living City Ranking</a> report, inflation and exchange-rate fluctuations have directly impacted the pay and savings of globally mobile employees. Additionally, increased economic and geopolitical volatility, along with local conflicts and emergencies, have driven up costs in housing, utilities, local taxes, and education.

This year’s ranking methodology encompassed 226 cities across five continents. It assessed the comparative costs of over 200 items in each location — from housing and transportation to food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.

Safair claimed the second spot on the list with an impressive on-time arrival rate of 92.36%, while Kenya Airways secured the tenth position with a commendable 71.86% on-time arrival rate.

Cirium defines "on-time" as arriving within 14 minutes and 59 seconds of the airline's scheduled arrival time. The carriers also have to meet specific capacity and network requirements to be considered a "global" airline.

In the MEA rankings was Oman Air (WY), claiming the top spot with an outstanding on-time arrival rate of 92.53%. Commendably, Oman and Safair were the only airlines in the report to secure an on-time arrival rate of more than 90%.

Cirium's other 2023 winners in the MEA region include Royal Jordanian with an on-time arrival rate of 87.51%, Qatar Airways at 85.11%, Etihad Airways achieving 82.90%, Saudia with 89.21%, Middle East Airlines at 79.15%, Emirates at 78.48%, and Kuwait Airways with a rate of 73.18%.

Cirium not only based its winner on punctuality but also the "complexity of its operations and capacity to provide more benefit to passengers and airports," Cirium CEO Jeremy Bowen stated.

Avianca Airlines of Colombia earned the title of the world's most punctual global airline, boasting an on-time arrival rate of&nbsp;<a href="https://africa.businessinsider.com/transportation/the-5-best-airlines-in-the-world-for-on-time-performance/3dh2qy4">85.73%</a>. The data used for the evaluation is sourced from over 600 different sources.

“The NDC caucus in Parliament holds the view that at a time that the country is in dire need of foreign exchange and non-tax revenue, it is unconscionable that the government will hand over the precious and highly sought-after 5G spectrum of the country to a shell company for a pittance,” the caucus said.

Under the terms of the deal, Radisys Corp., a unit of Ambani-controlled Reliance Industries Ltd., will provide network infrastructure, applications and smartphones for Ghana-based NGIC. The deal gives NGIC and its strategic partners exclusive control over Ghana’s only 5G license for a decade.

Other partners in NGIC include Nokia Oyj, Indian outsourcer Tech Mahindra Ltd. and Microsoft Corp. Two lesser-known African telecom firms — Ascend Digital Solutions Ltd. and K-NET — hold a combined stake of 55% in the new company. The Ghanaian government owns roughly 10%.

Ghana’s government has set an ambitious target to digitally connect the entire country over the next six years. With a population of just over 33 million, Ghana has three main operators: MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana and AT, which changed its name from AirtelTigo last year.

Mozambique's first president, Samora Machel, passed away on October 19, 1986, following a tragic incident where his plane, a Soviet Tupolev 134, crashed into a hillside at Mbuzini, situated just inside South Africa's borders.

The Margo Commission, established by the South African&nbsp;government,&nbsp;but which included high-level international representation, probed the incident. It determined that the crash resulted from pilot error.

Despite the acceptance of its findings by the&nbsp;International Civil Aviation Organization, the report&nbsp;was rejected&nbsp;by the Mozambican and Soviet governments.

The latter submitted a minority report suggesting that the aircraft was intentionally lured off course by a decoy&nbsp;radio navigation&nbsp;beacon set up&nbsp;specifically&nbsp;for this purpose by the South Africans. Speculation about the accident has&nbsp;therefore&nbsp;continued&nbsp;to the present day, particularly in Mozambique.

On April 6, 1994, the President of Rwanda, Juvénal Habyarimana, died in a plane crash near the capital city of Kigali. The incident, which also claimed the life of Burundian President Cyprien Ntaryamira and several others, occurred when the aircraft, a Dassault Falcon 50, was struck by surface-to-air missiles as it prepared to land at Kigali International Airport.

The tragic event catalyzed the Rwandan Genocide, a mass slaughter of Tutsi and moderate Hutu individuals by extremist Hutu militias. Habyarimana's death remains a subject of controversy, with various parties accused of orchestrating the plane crash as a means to spark the genocide.

Cyprien Ntaryamira, the President of Burundi, tragically lost his life in a plane crash on April 6, 1994, along with Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana.

This year's report introduces age-specific rankings, uncovering concerning trends in life satisfaction among young people in certain regions.

According to the report, Global happiness inequality has risen by over 20% in the past twelve years across all regions and age demographics, with significant variations observed based on age and geographical location.

In many but not all regions, the young are happier than the old. In Sub-Saharan Africa, there has been a notable increase in happiness inequality, particularly among the elderly.

In 2021-2023 negative emotions were in every region more prevalent for females than males, with almost everywhere the gender gap being larger at higher ages.

The report identifies the top 10 happiest countries on the continent, with Libya leading the list with a happiness score of 5.866. Following closely is Mauritius, with a score of 5.816, and South Africa securing the third position with a score of 5.422.

The report draws on global survey data from people in more than 140 countries.&nbsp;Countries are ranked on happiness based on their average life evaluations over the three preceding years (2021 to 2023).&nbsp;

The report is a partnership of Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network and an editorial board.

The Global Mind Project’s fourth annual ‘<a href="https://sapienlabs.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/4th-Annual-Mental-State-of-the-World-Report.pdf">Mental State of the World</a>’ report (conducted by&nbsp;<a href="https://sapienlabs.org/whats_new/sapien-labs-releases-the-4th-annual-mental-state-of-the-world-report/">Sapien Labs</a>) suggests a global decrease in mental well-being since the onset of the pandemic.

The report compiles responses from over 500,000 individuals gathered throughout the year across 71 countries, covering 9 geographic regions including Africa.

The report employs six-dimensional scores, including mood &amp; outlook, social self, drive &amp; motivation, adaptability &amp; resilience, cognition, and mind-body connection. These scores are also computed using subsets of the 47 assessed items to provide a more granular view.

According to the report, as mental wellbeing has remained largely static across the world since 2021, so too have the rankings of countries. At the top of the rankings are many Latin American and African countries while much of the core Anglosphere ranks in the bottom quartile.

This runs counter to the common perception that wealth enhances wellbeing.

"In our annual report for 2021 we showed that the average mental wellbeing scores of the Internet-enabled populations of countries were strongly and significantly negatively correlated with economic metrics such as per capita GDP and even the Human Development Index,"&nbsp;the report read.

Per the report, the UK recorded a relatively low score of 49 on the Mental Health Quotient (MHQ), whereas over 10 African countries achieved scores surpassing 60 on the MHQ.

According to Sapien Labs, this is because internet-enabled populations in wealthy countries are also likely to have youth on smartphones, ultra-processed food and weak social ties; three factors that have been linked to poor mental health.

In an earlier report,&nbsp;<a href="https://africa.businessinsider.com/local/markets/10-african-countries-with-the-highest-unemployment-rate-in-2024/lp9rhn7">Business Insider Africa</a>&nbsp;stated that despite the implementation of several initiatives by African governments to combat the issue, their impact has been limited amidst a ballooning population. The severity of the problem even led African leaders to adopt a seven-point declaration in Dar es Salaam last year to&nbsp;<a href="https://africa.businessinsider.com/local/markets/african-leaders-unite-to-tackle-unemployment/k456hnq">tackle unemployment</a>.

Both big and small countries on the conitnet is being hit by the unemployment problem. For example,&nbsp;<a href="https://africa.businessinsider.com/local/lifestyle/south-africa-prepares-to-launch-digital-nomad-visa-for-international-remote-workers/tjejgqm">South Africa</a>&nbsp;recorded an unemployment rate of 32.1%, making it the country with the highest unemployment rate on the continent. Djibouti and Eswatini follow closely, with unemployment rates reaching about 28 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively.

While unemployment largely remains a challenge, some countries have made considerable steps in curbing it, according to Statista.

For some countries the encouraging shift can be attributed to various factors, including economic reforms, increased investments in key sectors, and the emergence of new opportunities.

Having low unemployment rates in certain African countries brings about several positive impacts that ripple across their economies. When more people have jobs, they spend more, feel improved consumer confidence, and create a higher demand for goods and services. This, in turn, helps the economy grow.

According to Statista, Niger leads with the lowest unemployment rate at 0.49%, closely followed by Chad and Benin at 0.98% and 1.28%, respectively.

Several factors contribute to this issue, including climate change, poverty, and inadequate infrastructure. Additionally, challenges such as&nbsp;<a href="https://africa.businessinsider.com/local/markets/top-10-african-countries-with-the-weakest-currency-exchange-rates-in-2023/mk9j9tn">currency fluctuations</a>&nbsp;and geopolitical tensions, exemplified by events like the Russian-Ukraine war, have affected the global supply chain of agricultural produce and inputs.

With the continent's population booming, the delicate dance of supply and demand is under even more pressure. More people translate to more mouths to feed, adding stress to an already stretched-out system.

According to the World Bank's<a href="https://thedocs.worldbank.org/en/doc/40ebbf38f5a6b68bfc11e5273e1405d4-0090012022/related/Food-Security-Update-C-February-15-24.pdf">&nbsp;Food Security Update report by the World Bank</a>&nbsp;for February, domestic food price inflation remains high in low, middle, and high-income countries on the continent.

The report reveals that it will continue to rise in the coming months, driven by the intensifying disruption of market functionality and trade flows, anticipation of below-average harvests, and high fuel and transportation costs.

<a href="https://africa.businessinsider.com/local/markets/african-countries-hit-hardest-by-food-inflation-in-2023/1gdtpm7">Food inflation</a> for each country is based on the latest month from October 2023 to January 2024 for which the food component of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and overall CPI data are available. Real food inflation is defined as food inflation minus overall inflation.
