South Africa became the first African nation to host the quadrennial showpiece after winning the rights for the 2010 tournament.
The Black Stars were also on the verge of becoming the first African team to reach the last four of the World Cup before losing on penalties to Uruguay.
The defeat was made more painful by the fact that Ghana had a penalty in the final seconds of extra time after Suarez used his hand to keep out Dominic Adiyiah’s goal-bound header when the score was leveled at 1-1.
Although Suarez was sent off for his unsporting act and Ghana awarded a penalty, Asamoah Gyan failed to convert from the spot.
Uruguay eventually won the game 4-2 on penalties to progress to the semi-final of the World Cup at the expense of Ghana.
Speaking at a press conference as part of a two-day visit to Ghana, the CAF President said some South African fans wanted Suarez detained for denying the Black Stars a place in the semi-final.
“They [the fans] were saying that when the World Cup ended in 2010 in South Africa, they said they were going to ask the defense minister not to allow Suarez to leave the country because that was a clear goal,” Dr. Motsepe said.
He was quick to add that if Video Assistant Referees (VAR) were available, the incident would’ve been recorded as a goal.
“If there was VAR they would have said that was not a penalty but a goal. We believed that God had planned something for both Ghana and Africa.
“Ghana had the most unique talented team at that time and we were very ambitious that Ghana was going to go all the way,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dr. Motsepe also believes Ghana has the talent to win both the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup.
