The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has asked chiefs declaring their support for some presidential candidates to abdicate their seats before they do so.
The Asantehene was addressing the last session of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs.
He warned that no chief under him will be allowed to meddle in politics while the rule.

His comments come at a time where media reports suggest that some 58 chiefs in the Ashanti Region have declared their support for the 2016 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The chiefs subsequently denied the report. The Asantehene’s Mpaboahene [Sandals chief], Nana Yaw Owusu who spoke on behalf of the chiefs during Nana Addo’s visit said what they said was misconstrued.

Nana Yaw Owusu explained that they (chiefs of Atwima) only welcomed Nana Addo when he paid a courtesy call on them as part of his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region.
He continued that Nana Addo asked for their support in the upcoming elections, to which he responded that people of Atwima have always voted for the UP tradition which may happen again in December.
